  • 4 The Horseshoe Pitchers News Digest/August, 1978 STEINFELDT DONATES DOGWOOD TROPHY

(SEE COVER PICTURE) The five foot high Carolina Dogwood Festival Horseshoe trophy, won by Carl Steinfeldt of

Rochester, N.Y., and Clearwater, Fla., will remain in Statesville due to the generosity of Steinfeldt, the men's Class A champion, Jack Springer, recreation director, announced today.

Steinfeldt's idea was to leave the huge trophy here in Statesville, to be put on display by the Recreation Department in local banks or large business places, for different periods of time, to build up interest for the 1979 World's Horseshoe Tournament to be held here from July 27-August 5, 1979.

All past and future winners' names of the Dogwood Horseshoe Tournament will be engraved on the trophy plus a special plate in honor of Steinfeldt who donated the trophy.

In future Dogwood Horseshoe Tournaments, sponsored by the Statesville Recreation Department and the festival's executive committee, instead of purchasing another five-foot tall first place men's Class A trophy, the money for the trophy will be added for the first place winners cash award, which has been $100.

Steinfeldt felt that the larger first place cash award would draw in more top Class A horseshoe pitchers from throughout the United States and Canada for the already very popular Dogwood event.

He will be some time recuperating. He still has another date in the hospital. Why not drop him a get well card. His address is Herbert Pinch, 592 Hull Street, Sharon, Pennsylvania 16146.

JOHN ANGUS TOPS HERITAGE SINGLES LEAGUE (MASS.)

John Angus finished the Heritage Singles League in first place with a winning average of .617, winning 36 games, losing 22, and tying one. In a photo finish Larry Lamothe nosed out Harry Brown and Reggie Ploof for second spot. Most improved honors went to Reggie Ploof, who doubled his ringer percentage over last year. Ed Domey was high ringer man, averaging 72.7 percent. Bob Domey, who did not quite have enough games in to qualify for league awards, put together fifteen consecutive double ringers for top spot in that category. John Cobb was credited with high game with handicap, 187.

The league, which pitched on the ten indoor court layout of Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton, Mass., had thirty pitchers, but because of a league rule that 50 percent of the season must be pitched to qualify for awards, the final standings reflected only 17. All games were fifty shoe, countall, with 100 percent handicap. Handicaps were based on players' averages for the previous three weeks of pitching, to better reflect each player's current ability. Needless to say, many games were decided in the final inning. Our most indecisive player was John Cobb, who tied eight games, twice as many as any other pitcher.

Final standings — Numbers indicate Wins, Losses, Ties, Winning Average. 1. John Angus, 36-22-1-.617. 2. Larry Lamothe, 50-38-2-.565. 3. Harry Brown, 39-31-1-.556. 4. Reggie Ploof, 51-42-2-.546. 5. Paul Bricault, 49-41-1-.543. 6. Dick O'Brien, 48-41-3-.537. 7. Moe Farmer, 30-26-0-.536. 8. John Cobb, 47-42-8-.524. 9. Bones Hastings, 40-36-3-.524. 10. Dick Shepard, 49-45-1-.521. 11. Buddy Ploof, 38-37-3-.506. 12. Ed Domey, 41-45-1-.477. 13. Russ Gadoury, 45-52-2-.465. 14. Charlie Bonani, 35-45-4-.443. 15. Mel Merritt, 42-61-0-.408. 16. George Lamothe, 29-48-3-.386. 17. Bart Sargent, 34-63-2-.356. High game with handicap: John Cobb — 187. Most Improved: Reggie Ploof. High ringer percentage: Ed Domey, 72.7. Ed Domey, 72.7. Bob Domey, 77.3%, for 43 games.

STATE HALL OF FAME HONOR AWARDED TO PEARL PEPPLE CLIMAXING A LIFETIME OF SERVICE

Back in September of 1977 at the Kansas State tournament, a most pleasant episode in the life of Perl 4'Pep: Pepple when he was presented a beautiful plaque nailing him to the Kansas State Horseshoe Pitcher's Hall of Fame, an honor bestowed on him as a promoter and organizer in horseshoe pitching circles for many years in the Kansas area.

In making the presentation, Bill Chester had this to say, "Pep, I am so very proud of you. I feel so good inside because you have been selected to the Kansas State Hall of Fame. You are something that many of us are hoping to be. May you always guide with great leadership and move with enthusiasm.''

Alvin Dahlene in his comments at the celebration had this to say, "Pep's shining light was not his ability to toss ringers, but his keen ability to publicize the game. I know of no one who has worked harder for the game than Pep. He dearly loves the game and looks forward to all the tournaments."

In his many years in horseshoes, Pep has organized meets for the local club and American Legion Post, contacted TV stations, radio and newspapers. He provided the scorekeepers, handled monies and acquired the trophies. He has worked with tireless spirit in keeping the courts in top shape and kept all facets of the game moving.

At the time of his induction he was celebrating his 85th birthday. We all extend to him our most sincere congratulations on his ascension to this high place in the ranks of horseshoe greats.

    DID YOU KNOW THAT —

By Sol Herman The Miller Brewing Co. provided the trophies for the 1962 World's Championship. They

also had a man present to help with the publicity. Gordon Horseshoe Co. donated 3 awards for the Junior Championship. Ohio Horseshoe Co. donated the sportsmanship award. Diamond Horseshoe Co. donated the gold plated horseshoes. The NHPA filmed the 1962 tournament. Bob Pence narrated the one hour film. Phil Zozzaro sold 100 tickets for the 1977 raffle. If all NHPA members did as well, we would

have raised $400,000. Sue and Danny Kueheinski appeared on the Tonite Show, Wed., June 28, 1978. RWE Inc. is preparing a second film on horseshoes, 1946 thru 1977.

1978 HERITAGE CLUB CHAMPIONS: STEINFELDT, GADOURY, HOWE, COURVILLE, MARTIN, DICKINSON, BENSON,

    DESROCHES, TAYLOR

Carl Steinfeldt wrapped up a successful nationwide winter tour by winning the club cham-pionship of Heritage Recreation Center in Sutton, Mass. Keeping up the recent Heritage tradition of record-setting performances, with the able assistance of Joe Schultz, those two worthies put out a string of nine consecutive four deads. Recognizing that the best practice

  • The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 HERITAGE CHAMPIONS — (Continued)

comes from looking at a lot of ringers, Debby Michaud competed with the men in Class 1 and pitched her highest tournament yet, 76.4%. Art Tyson was the only player other than Steinfeldt to take the measure of Debby. Paul Cormier pitched his first 70 percent tournament, at 71.2%.

Ed Courville knocked off Russ Gadoury in playoff action to win the Class 2 championship. He averaged 60 percent for the first time.

Bob Martin fired a spectacular 72.7% against Dick Shepard in the final Class 3 playoff to win that championship. Shepard took the measure of Murland Bradley in the first game.

Bill Dickinson stepped out with a clean sweep to take Class 4, one of only three players to do so in the nine class championships.

Observers state that Ray Benson is back to his own style of pitching and the results show it, as he won Class 5 with a playoff victory over Joe Szlosek.

Mike Desroches won a four way playoff for Class 6 honors. Dick Brown, Dennis Reardon, and Bud Ploof provided his playoff competition.

Dick Taylor parlayed seven wins against one loss into a Class 7 championship. Edith Gadoury was the only person to successfully defend a class championship when she

defeated Janice Domey in a playoff 35-23. Edith felt lousy (where have we heard that one before?) and only pitched because she was defending champ. The closest game in the Womens' class was a 35-34 win by Vivian Deuster over her daughter Lisa, scored by her husband Walter.

All class champions have life-sized photos mounted on the wall at Heritage so that the other 57 pitchers can eat their hearts out for a whole year.

  • The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 GADOURY, BROWN & STAUFER TOPS IN ST. MORITZ MEET

By Bart Sargent The St. Moritz Spring Tournament was held at Heritage Recreation Center, Sutton, Mass.

on June 4. Many thanks to Ed Domey for the use of his beautiful indoor court. Also many thanks to Barbara and Janice Domey for tallying up our scores and opening up their snack bar to our members. The St. Moritz Club is located in Quincy, about 60 miles away.

Of the thirteen entries, five of the players have never been to Heritage: George Brown, Dale Staufer, Earl Healy, Dick Barry, and Cliff Backman. They were all very impressed. It was also the first time these players have played in a tournament using the round-robin scoring system. At St. Moritz, our Monday and Tuesday night leagues use the count-all handicap system.

Cash prizes were awarded. Games were thirty five points. Class A and B played a double four-man round robin while class C a single five-man round robin.

The closest game in class A was Russ Gadoury's victory over Bill Davis. Bill had a lead of 32-25 and Russ came on strong at the end to win 38-33. There were three four-deads during that time. A game between Joe Grillo and Bill Davis was won by Bill after Joe had built up a lead of 21-7. Bill came on strong and didn't allow Joe another point, winning 38-21. Russ Gadoury's only loss was to Joe Grillo 36-21.

Class B was very close. Harry Brown won the class, but it wasn't easy. His first game with George Loring, he had a lead of 29-13. George came on strong to take the lead 32-29, but Harry got a double to win 35-32. George came back in their second game to beat Harry in another close game 35-33.

Class C honors went to Dale Staufer who is a new-comer to St. Moritz this year. His single flip is ringing the stake more often each week. He was the only player in the tournament without a loss. His last game was his only close one 35-34 against Earl Healy. Earl was leading 34-26, but Dale wouldn't allow him another point. Earl's best game was a shut-out with a 42.3 ringer percentage, more than twenty points higher than his league percentage. The longest game of the Tournament went 80 shoes between Cliff Backman and Bart Sargent. The game between Dick Barry and Bart was see-sawing all the way. Toward the end Bart led 32-24. Dick passed him 33-32, but Bart got an uncovered ringer which needed a straight-edge to measure for a 35-33 win. Dick won his next game against Earl Healy 37-31.

CLASS A — Russ Gadoury, 5-1-50.4; Bill Davis, 4-2-45.3; Joe Grillo, 2-4-38.6; Nick Vafides, 1-5-30.6.

  • 16 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 TOM BEST & SONS OPEN — LEWES, DELAWARE

The Southern Delaware Horseshoe Pitcher's Association received its charter on May 19, 1978 and held the first N.H.B.A. Tournament played in Delaware's history on June 25, 1978.

Our first tournament was a doubles match of 7 games and 52 shoes pitched in each game. For a starter, it was a success, thanks to the pitchers from the Denton, Md. and the Wicomico County Horseshoe Club of Salisbury, Md., for coming over to pitch and helping us to get off to a good start.

CLASS A — Bud Graves, Lewes, Del. and Jeff Layton, Denton, Md., 7-0; Willard Sammons, Seaford, Del. and Bill Taylor, Snow Hill, Md., 6-1; Kennard Holden, Ridgely, Md. and John Walls, Lewes, Del., 3-4; Parker Sturgiss, Fruitland, Md. and Sturgiss, Fruitland, Md. and Lester Carroll, Salisbury, Md., 2-5.

CLASS B — Jack Blades, Cardova, Md. and Galen Crummett, Seaford, Del., 5-2; Lewis Walls, Denton, Md. and Bill Graves, Lewes, Del., 4-3; Kenneth Mitchell, Lewes, Del. and Ralph Saul, Lewes, Del., 1-6; Jim Cagle, Lewes, Del. and George Layton, Denton, Md., 0-7.

CLASS A was settled in storybook fashion as both teams came into the seventh and final game, 6-0. Then in a head to head match, it was won by Bud Graves and Jeff Layton, 35-34 over Willard Sammons and Bill Taylor. Our club wants to thank John "Jack" Taylor, Tournament Director of the Wicomico County Horseshoe Club, who came up to watch and ended up working and keeping us straight on our first tournament. Thanks a whole lot, Jack.

  • The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 DAVIS SWEEPS PORTLAND, ORE. ROSE FESTIVAL OPEN

The annual Rose Festival Open was held with its usual excitement on two contrasting days. Saturday's pitching was interrupted several times by showers and was saved only by the court covers which kept the clay pits dry enough to pitch in. On the other hand, Sunday was a beautiful day with sunshine being enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Daisy Chapelle, Barbara Chapelle, Oneta Otnes and others for doing the clerical work and to Bill Hulshof for his hot coffee. The volunteer work of the score keepers was excellent which made for minimum effort for the local officers to run the tournament.

Lowell Davis won the tournament with a clean sweep defeating Bob West in the last game after being behind 21 to 40. Bob finished second with a 9-2 record and a 74% tournament. He is coming back well after last year's injury. Bob's other loss was to Barry Chappelle when he lost two perfect ringers when ahead 49 to 45. Barry finished 3rd. Lauren Hill started on a comeback trail with a 62.5% tournament to win class B in a playoff with Jim Alexander. Jim got left in the 49 hole by Pete Zumaran in the last game to force the playoff.

Willard Limbaugh, a newcomer, pitched steady horseshoes to capture Class C. Bill Dolan, Frank Ruebaugh and Jack Stryker had lifetime bests to win their clases. Tom J. Worthington won class E and Sigrid Jones beat Frances Phillips in a playoff for the Women's crown.

  • 26 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 4th ANNUAL COWBOY OPEN WON BY TULK AT RAWLINS, WYO.

Despite competition arising from activities customarily planned for the 4th celebration and in view of the Cheyenne Open held one week earlier the Cowboy Open held at Rawlins, Wyoming, enjoyed a good turnout of pitchers. Thirty six men and six women pitchers entered the tournament. Good friends and loyal supporters from Colo, and Nebr. made Wyo. pitchers aware of their presence by the stiff competition.

Jim Tulk (Colo.) has pitched in the four tournaments and won Class A three times. The ladies from Colo, are to be congratulated for keeping alive the interest in that segment of the sport. Although Evelyn Smith (Wyo.) took the title in Class A, Alice Abrams and Margaret Tarket (Colo.) provided the competition that makes the outcome of games uncertain to the end.

Cowboy Schliske (Wyo.) with a steady roping hand was able to tie-down Class B in a play-off with Stewart of Colo. Schulenburg (Wyo.) a first timer in tournament competition never lost a Class C game but Rickard (Wyo.) came within one point of spoiling that no loss record.

Wayne Smith (Wyo.) won Class D. He waited until the last game to spoil what would have been a no defeat record.

Manager Ken Raymond spent most of his time distrubuting gifts — home crafted beautiful jade jewelry, caps, bolo ties, belt buckles, etc. among the pitchers. The refreshments and gifts supplied by Raymond and Sundberg were fabulous.

  • The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/August, 1978 LACROSSE OVER GROSEBACH-WINS CHEYENNE, WYO. OPEN

More than fifteen years ago Cheyenne was acclaimed the horseshoe pitching capital of Wyoming. Tournaments drew sizeable numbers of pitchers from adjoining states and for many years Cheyenne was a popular place to participate in the sport. Things changed with time. Local interest subsided and too few of the devout but aging pitchers were left the burden of keeping courts and perform the tasks of conducting the tournaments. Fortunately, interest in the sport resumed pending a threat by the city to destroy the courts. The revitalization took place on June 24-25 when seventy-five pitchers, the greatest recorded turn-out at a tournament in this state. The tournament appeared to be popular and hopefully the local club can sponsor yearly tourneys.

Colorado pitchers dominated Class A with LaCrosse (Colo.) taking the title from Grosenbach (Colo.) in a play-off. Patton, a native of Wyo., but an emigrant to Colo., took Class B in a three-way play-off. Bakken (Nebr.) captured Class C and Stewart (Colo.) overcame Fraass of Nebr. in a play-off for the Class D title.

Classes E & F were saturated with Wyo. pitchers and Henderson of Wyo. dominated in Class E and Dinius (Wyo.) took Class F. State Champion Evelyn Smith snatched the ladies title and G. Woolington Wyo. State Junior Champ took the junior title.
