Welcome to Cairns!

Congratulations to all athletes who have been selected to compete at this second Trans Tasman Tournament, including the athletes from Tonga who are here to compete at their first international event. All of you should feel very proud of the journey that began with regular training in your own community and will now be celebrated here in Queensland.

This is the first Trans Tasman Tournament to be held in Australia and the first major Special Olympics event to be held in Cairns. It represents a commitment by the local community to create opportunities for people with an intellectual disability to enjoy the thrill of sport, fun and friendship. From this Tournament, the foundations will be set for a strong local program of regular training for people with an intellectual disability.

In the meantime, we look forward to some great competition in athletics, basketball, 7-a-side football (soccer) and tenpin bowling, and we expect much inspiration to come from the performance of our athletes. Win or lose they will give their personal best as they share in the joy of sport and sportsmanship.

If you are a family member, carer, official or supporter you should feel proud of the dedication and passion you have shown to allow these athletes to celebrate their talents and showcase their ability at this uplifting competition. This is also your time to shine.

Many thanks must also go to the Cairns community, including media and sponsors, Patrons and Ambassadors, and of course the Games Organising Committee for their dedication to this event.

The Trans Tasman Tournament will leave a legacy of support for people with an intellectual disability long after this great competition is over. So, let the Tournament begin!

Dear Athletes, Coaches and Administrators, Families and Supporters, Officials, Volunteers and Guests

Welcome to Cairns and welcome to the Trans Tasman Tournament!

Special Olympics Australia entrusted the organising - with lots of support, of course - of this event to a local volunteer committee, that has worked diligently in its planning and organisation of this Tournament.

As the Chair of the Games Organising Committee, I am grateful to have this opportunity of recognising the dedication and commitment of my fellow Committee members and all of the other volunteers who have been involved in making this event possible.

I also acknowledge and thank our local community patrons, ambassadors and sponsors - who are listed in this program. Without support from the local community, events like the Trans Tasman Tournament may never happen. This is such an exciting opportunity for Special Olympians to compete with other athletes from around Australia and New Zealand, in our beautiful city and using our amazing sports facilities.

I also recognise and applaud those who have contributed to getting our athletes to these Games: the coaches and administrators, the families and supporters. Without your dedication and commitment our athletes would not be here to compete in this event.

Without the athletes, though, we would have no tournament, and so I especially want to pay tribute to them. I recognise the huge achievement and commitment – the hours of practice and training - of all the athletes to reach this level of competition. While not everyone can be a medal winner, the personal achievements of participating and competing are every bit as worthwhile. I hope each and every one of you enjoys the experience of the Tournament, remembering that camaraderie, friendship, adventure, team participation and pride, sportsmanship and new personal bests are just some of the benefits of the Special Olympics experience.

We have a few days of excellent sport ahead of us, here in Cairns, as you can see from the program. May the athletes do their best, and may the spectators cheer long and loud.

Enjoy the Trans Tasman Tournament.

Letter from bob manning, cairnS mayor Letter from gavin king, member for cairnS

It is my pleasure to welcome everyone to the 2012 Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament to be held in Cairns.

We feel very honoured that our city has been chosen to host this tournament given that this is the first time the event has been held in Australia, and we look forward to making the more than 500 athletes and 150 coaches and carers from across Australia and New Zealand welcome.

This week is all about great sport and camaraderie. It aims to inspire and I am confident that it will achieve this goal, with so many athletes ready to show us their personal best efforts.

The Special Olympics is a very “special” movement indeed, supporting an estimated 3.5 million athletes in over 170 countries around the world.

The understanding and support of the Special Olympics allows people with an intellectual disability to discover the skills that allow them to improve their health, develop self-confidence and bring joy to themselves, their families and their community.

On behalf of the people of Cairns and the surrounding region, I welcome all athletes, their coaches, carers, friends and family to our city.

I hope you enjoy your time here and that you will return in the future for a longer and more leisurely stay to experience more of what our region has to offer.

Good luck to all the athletes and may the 2012 Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament be a great success!

Welcome to Cairns, our great city!

We are honoured to host, for the first time, the Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament.

As both Member for Cairns and Assistant Tourism Minister I understand the enormous benefit of sporting events to our region and the opportunity it provides to our local athletes to experience the thrill of being part of a representative team.

The Trans Tasman Tournament provides a valuable pathway for talented Special Olympic athletes to pursue their ambitions in their chosen sport and to reach their full potential through robust international competition.

With more than 320 Special Olympic athletes registered from all over Australia, New Zealand and Tonga this event will be as much a cultural exchange as is it about the contest. The joy of friendships experienced at events like these are often as rewarding or more enduring than the sport itself.

Team-work is key to any sporting event. Behind every athlete is a team of people – a dedicated coach, parents and carers, and event officials who work tirelessly, voluntarily, to bring this opportunity to life.

Our community is to be commended for its generosity and I urge local businesses and community organisations to continue to support this worthy event.

Athletes, I wish you a life-changing experience here in Cairns that may encourage even greater dreams and achievements.

Welcome to the Trans Tasman Tournament

I would like to personally welcome all of the athletes, officials and their families to Cairns for the Special Olympics Trans Tasman Tournament.

I am proud to have been involved with the Special Olympics Far North Queensland branch since it launched 14 September 2011. It started by offering participants a choice of athletics, ten pin bowling and horse riding and has grown this year to suit the interests of its athletes and now includes football, swimming, golf and tennis also.

As Patron of Special Olympics Far North Queensland region I look forward to working with the newly formed committee to continue to build the profile of Special Olympics in the region. I enjoy participating in regular sport such as tennis and cycling and as former Minister for Disability Services have seen firsthand the great work that Special Olympics does in helping to enrich the lives of participants.

It is great to see the Trans Tasman Tournament being held here in the Far North for the first time with over 300 athletes and 500 supporters travelling from New Zealand, Tonga and around Australia, including four local athletes to compete in the event. Securing this tournament for Cairns will pave the way for more Special Olympics events to be held in the Far North region in the future.

Australia is also lucky enough to host the 2013 Asia Pacific Games in December next year where they will welcome athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators from 25 nations across the Asia Pacific regions.

I hope that the athletes enjoy their time participating in this event and are able to achieve their personal best.

It is my great pleasure to welcome Special Olympians, their coaches, volunteers and families to the Trans Tasman Tournament in my home town of Cairns. We are proud to be your host city and hope you have a successful and enjoyable stay.

I was truly privileged to join our Australian team last year at the Special Olympics in Athens and celebrate the extraordinary achievements of our team. By the end I really felt part of the “Special Olympics Family”.

And it was a life changing event for me. For a person like me – not an active sportsperson (but good at watching and cheering) to join our team and the opening ceremony was thrilling.

In Olympic tradition, the opening ceremony saw each country enter the stadium.

I stood amongst our team, around 130-strong athletes, waiting to be called. As we all walked into the stadium, the Parthenon – the historic centre of Athens and the birthplace of the Olympic movement – our team was introduced... AUSTRALIA.

Instantly, I had goose bumps. My back was straight. My chin up. I was so proud.

To hear the support that erupted for our team, to see our athletes embrace the incredible atmosphere and enjoy the pinnacle of their sporting careers - was one of the greatest thrills of my life.

It was that ‘goosebump’ moment that really showed me that this wasn’t just about sport, it was so much more. I may not be a great athlete but my eyes have been opened as the power of sport, the spirit of the Olympic movement.

Special Olympics encourages every athlete to achieve their personal best, no matter what their level of ability.

Of course athletes strive to win medals, but it is also about courage, confidence and camaraderie. This attitude is summed up in their oath: ‘Let me win. But if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.’

It’s all about achieving our personal best – something we can all do, whatever we do.

Special thanks go to our local Organising Committee. In a very short time you’ve done great things.

Welcome Special Olympics athletes from Australia, New Zealand and Tonga to Cairns!
