New Zealand held their heads high

once again after coming away with

a win

against our

rivals the

Aussies Last month the Trans-Tasman Secondary schools’ competition was played, this tournament involved teams of 20 students (5 junior girls, 5 junior boys, 5 senior girls, 5 senior boys) from New Zealand, New South Wales, and Queensland coming together for 10 matches over the span of 5 days. Canterbury represented very well having four students named in the team and a further two being named as non-travelling reserves. Petra Curd-McCullough playing number 2 in the junior girls team, Caitlin Millard playing number 3 in the junior girls team, Leonie Marshal non-travelling reserve for the senior girls team, Tom Marshal playing number 3 for the junior boys team, Ryan Ko playing number 4 in the junior boys team, and Charlie Prince non travelling reserve for the junior boys team. The week was filled with a ton of excitement, nerves and lots of squash. Everyone played two games a day, the first three days being singles games, where we each played three of the top players from the two different Australian teams, the Thursday being played for the doubles trophy, and the final day being the actual test match where Australia fielded their combined team. Along with the competition we got to know our fellow kiwis well and did lots of team bonding. It was an amazing experience and we were all grateful for the opportunity to be named in the New Zealand Team and represent our nation. We would like to say a big thank you for all the support we had along the way. Ryan, Tom, Caitlin & Petra

How to raise a champion A presentation from Sport Canterbury in conjunction with Elmwood Normal School to debunk the myths of what some parents and coaches believe is the way to future sporting success for their child/children. To be a champion is to be the best version of yourself and this is the message we will be getting across throughout the evening. We will hear from four guest speakers including, Sharon Kearney, John Quinn, Jonelle Quane and Andrew Ellis who will share their personal experiences. Come along for an informative evening. When: Tuesday 17th September Where: Sixty6 on Peterborough Time: 6:30pm – 8:30pm Cost: $10

Juniors

Girls Tournament Series #3 Our best Girls tournament yet and what a wondeful day we had!! 26 girls entered out Junior Girls Touranment held at Christchurch Squash Club on Sunday 8th September. We had 4 Divisions ensuring all girls got competive matches, including a Division of Ungraded players, all these girls currently enjoying after school coaching programmes or having competed in previous girls competitions. Thankyou to all the helpers that made this day such a success, Ruby Beresford running tournament control, Lewis Stewart, Benedit Lim & Mike Beresford all stepping up and supporting some of our beginner players with the refereeing and marking, which is often a daunting aspect of playing Squash. Great to also see so many family members, grandparents, parents, siblings and one of our wonderful junior coaches all enjoying the games on court. The support and encouragment was wondeful to see and hear, once again creating such a fun and friendly atmosphere for these young girls to enjoy their sport. Of special mention is the epic battle between Xanthe McDougall and Simone Strange, as the girls all played 3 games in just a 4hr period we played games best of 5 to 11 points, however Xanthe and Simone managed to get full value for money out of their game with game scores 27/25, 20/18 and 11/7. Well done girls. We will be looking at running another Girls Tournament in Term 4.
