The Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival Association is pleased to announce the 2017 Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival Grand Marshals; all past Arroyo Grande Chamber of Commerce Citizens of the Year! This year marks the Har-
vest Festival’s 80th year and who better to recognize than this group of individuals who currently and for many years have been giving their time for numerous causes and organizations in the Arroyo Grande Valley. These individuals were chosen for their dedication to the community, years of support and volunteering at and for our local hospitals, day care, scouts, historical society, city improvement, cleanup and beautification, community events, law enforcement, public safety, youth programs, animal welfare, farming and ag preservation, seniors, church, youth sports, graffiti removal, counseling, animal and wildlife rescue, veteran programs, education, crisis support, hunger and homelessness, human rights, emergency, health and welfare and more, logging countless hours and making our community the wonderful place it is. The contributions made and impact to our area by our Grand Marshals, the past Citizens of the Year, many times is unknown and unrecognized, so this year we honor and thank them for their ongoing dedication, support and work in our com-munity.
They will be officially recognized on Friday evening at the KickOff of the Harvest Fes-tival and in the parade on Saturday.

Arroyo Grande Harvest Festival • September 22 & 23, 2017September 22 & 23, 2017 • Arroyo Grande Harvest Festival
Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest FestivalThe 80th Arroyo Grande Harvest Festival kicks
off this year on Friday, Sept.22nd and continues through Saturday the 23d. Nestled in the picturesque
old town village of Arroyo Grande, complete with a bub-bling creek and swinging bridge, this year’s theme is ‘Strut-tin Our Stuff’, a tribute to the many colorful roosters that strut the creeksideCentennial park, complete with gazebo,
picnic tables and walkways. The Harvest Festival is a cel-ebration of our roots, our agricultural history, a celebration
about us, for us. Across the swinging bridge lies Heritage Park, where lies the
Historical Society Barn and old schoolhouse. Continuing on to Nelson Park, further fes-tivities occur at the Rotary Bandstand, featuring local performance groups.
Opening night ceremony begins at 5:00 with Judith and the Live Krewe, leading the National Anthem and then jump-starting the festival with their lively New Orleans and Cajun style. Announcements that night include the introducing the Grand Marshals and Scarecrow Contest winners. The rotary club holds their annual fish fry, an event that always draws repeat customers. Located in Olohan Alley, you’ll find plenty of seating to listen to the music, eat, and check out the arts and crafts booths.
The following day begins at 10:00 with the Harvest Festival Parade. Banjer Dan will have warmed up the crowd with his whimsical songs and 5 string banjo picking. You’ll want to hear him entertain at Spelling Bee at the schoolhouse, starting 1:00 with repeat performances throughout the afternoon.
Following the parade, you’ll find Balooney the Clown as the entertaining Master of Ceremonies at the Rotary Bandstand. Beginning with a Diaper Derby at 12, local groups from the Coastal Dance and Performing Arts, Studio of the Performing Arts, andm dem-onstrations from the Arroyo Grande High School Robotics Team.
Critical Mass will be featured at the Centennial Gazebo from 11:30 to 3:30, with their lively renditions of classic rock standards. Stroll over to the Agricultural Pavilion for pro-duce displays, farm animals, a grape stomp. The atmosphere is completed by the coun-try music of the McKinley Boys, a lively local trio.
New this year we’ll have Wheelbarrow Races and a Water Balloon toss. Check the Harvest Festival website at AGHarvestFestival.com as new entertainment and contests are announced and follow news and announcements on the official Harvest Festival FB page at https://www.facebook.com/villageofag
The Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival is run completely by a team of volunteers which include almost every service club and organization in the area. The arts and crafts booths and food booths are are local vendors.

Our Logo Rooster is actually known to us here in the Village.
His name is Louis!
He was hand raised by Lindamae Friant Suprinski from a chick along with his sister Vuitton,
get it, Louis Vuitton! At about 9 months old or so he disappeared.
And where was he found?? In the Village happily living with all
the other Village Roosters.
This year’s logo was designed by Tom Goss and Vivian Krug Cotton.

Growing ContestIt’s time to start planting those flower and vegetable seeds for the 80th Annual Arroyo Grande Valley Harvest Festival. These traditional contests from the early days of the Harvest Festival have returned for 2017 and everyone is in-vited to participate. In 1976 the Burpee Seed Company issued a catalogue commemorating their 100thAnniversary by featuring a reproduction of their 1888 seed cata-logue.Arroyo Grande Farmers were fea-tured in the catalogue because they won many cash prizes for their out-standing vegetables and flowers. “At the turn of the century the pro-lific soils in Arroyo Grande Valley pro-duced prize winning bumper crops of cabbages, carrots, beans, peas, pumpkins, onions, flowers and other crops,” local Historian Doris Olsen wrote in the Santa Maria Times. “The local farmers won so many cash awards that they boasted they were the only valley in the world by rea-son of its prolific soil to be barred from the na-tional seed contest.” (The Arroyo Grande Farmers were banned to partici-pate so others would have a chance to win, however
they were given a lifetime achieve-ment award.)But…. You are not barred from the growing contests!
All ages are encouraged to join in and compete by bringing in their vegeta-bles, fruits, flowers, you name it, to be judged by the Visitors to the AG Pa-vilion who will vote for their favorite entry. Votes will be tallied at 1pm and winners announced shortly thereaf-ter. We have the Greatest Soil in the World, so let’s see what we can grow! Sign up form available at the festival, or visit the festival website, click on Homegrown and find the entry form. Entry is free, enter as many items as you’d like.
