President’s Message

Welcome to our summer newsletter for 2018 of the Finger Lakes Porsche Region!

Thank you all for your participation and a special note of appreciation to several

members who have helped organize events for us this year. Geza and Minou Hrazdina

for the Kindred Fare Dinner, Neil and Kathy Freson for the Clash at the Glen Event,

John Berndt for the Fox Run Show, Taste and Tour, and Dave Schwaner and Sue

Miller for the FLK picnic.

Please let us know if you have an idea or a favorite place to drive to and we’ll do our

best to promote the event and make it happen. Our region is unique as geographically

it is very large which spreads out our membership. Having a Saturday morning “coffee

and cars” or an impromptu meet up will help generate the camaraderie an organization

like ours develop. If you know of an event like a “cruise night” that would benefit from

some Porsches in attendance send an email to [email protected] and we’ll get the

word out. This is also the purpose of our “thumb drive” where we can be spontaneous

on events.

I have been more frequent on our email updates because we are in serious need of

updating our website. Our contract runs until year end and we’re only allowed four

updates a year. Worst case basis please check the events calendar to see what is

coming up for details. Neil, our vice-president, is able to update this as needed. We

hope to incorporate more pictures, videos, and blogs in the future. PCA National does

have several templates for websites that we can incorporate which we are currently

exploring. Please let us know if there are any volunteers who would like to assist us in

updating and maintaining the site. You can reply to [email protected].

We also encourage members to take pictures or contribute an article to our newsletter.

Also remember if you have some information you would like to pass along and writing

is not your thing we can always do an interview to capture your thoughts and pass

them along. We heard some great stories at the planning meeting on how some

members acquired their first Porsche. These are great stories to pass along.

We have several more months to our traditional driving season but by no means do we

forget about our Porsches. We are looking to incorporate the four doors during the off

season and even become a leader in PCA with this niche. As always more to follow.

Enjoy the journey,

Dom Dom Pullano, President

Wallowing in the Moment

As I type this using my right index finger, I’m grimacing at the reality that, due to shoulder

rotator cuff surgery, my track driving season has already ended for this year. But, hey, no

regrets! Track season started on a great note as I was able to bring both of my sons, Alex and

Brad, to drive my new race car at Watkins Glen. We are living up to our PCA motto - “It’s not

just the cars, it’s the people!”, and what a difference they make! As I always say to my boys,

while packing our gear and loading the car on the trailer, “It’s not about the car – it’s about

building memories…” In the Spring edition of The Frontrunner I described our adventure in

January when I took Alex and Brad to the 56th annual Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. That was a

gargantuan sports car racing event surpassed only by the epic Vingt Quatre Heures du Mans, Circuit de la Sarthe. My agenda, as it relates to Porsche, is to wallow in the moment – to identify every opportunity to engage family, friends and cars at interesting events – then drink it all in!

I’ve been writing professionally for many years on various topics – business, politics, culture,

human resources and sports car racing. One of the most popular articles I’ve ever published is

called How to Live in the Moment. When it was published online in the summer of 2016 the

article was Liked and Shared much more than my other articles! it was obvious that I had

touched on something important – but what was it? I think it is that people are thirsty for

quality of life. Think about this – if you’re a member of this Club then you have, by definition,

achieved a socio-economic level that affords an abundant lifestyle. But - you may still feel

there’s something missing. That something might be what I refer to as - Wallowing in the

Moment.

What memories do you cherish? And just as importantly, what memories are you still creating

today? While we all have many fond memories from the past it’s also very important to

appreciate the present and learn to live in the moment. Jon Kabat-Zinn, founding Executive

Director of the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachusetts Medical School

suggests: “Mindfulness means paying attention to the situation you are currently in, rather than

letting your mind wander into the past or future.”

What do I remember best about my trip to Rolex 24 at Daytona in January? Was it the Media

credentials on behalf of Victory Lane magazine? Or was it hobnobbing with top drivers including

Fernando Alonso, Juan Pablo Montoya, Scott Pruett and many others? What I remember best

about that trip is that I was accompanied by my two sons, Alex and Brad – that’s what made it

special.

As seasons come and go and I make choices about how to spend my precious time, my agenda

is to continue to actively drive my race car, attend professional events, take photos and write

stories for magazines, but preferably accompanied by Alex and Brad. With God’s infinite and

undeserved grace, I have made it come true many times and will keep trying.

This is our 22nd year as a PCA Region! Please check our busy Events for 2018, mark your

calendar, bring your family and your Porsche(s), take some photos and send me a few lines

along with your pictures so I can include them in the next edition.

In 1962 a certain young man’s fancy turned to love. So this young man, we’ll call him Hank, decided to improve his girl catching chances by acquiring the best flytrap he could think of – a red convertible. But not just any red convertible – a new, red Porsche 356 Cabriolet. Hank Kramer placed an order for a red 356 S-90 Cabriolet that in October 1962. Then he waited for the order to be processed and the car to be built in Germany and shipped to Oakland, CA. In the meantime, Hank stayed active in the dating scene and met a sweet young girl, Pat. Well, they were meant for each other and made plans for a wedding. And then the car came, a 1963 356 Cabrio. But it was not the red paint job he had ordered. It was white. Oh, what the heck, Hank already had the girl, so he didn’t really need a red one. Life was good. Hank and Pat were married in 1963, and the clock started. Hank and Pat raised a family, had

She used to accompany Hank to many a Finger Lakes social events, ever by his side. I remember the last time I saw Pat; it was at Bristol Harbor for the Fall Tour around 2009. This year, 2018, the Dr.-Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG stepped out and made a splash at the New York International Auto Show - Porsche made Hank a guest of honor, they picked up his car, prepared it and prominently displayed it. Don’t miss this short video of Hank and his 356: http://www.ifc.com/videos/welcome-to-the-family-hank-kramer Pat has gone on ahead of Hank, and I’m sure she’s waiting for Hank to bring up his Cabrio so they can start their next life together racing around from cloud to cloud, Pat’s hair blowing in the wind - in that white 356 drop top.

Full Circle – The Return of Ford and Porsche July 2018

Watkins Glen International, NY – July 1, 2018 – Surveying the grid on race day at the IMSA

Sahlen’s 6 Hours of Watkins Glen, I was up close and personal with the racers during the Fan

Grid Walk on Pit Lane. With curious race fans jockeying for position shoulder to shoulder, a

little boy asked his Mom to take his photo next to the 67 car, the Ford GT that Richard

Westbrook qualified P1 in GT Le Mans class. As she snapped the shot, I interceded: “Hi there!

Here’s a little history for your son. Do you see that these two Ford GT’s are numbered 66 and

67? That’s to honor the fact that Ford won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, 1967 and 1968.”

The lady smiled - “What a great story!” Indeed. What a great heritage for an iconic brand.

Ford is re-making racing history. This is the Ford factory team that, in a fit of pique against Enzo

Ferrari in the early 60’s, built a car to take on the legendary Ferrari. The reliable land rocket that

Ford built 50 years ago was named the GT 40 (GT for Grand Touring with ‘40’ representing its

height of 40 inches at the windshield to meet spec). Back in that era it was more than a long shot

for an American manufacturer to have a presence against dominant European marques. While in

1964 and ‘65 the GT 40 had spotty results, it all came together for the Ford Racing Team in June

1966. Essentially, what drove Henry Ford II to get into the race in the ’60s was simply a personal

grudge - having been stood up for a merger date with Il Commendatore. In the summer of ‘66 the

Ford GT 40 Mk II took it to the house, finishing 1-2-3 in Le Vingt Quatre Heures Du Mans.

Again (to show it wasn’t a flash in the pan) they won in 1967 with the Mk IV. And once more to

nail the Ferrari coffin in 1968 with the Mk I. There was no ‘mercy rule’ to interfere with Ford’s

dominance at Le Mans, so privateers won again a fourth time in 1969 with the elderly Mk I - the

only car in Le Mans history to win two races!

Wait, what about Porsche? Haven’t they also come full circle at these enduros? Porsche started

their winning ways at Le Circuit de Sarthe in 1951 when they won the small bore class with a 45

hp aluminum bodied car, a true Riesentotter (giant killer). But it was in 1970 that they won

overall with the iconic 917, the red and white 23-car. In fact, at Le Mans, Porsche are

synonymous with reliability and durability at speed. More than any other single marque, Porsche

have won Le Mans 19 times overall, with dozens of class victories. According to IMSA, records

for the current WeatherTech Championship series indicate that Porsche have 53 victories as a

manufacturer, followed by Chevrolet (Corvette) at 18 victories.

FRONTRUNNER PG. 10

But here at the Glen it’s been a different story for Porsche. The first overall Porsche win of an

enduro at Watkins Glen was in 1963, with a 718 RS61 piloted by Bob Holbert. Since then they

have won the 6-Hour race overall a total of 11 times, but the last time was in 1986 with Price

Cobb and Vern Schuppan in the highly successful Porsche 962. Currently, the marque is not

represented in the IMSA Prototype P1 class. Porsche does have a committed factory team in the

GTLM class (Pro drivers only), running the 911 and 912 mid-engined cars. Porsche also support

many privateers in the GT Daytona class (Pro and Amateur drivers) made up of rear engined 911

GT3 R’s.

The IMSA boys and girls here at the Glen are the same ones that I watched earlier this year at the

Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona and the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring. One year I will create a

travel budget to follow them during the entire schedule, which is grueling. As IMSA explains,

this flagship series competes at 12 of North America’s leading sports car venues, including

Daytona, Sebring, Watkins Glen, Road America, Lime Rock and Road Atlanta. Competition

takes place in three classes – Prototype, GT Le Mans and GT Daytona – and brings together top

drivers and competitive manufacturers. In my opinion, outside of Formula 1, I believe these are

the world’s best drivers.

Now that it’s been two years since Ford’s epic win at Le Mans, at the Sahlen’s Six Hours of The

Glen, I’m savoring the paint trading combat of the factory entries from Ford, Porsche, BMW and

Corvette running in GTLM. I mill around the double tent at the Ford Performance pit box for the

66 and 67 cars. In the fifth hour, I had one leg on the pitwall filming a short video of the 67-car

coming in for fuel and tires, It turns out that it had fallen behind its stable mate, the 66-car, due

to a broken front roll bar. But the 66-car still had a shot at Podium. The air temp was 95F+, so

you can imagine the temps inside the enclosed cockpits. Although the race cars are not air

conditioned, the drivers all wear a CoolShirt, which is essentially a special Nomex undershirt

with small water pipes coursing through the fabric through which cold water is pumped to help

keep the driver’s body temp under control.

Watching the Ford Performance crew in action, I notice a lady with a special task working with

the Ford team – Alyson Kimball is a Licensed Massage Therapist. Hey, stop smirking - it’s

rough out there, guys! Alyson’s demeanor, her sense of humor, collegiality and massage therapy

skills are a perfect antidote to the stress and anxiety wrought by endurance racing on drivers and

crew. Alyson explains: “I’ve been doing this since 1989. A lot of the fatigue these guys get starts

with coming over on the plane, in addition to the workouts they do on their own. And today at

Watkins Glen it’s a big hydration deal, with these high temperatures. Over a 2-hour stint, that

body heat builds up. There’s a lot of grip issues with this track, too. The drivers love the flow of

this track, but to keep the car right requires a lot of upper body strength, forearm and hand

strength. That’s what the drivers tell me, like Joey Hand. The stints changed because of

hydration in this event, cut from two hours to one. I work with the guys on a regular basis and

it’s great to come in a couple days early to sort out what the issues are.” Having an LMT on the

team is different from 50 years ago. But keep in mind the extreme g-forces that are part of the

job for racers today.

FRONTRUNNER PG. 11

Six hours into this heated event at The Glen on Sunday July 1st, the little boy who wanted his

photo taken with the Ford GTs picked a winning team. Ford is still re-making history - once

more it was Joey Hand (US) and Dirk Müller (Germany) in the 66-car who brought the

Checkered home for Ford Chip Ganassi Racing. Chevrolet was next on the podium with the 3-

car of Antonio Garcia (Spain) and Jan Magnussen (Denmark). The 911-car entry of Nick Tandy

(England) and Patrick Pilet (France) made P3 for Porsche, followed in 4th by the 912-car with

Earl Bamber (New Zealand) and Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium). These four cars all finished on

the same lap (190) after 6 hours of breakneck racing. The 912-car posted the fastest lap –

1:43.156, with an average speed of 108 mph (which includes all the pit stops…)

The highly competitive GTD Pro-Am class also had two other Porsche factory drivers: Joerg

Bergmeister (Germany) finished 6th in a GT3 R, and the only American factory driver for

Porsche, Patrick Long (US) finished 9th in a GT3 R.

By now readers have noticed my predilection for sports car racing, an affliction that I’ve carried

since witnessing classic races in my childhood in Havana. I hope that little boy who wanted his

photo taken is similarly blessed.

The evolution of Porsche has been quite stunning over the years when you take a moment to

think of it. There has been tremendous changes that still include much of the same basics from

several decades ago. “Shape of Things” was a British song by the Jeff Beck Group that just

reminds me of how the 911 series has evolved by being a bit smoother and sleeker yet still

recognizably distinctive. There still is the rear roundness that houses the engine and propels the

sports car as the driver sees fit. Porsche has continued its front theme of sloping hood,

elongated headlights, and low grill throughout its lineup. So recognizable that you can be ready

for an acknowledged flash of the headlights to an oncoming Porsche from a distance.

When you come upon another Porsche owner at rest, of course please pass the word of our

PCA Finger Lakes Region. We have cards available with membership information for both PCA

and FLK. Our region geographically is large so our membership is quite spread out. We want to

do our best to include as many as we can in our events and always welcome volunteers to put

events together.

This is why we’re starting “The Thumb Drive”. Keeping the Finger Lakes theme and knowing

that the fingers need a thumb this will be our way of inviting members to participate or suggest

spontaneous events that you may attending. This can be as casual as drinks by the lake or

coffee at an inn. If you would like to be included in “The Thumb Drive” please sign up on the

website or send an email to [email protected]. So that members don’t receive unwanted

email this will only go to those who sign up.

We look forward to our region evolving but keeping our original theme of a social group who

enjoy the cars, the area, and the people. The shape of participation over the years has definitely

changed. What we look to do is make the club more like “The Shape of You”. This is the title

from another British song by Ed Sheeran and fits well with the spontaneity and responsiveness

we look to bring to our region.

Drive safe and enjoy the journey,

Dom

Watkins Glen International, NY – June 2, 2018 – As we quickly approach the 70th anniversary

of this larger-than-life racetrack, we should recognize what this venue means to sports car racers,

as well as to NASCAR and Formula 1 enthusiasts. Try this - ask an experienced racer, “Have

you done The Glen?” and then watch their eyes light up, their eyebrows rise and with a broad

smile they will tell you all about their first date with The Glen. This is mecca - this is The Glen!

Experienced drivers and race fans will also share about schlepping through the muddy bog to the

FRONTRUNNER PG. 26

In August, 2000, a visionary leadership team of the Riesentoter PCA (Philadelphia) decided to

invite the Porsche Clash to The Glen. RTR President Bill O’Connell with Track Chair Mike

Andrews, Social Chair Craig Rosenfeld and Event Chair John Chatley “managed to pull off the

coup of the Century” by staging a 3-day HPDE and the very first Porsche Clash at the Glen – all

on the same weekend! I remember distinctly participating in the DE, and I still have a copy of

that schedule observed by hundreds of DE drivers and Clash racers while we shared the track for

3 days. Congratulations to Riesentoter for starting history!

Fast forward 19 seasons, the PCA Clash at The Glen is organized under the leadership of PCA

Zone 1. We are still witness to hundreds of racers towing in from many parts of the country.

This weekend we had 265 drivers representing 52 PCA regions, and as far away as Canada (East

and West), Florida, Alabama, New Orleans, Dallas, Chicago, Pacific Northwest, Connecticut,

Michigan, Oklahoma and South Carolina. The 265 racers are divided into four groups: Green,

Blue, Yellow and Red, with Red being the most sophisticated and powerful cars among the

entrants. Regardless of class, the individuals represented in each group range from nervous

neophytes to calloused, wizened hands. From 2010 to 2014, I was the Pace Car Driver at the

Clash. The number of racers was so large that, on the Formation Lap, as I drove into the Bus

Stop at the end of the back straight there were still cars leaving the false grid and entering the

track, a mile behind me, and all of them starting on the same lap.

There are at least 265 reasons to show up at the Clash. Each racer has their own agenda so I

paused to interview a couple of them – testimony to completely different purposes. For example,

the story goes that John Uglum had a Porsche 911 (997.1) Turbo and was fond of driving fast.

The White Plains, NY denizen

found his way to Spencer Cox’s

shop, SpeedSport Tuning in

Danbury, CT. Uglum chatted with

Cox and learned that he could

purchase a Cayman S race car for

use at the track, where he could

really stretch its legs. Well, after

trying it out Uglum was hooked - on

speed. Uglum also learned about

Monticello Motor Club in upstate

NY. He became a regular there and

managed his way around the very

technical, 18-turn, European style

track. Fast forward 7 seasons (we

can only drive on track 6 months a

year in the Northeast) and I found

Uglum exploring the edge of his

talent envelope at The Glen piloting

a blue GTC6, the 711 car, putting

down some fast laps. Uglum turned

his best lap on Saturday afternoon’s

Sprint Race 2, Red Run Group, with

a fantastic 1:54.382. If you’ve had a

date with The Glen, you’re drooling

now. That put Uglum on a podium

step – P3. Sunday’s White Group

enduro was another challenge,

starting under light drizzle which

progressed to a full rainstorm, but

also brought another podium – P1.

Uglum’s next event will be in

Germany, racing a Porsche Cayman in the fourth race of the 2018 VLN series, run at the

legendary Nürburgring using the full Nordschleife + Grand Prix configuration.

From a totally different perspective, I’ve known Riesentoter’s Maureen McVail for many years.

Back in the 1990’s she was hustling a beautiful black 911 (964) around the fast banking at

Pocono. I caught up with McVail on the paddock at The Glen where she was

excitedly advocating a different concept – increasing the number of women in racing.

McVail’s MoRacing (Mauh-racing) is focused on advancing women’s involvement in

motorsport and automotive industries. McVail explains: “The MO Racing team works to

advance motorsport opportunities on and off track for women, opening the door to automotive

industries and motorsports.” McVail has three cars for her aspiring women drivers (Porsche

Spec Cayman, Porsche GTB1 and BMW M3). Her team of workshop speakers, novice &

advanced drivers and advocates is gaining momentum. Savannah Ivanitski, Amy Dilks and Yoyi

Fernandez are accomplished drivers who are involved with the initiative. McVail adds, “My

agenda is to create that spark in the eye of a woman or girl that has discovered this incredible

pastime. A recent green student ‘just wanted to try this for her bucket list’. After the first session

- she was shopping for used Porsches.” You can monitor McVail’s venture through her

website, http://moracing.net/

The 333 car Cayman S in GTB1 of Scott Asplundh gets pushed by Clash volunteers onto

a scale to ensure it meets minimum weight requirements.

Watkins Glen International, nestled in the bucolic countryside of the Finger Lakes region of

upstate New York, is small town America with villages, hamlets and dozens of wineries situated

on the shores of numerous panoramic lakes. On race weekends, the area is redolent of smoke

from wood fires as campers gather with friends and family around burgers and steaks on BBQ.

Family friendly, dog friendly, bike/scooter friendly, Watkins Glen International is right at the

heart of my home region PCA Finger Lakes. As Hurley Haywood said: “I always love going

back to the Glen, it’s one of my most favorite race tracks in the world.”

Come see us, soon!

USING CLUB REGISTRATION DOT NET

Beginning with the FLK Region Anniversary Celebration at The Porsche Clash this year, we will expand on the use clubregistration.net for event registration. Clubregistration.net is an on line service used by numerous PCA Regions and other car clubs as a consistent means of signing up for various club activities. In many cases, the events are driver education or racing, but the site is also used for tours and social events, some with fees and some without. At times, the web site is referred to in the short form: clubreg.

First time users will set up an account with a login ID and password. This can be done at any time, even if not in regard to a specific event. After that, the registrant logs in, finds a certain event listed, and registers. If a fee is involved, payment is made with a credit card or through PayPal.

Beyond initially setting up the registrant Profile, we should also complete the Edit Vehicles and Edit Memberships items under My Account so that the site has additional helpful information to include in rosters. So, if you haven't already, please navigate to club registration.net and set up your account so you'll be ready to go the next time we use clubreg for event sign-up. LEVEL OF INVOLVEMENT

I like to be responsible or in charge. I’m a planner, a doer!

I’m great when I’m given an assignment and good direction. I’m a good committee person.

I prefer to work behind the scenes. I’m a team player.

I have some time to give but I don’t know where I’d fit in or who to ask.

I have limited time but want to give something back to the club
