Message from the Director
One of Geneseo’s goals, as specified by the SUNY Mission Review Process, is to increase the level of sponsored research on our campus. We are pleased to report that during the 2006-07 year our sponsored research expenditures exceeded $1.5 Million, our highest level to date. In addition, the number of academic departments with submissions and awards has also increased to their broadest representation in Geneseo’s external funding history. College support for research and scholarship has also returned to traditional levels. In collaboration with the Research Council, the Geneseo Foundation and the Office of Research Accounting, our office processed 300 internal funding applications from faculty members and students, resulting in 274 awards. Total internal funding for these formal programs, combined with other planned expenditures in support of research and scholarly activities, totaled over $200,000 during the 2006-07 year. One major new accomplishment during the year was the redesign and expansion of the Office of Sponsored Research web site. The new site, which was activated in early December, provides faculty, staff, and students with on-line access to a large variety of information related to internal and external funding, proposal development, and compliance with federal and state regulations. Our second major new initiative culminated on Tuesday, April 17, 2007, with Geneseo’s first annual day-long college-wide student research symposium, Geneseo Recognizing Excellence, Achievement and Talent (G.R.E.A.T.) Day. Four hundred and forty-one students, representing all of Geneseo’s academic departments, made presentations, performed, or exhibited artwork. The truly impressive talent of our students was in evidence on G.R.E.A.T. Day. Dr. Lynn Weber, who delivered an outstanding keynote address, described G.R.E.A.T. Day as the best student symposium she had ever attended. It was an exciting day and many people have commented on how wonderful it was to have the opportunity to see presentations in disciplines outside their own. Information and statistics for G.R.E.A.T. Day are included as a new addition to this report. As we look forward to our second annual G.R.E.A.T. Day, which will be held on Tuesday, April 22, 2008, we will be working with the Planning Committee to make logistical improvements and increase participation. I would like to thank Helen Thomas, Karie Frisiras, our Research Accounting colleagues Betsy Colón and Jason Sabel, and Sue Crilly in the Geneseo Foundation for their assistance in preparing this report, and for their excellent work in support of our mission during the year. I would also like to thank the members of the Research Council and the G.R.E.A.T. Day Planning Committee, and our colleagues Andrea Klein and Tammy Farrell in Campus Scheduling and Events, who contributed substantially to the success of our activities this year. Finally, we’d like to thank Theodore Frisiras, who provided the lovely photo of the ISC for our cover.
