This workshop will feature best practices related to text-dependent analysis including reading strategies that will help students closely read and engage with complex text and writing techniques that will lead to clarity in student responses. An emphasis will be placed on analysis and how to scaffold instruction in order to take students from a literal meaning of text to an analytical one. The role of questioning and the role of oral language will also be explored.

Je has been sharing writing strategies with teachers and students for over 25 years. Whether presenting at national conferences like NCTE, ASCD, or in classrooms or writing his books for teachers or middle grade readers, Je’s passion for writing and grammar inspires teachers and young writers to soar. When he’s not writing with his “revising” dogs at home near downtown San Antonio, Texas, he’s walking, talking, or doing sta development around the US (and sometimes New Zealand).

Writing WITH THE “WRITE GUY”

Jeff AndersonDON’T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY TO ATTEND THRE WORKSHOPS IN ONE DAY!

10 THINGS EVERY WRITER NEDS TO KNOWStudents learn to write by writing, but how do you get students’ prose flowing and keep them writing? What actually inspires them to write and write well? it is imperative as writing teachers that we hold fast to what is essential and true for writing instruction in the 21st Century. What are the non-negotiable strategies writers need to survive and flourish? Come see how to get your writers in motion, and use mentor texts or the study of models to sustain and inspire them. Come think, laugh, talk, and write. In this session, Jeff will tackle wisdom every writer needs to know from his book, 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know with a special focus on expository/explanatory texts.

REVISION DECISIONS: TALKING THROUGH SENTENCES AND BEYONDWriting is not a mere journey to be right; it’s one of making beautiful meaning. Students have to have OPTIONS to tinker and experiment with writing to clarify and elevate it. Let's engage writers in the muck of play and thought that is essential to making writing effective. Let's develop twenty-first century writers with all the flexibility needed to face the myriad of choices in an ever-evolving world. We can effortlessly teach grammar through revision and revision through grammar. The essentials of mentor text, talk, and process will be the focus.

MECHANICALY INCLINED: TEACHING GRAMAR AND EDITING IN CONTEXTThe words grammar and editing aren’t popular with most students (and many teachers). How do we help students become a part of this vital element of the writing process? How do we help students remember grammar and mechanics? Explore how weaving grammar and editing into the context of writing can be meaningful, interactive, and fun. Using wall charts, literature, and patterns, teachers discover how merging craft with grammar and editing can and will engage students.

Jeff’s DRAFT heuristic will be explored in the November 30, 2017 Workshop at MCIU, Revising as a Way to “Teach Grammar” at the Secondary Level.

Writing argumentatively in secondary classrooms requires listening to others, summarizing their views, and responding with one’s own ideas. This interactive workshop will introduce you to different teaching practices that demystify academic writing and address the heart of argument in every academic discipline. Participants will learn the core writing “moves” of argument (patterns of writing) and will learn how to help student writers of all levels enter academic conversations and debates. Each participant will leave with many ideas, including flexible templates, that will help students not only improve their writing, but also increase student reading comprehension as they begin to identify these “moves that matter” in the texts they read. Participants will also learn how to structure their secondary classrooms to allow students more opportunities to interact with each other as they read and write in the argumentative mode.

Student-Centered Classrooms for Today's Student with AJ Juliani

“Our learners today live in a completely different world than we did 25, 15, or even 10 years ago. Students have access to on demand information with the click of a button on their phones. In today's world, technology is growing exponentially, change is an expected part of our lives, and we have tools that have revolutionized the way we think about teaching and learning. Yet, on the fundamental level of learning we know that all of this change needs to be channeled for it to have a positive impact on our students and in our classrooms. This session goes into detail on how to build a student-centered classroom that promotes authentic learning experiences for all students. Attendees will learn:

• how student-choice fuels engagement• how to use technology with a learning purpose• what innovative teaching practices impact a diverse set of learners• why student-centered classrooms promote equity and ownership of learning

• Innovation in education starts with our students. It strengthens relationships, and deepens learning experiences. Student choice and technology allow teachers to build true engagement with all students regardless of their background.”

A.J. Juliani is the director of technology and innovation at Centennial School District. Previously, Juliani worked as an education and technology innovation specialist for the Upper Perkiomen School District, and a K-12 technology staff developer in the Wissahickon School District, where he also taught middle school and high school English. Juliani's latest book, "Empower: What Happens When Students Own Their Learning," is currently available from IMPress, LP.
