FROM THEDIRECTOR

OUR MISSION

The mission of the Office of Multicultural Affairs

is to insure that activities, events and programs attract

and meet the needs of Chesapeake College’s

culturally diverse students.

STUDENT LIFE

• UHURU UHURU (“freedom” in Swahili) was organized in 1982 to better serve the needs of Chesapeake College minority students and establish closer ties with the minority communities of Chesapeake’s five supporting counties. UHURU sponsors and co-sponsors many activities such as trips and other campus events. • Athletics Intercollegiate athletics are offered as part of a well-rounded experience. Chesapeake College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association, Region XX and the Maryland JUCO Athletic Conference. Chesapeake offers men’s soccer, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s baseball, women’s softball and volleyball. • Organizations The College offers students the opportunity to become part of the Chesapeake College family including a number of student organizations such as the Student Government Association, Peake Players Drama Club and Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Our services strive to meet the needs of our culturally diverse student population. • Academic Advising We help students meet their education requirements for graduation, transfer to a four year college or university, or obtain training for a career. Chesapeake College participates in ARTSYS, a computerized data information system that helps ease the transfer of students from Maryland community colleges to all institutions within the University of Maryland System. • Academic Support Services We provide referrals to support services such as the Writing Center, Academic Computer Lab, Academic Support Center and Student Support Services to insure that each student is a success at Chesapeake College. Special accommodations will be made for students with disabilities. All Chesapeake College students may access the services mentioned free of charge. • Community Outreach We offer college workshops at area schools, community centers and churches to discuss educational opportunities. The College’s Multicultural Advisory Committee sponsors programs that enhance cultural diversity on the Mid-Shore.
