Organization

Welcome address

It is with great pleasure that I can invite you on behalf of the International Institute of Welding and on behalf of CWS to Croatia, to Dubrovnik and Cavtat. The Croatian Welding Society, as the executive organizer, has the special honour of organizing the 60th anniversary Annual Assembly along with the accompanying International Conference.

Regarding the area it covers, Croatia belongs to the group of smaller European countries. Nevertheless, welding in Croatia with its long tradition has always ranked high regarding its significance. The 260 m long bridge of fully welded design, spanning the river Sava in Zagreb was one of the first of its kind in Europe. The bridge is still in use today. Or, for example, the Croatian shipbuilding ranks fourth in the world at present. Recognizing the importance of welding, the Croatian Welding Society was founded 55 years ago and has been ever since continuously involved in training of the welding personnel, organization of symposia, welding fairs, publications of technical literature, development of standards and regulations, etc. We are especially proud of the Journal Welding with its 50 years of continuous publication. Over the last ten years, the articles have been published not only in Croatian but also in the English language. We are glad that the 60th anniversary of the International Institute of Welding is starting precisely in Dubrovnik, in Croatia. A lot of important activities are ahead of IIW. We hope to achieve many targets with both the development of the IIW Business Plan and IIW White Paper amongst others. The IIW programme of certifying personnel and companies will be promoted and, most certainly, the improvement of welding personnel training will continue.

The new IIW slogan "world of joining experiences" needs to show that our aim is not only to improve the image of IIW and welding in general, but that we also want to maximally contribute to the overall global quality of life.

CWS will spare no effort to make this Annual Assembly and the accompanying International Conference organizationally at the highest level possible, just following in the footsteps of the previous organizers.

The commissions and other working units will work at the premises of the University of Dubrovnik. The participants will have at their disposal the rooms with numerous computers and free Internet access. The International Conference will take place in Cavtat, at the Hotel Croatia. The title "WELDING & MATERIALS Technical, Economic and Ecological Aspects" allows cooperation of a large number of experts and combines, apart from the technical, also the increasingly present economic and ecological requirements.

For this Annual Assembly and the International Conference, we have chosen the adjacent towns of Dubrovnik and Cavtat, the two pearls of the Adriatic Sea. Because of its beauty and significance, Dubrovnik has been included in the UNESCO World Heritage site. Apart from the beauty, Dubrovnik offers something else as well, and that is, the sense of freedom. This old republic was the first in the world to abolish slavery, long ago, in 1272. Therefore, it is no wonder that the flag of Dubrovnik has remained until the present days the one with the large letters LIBERTAS – a word understood in almost any language in the world. The Organizing Committee have planned also many social events and tours to the Dubrovnik and Cavtat surroundings and invite you to make the most of it. We are looking forward to seeing you in Dubrovnik and Cavtat, in Croatia, and in the manner of a good host, we will try to do our best to make your stay here as pleasurable and fruitful as possible.

President of Organizing Committee

Prof.dr.sc. Slobodan Kralj

Welcome to Croatia !

Croatia is a central European country located on the Adriatic. It stretches in the form of an arc from the Danube river in the northeast to Istria in the west and Boka Kotorska in the southeast. It covers an area of 56,538 sq. km with the territorial sea covering an area of about 31,900 sq. km. Geographically, it is situated on the crossroads between Central Europe and the Mediterranean.

The Republic of Croatia is a European parliamentary state and part of the European political and cultural history. By size, it can be classified among the middle-sized European countries, such as Denmark, Ireland, the Slovak Republic, or Switzerland. The area of Croatia can be divided into three major natural and geographical regions:

The first, Pannonian and Peri-Pannonian area comprises the lowland and hilly parts in the eastern and north-western Croatia. In this part mountains higher than 500m are rare. Most of the area is being used for farming and livestock breeding. Counties like Slavonija and Baranja are the most suitable for growing cereals, and humid valleys and the hills are richly afforested.

The second is the hilly and mountainous area south of the Pannonian region. It separates the Pannonian Croatia from its coastal belt and is the least developed. Its future development will be based on the transit importance and non-pollution which is a perfect ground for rural tourism and production of healthy food and clean water.

The third is the Adriatic coast. It is one of the most indented coasts in the world. There are 1185 islands and islets with the total length of 4058 km, 1777 km being the mainland coastline itself. The largest island is Krk. Other large islands include Cres, Brač, Hvar, Pag and Korčula. The largest peninsula is Istria and the largest bay is the Kvarner Bay. The coastal area can be further divided into the northern (Istria and Kvarner) and southern part (Dalmatia).

The capital of Croatia is Zagreb. It is a political, industrial and cultural centre of Croatia. The city celebrated its 900th birthday in 1994. It has a rich civil and cultural heritage. The roots of Zagreb date back to the prehistoric period (Veternica Cave, Palaeolithic) as well as to the Roman era (Scitarjevo). The historical part of the city, the Upper Town and Kaptol are a unique urban core, even in the European terms. The old town and its streets and squares can be reached on foot, starting from the Ban Josip Jelacic Square, the central part and the heart of Zagreb.

Dubrovnik

The well known city of Dubrovnik lies in the south of Croatia. It occupies an area of 364.05 square kilometers, extending from the Duboka Ljuta gorge in the east, to Imotica in the west - a distance of 53 kilometers. The city of Dubrovnik is surrounded by a group of islands known as the Elaphite archipelago (Šipan, Lopud, Koločep, Tajan, Olipa, Jakljan and Daksa).

Dubrovnik is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and is rich in cultural and historical monuments. It is a city of a unique political and cultural history, one of the most attractive and famous cities of the Mediterranean and of the World. The sightseeing of Dubrovnik and its monuments requires several days. However, already a walk through Stradun, through narrow streets and small squares, monumental ramparts and fortresses, provides enough opportunities to experience the millennial beauty of its shell-shaped urban core. Dubrovnik offers individual choice, it offers centuries of building, stone-cutting, carving and engraving, the Duke's Palace, libraries, the oldest pharmacy in the south of Europe. The Dubrovnik Museum in the Duke's Palace keeps 15,500 exhibits in its cultural and historical department. A collection of furniture from the 17th-19th century uniforms of dukes and councillors, aristocratic garments and many other items are exhibited in the authentic halls of the palace.

Cavtat Small town of Cavtat lies extended on the most southern part of the Croatian Adriatic coast. It has developed from the ruins of the ancient Greek settlement of Epidaurus on the slopes of two peninsulas: Rat and Sustjepan. The downfall of the Western Roman Empire and the invasion of Avars and Slavs caused the fall of Epidaurus. The legend says that the refugees from Epidaurus fled to the protected settlement of Laus Lave Ragusa from which Dubrovnik originates. It is not hard to perceive the spiritual and architectural bond between Dubrovnik and Cavtat. Historical sources often call Cavtat as Ragusa Vecchia which very clearly confirms that connection In times of the Dubrovnik Republic, Cavtat was the second most important administrative and trading place. It was a port where people from Konavle had their own administrative and juridical control and where the masterminds like Baltazar Bogišić (writer and scientist), Vlaho Bukovac (painter) and Frano Supilo (journalist and politician) were born. Today's Cavtat has a population of 1500 inhabitants. It consists of an ancient nucleus and the settlements of Obod, Zvekovica, Poluganje and Mećajac. Vegetation is typically Mediterranean and includes macchia, the evergreen woods of pines, cypresses and holm oaks. On the slopes of Snježnica, interesting mixed woods of pines, oaks, ash-trees, elm-trees and cypresses can be found. Cavtat also offers excellent recreational opportunities. One of the major tourist attractions is the natural monument called the Šipun Cave. Accommodation facilities are located in the background of the town port and the Tiha cove. Nice beaches stretch all the way to the Cape Prahljevac. The main permanent cultural event is the Cavtat Summer (July - August), with a number of concerts of harmony-singing groups, folk music groups and sports tournaments (water-polo).
