PE3 workshops move into Pennsylvania In early February, two very enthusiastic individuals left the ice and snow in

Pennsylvania to come to Houston to receive personalized training on the OffshoreEnergy Center’s Project E3: Expanding Energy Education curriculum guide. BilldesRosiers, external affairs coordinator for Cabot Oil & Gas Corporation, and MelissaTurlip, president, Junior Achievement of NEPA, Inc., JA Mericle Family Center forEnterprise Education, spent three days with Doris Tomas, OEC’s education directorand Joy Sloan, OEC’s education programs assistant to learn about the PE3 workshops.

Melissa first learned about the OEC’s education programs when she attendedHouston’s Energy Day in October and met Donna Wheeler, the OEC’s MOLU manager. Donna explained the three initiatives of the Offshore Energy Center toMelissa and thus began the relationship.

Through the generosity of Cabot Oil and Gas Corporation, Bill and Melissa traveled to Houston to learn as much as possible about the PE3 workshops and theMobile Oilfield Learning Unit (MOLU). Their training consisted of hands-on exerciseswith many of the 50 activities in the PE3 guide and a visit to the Ocean Star OffshoreDrilling Rig Museum.

After the three-day intensive study, they headed back to Pennsylvania ready to offerworkshops on the OEC’s behalf. The OEC has provided them with a Playing withPetroleum Kit and Knowledge Box as well as PE3 guides for their participants. OnMarch 6, the Bill and Melissa “Road Show” held their first workshop for 24 teachers in the Susquehanna County region. The teacher participants responded with great reviews of the program and are anxious to have the MOLU in their schools.

Melissa and Bill are in the process of arranging visits for 20 schools in seven Pennsylvania counties including: Susquehanna, Wyoming,Lackawanna, Luzerne, Wayne, Lycoming, and Dauphin. These visits will potentially impact more than 4,000 students.

Recent workshops generated wonderful responses fromteachers. Here are just two of them.

OEC participates in “Mind Trekkers” at San Jacinto College

The Offshore Energy Center was invited to participate in the MichiganTechnological University’s Mind Trekkers Event held March 12 -13 at SanJacinto College’s Central campus. OEC’s Doris Tomas, Peggy Cole, TrinaClaire and Donna Wheeler led literally thousands of students in activities– either in making a polymer (better known as slime to the kids) and micro-fossil rubbings.

Thursday evening was open to the public and although activities wereavailable and utilized, there was more time for discussions about the OceanStar Museum.

Approximately 8,000 sixth graders from area schools participatedincluding LaPorte, Deer Park, Channelview, Galena Park, Sheldon andPasadena.

Michigan Technological University’s Mind Trekkers is a traveling festivalthat uses hands-on activities to encourage learning and exploration ofSTEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) fields. MindTrekkers STEM Road Shows bring the WOW! of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to the hands and minds of K-12 studentsunder the inspirational guidance of the Mind Trekkers team consisting ofundergrad and graduate students.

In the program, Michigan Tech student volunteers demonstrate scientific principles in an appealing way using hands-on activities. The target audience for the program is middle and high school students. MindTrekkers events take place in a non-traditional atmosphere similar to a carnival in which all of the activities relate to STEM. The Mind Trekkersteam members act as role models and near-peer mentors as they help students define their interests and aptitudes in these high-energy events fullof activities lasting between 30 seconds to 3 minutes.

Three early arrivals get the jumpon the crowds.

Galena Park ISD students are verypleased with their “slime.”

OEC’s Donna Wheeler andTrina Claire “man” the booth.

In January of every year, a group of similarly dressed men andwomen arrive at the museum, their notable demeanor bringingattention to them from walk-in guests. Although dressed the same, upon closer inspection, one can find hints in the form of ties andlapel pins that demon-strate a pride in whoand from where eachof the 70 people in thegroup come. Thesedistinguished men andwomen are part ofNational DefenseUniversity’s (NDU)I n t e r n a t i o n a lFellowship programin Washington, D.C.,whose v i s i t to theOcean Star is consis-tently a highlight oftheir trip to Texas.

The Fellows consist of senior military officers representing 64 different countries, speaking 59 differentlanguages, and their main purpose is to learn about varioussocial, political, and economic aspects of the countrythrough visiting businesses, government institutions, universities, and cultural sites. To do this, they must firstbe invited to participate in the year-long Master’s programat NDU, either in the National War College (NWC) or theEisenhower School (ES), by the Chairman of the JointChiefs of Staff. During their year in the United States, the Fellowsmeet with high level military, government, and private industry leaders, and they visit 24 states as part of an extensive Field Studiesportion of their program.

Because the Fellows are in the United States for one year, NDUhopes that they gain a broader understanding of the United States

outside of Washington, D.C., and visiting Texas exposes them to aunique aspects of American culture, economics, and government.Their trip to Texas is focused mainly on energy issues and security inthe U.S., and they visit the Ocean Star (Galveston), Johnson Space

Center (Houston), Lockheed Martin (Houston),the Sixth Floor Museum (Dallas), and the FortWorth Stock Show and Rodeo to meet their edu-cational goals. In Houston, the Fellows meet withexecutives from various petroleum companies, soa visit to the Ocean Star Museum allows them togain a basic understanding of the oil and gasindustry, and put their meetings with executivesinto context.

In all, NDU, the Fellows, and the countlesspeople involved in making their program on site

and in the field asuccess, mutuallylearn much fromtheir interactionsthroughout theyear. Multipleopportunities tolearn about theFellows’ culturesthrough holidayc e l e b r a t i o n s , i n t e r n a t i o n a llunches, and travel,undoubtedly result

in a myriad of stories, moments, and laughter shared by the Fellows, and the Ocean Star is glad and proud to consistently be part of the program’s ongoing commitment to learning about the social, political, and economic facets of Texas, and how we contribute to theoverall culture in the United States.
