• How is the administration of the ELPA Initial Screening different from the Spring ELPA?– ELPA Initial Screening

• Year-round availability; scored by coordinators; materials can remain at school while in use; only given to students once; used to identify potential ELLs; students must be identified within 10 days of enrollment.

• How is the administration of the ELPA Initial Screening different from the Spring ELPA?– Spring ELPA

• Available annually from mid-March through April; longer assessment length requires multiple days of administration; scored by contractors; all materials must be returned; identifies ELLs potentially ready for exit from services.

Description of Activity Start Date End DateCoordinators should review their student reports at the start of the new school year. If listed on the Secure Missing Material Report from the spring, coordinators should follow-up with building coordinators to see if the material was found.

Pre-ID Window Opens – Coordinators verify that intended students have been identified, and add students who are not included in the list. 12/5/2011  

Coordinators identify key testing staff and assign roles. The roles and responsibilities for staff in administering assessments are included in the Professional Assessment and Accountability Practices for Educators. This document is available electronically at www.michigan.gov/meap.

• Reviewing 2011 results and next steps– All sites that tested last year should

have their paper reports now; electronic reports are available online.

• 2012 ELPA Calendar– Print and distribute the 2012 calendar

to coordinators and ELL staff

Key Fall Spring ELPA Activities

• Insuring that your students have the proper status in MSDS: FLEP/LEP, codes, and dates– All students who are new and previously

identified ELLs need to have their status checked each fall

– Students who are not properly exited by the count date are required to be assessed during the spring.

• Requesting exemptions for students with 504 or IEP plans– Although the exemption system will

not open in the Secure Site until later this year, coordinators should gather the 504/IEP plans for students who may require an exemption or accommodation during the spring.

• Updating your district/school contact information in EEM– The key to remaining in contact with

our office and up-to-date on assessment information is to ensure that your ELPA coordinator(s) information is correct in EEM

On the Horizon

• Tested roster and your student’s demographic information – By the time the Tested Roster opens in the

spring it will be too late to update your student demographic information within MSDS.

– Please review and correct student demographic information before it’s too late.

On the Horizon

• Data systems that help you understand your results– There are a number of school data

systems on the market that can help you interpret your student results. Contact your ISD and/or district offices to see if they already have access to such a system.

• Is your school ready for the ELPA Online?– The ELPA assessment piloted the

assessment online statewide in 2011.

– Positive results from the pilot have encouraged us to move forward with the system, so let us know if you are interested in participating.

• PreID – The ELPA PreID window is open

December 5, 2011 through January 13, 2012.

– Use this window to register students who will participate in the Spring assessment and have the ELPA contractor generate student barcode labels instead of your school.
