October at Dungog—Twilight Runs After deciding to do 60 runs of twilight Team Penning on the Friday afternoon at Dungog due to a forecast that the weather was going to be stinking hot we kicked off around 6.15pm. It was trial and error but things went off without a hitch. Saturday morning came and the kids had their turn and the rest of the Team Penning runs were finished off. We had plenty of time before our twi-light Arena Sorting was to start so members eagerly put their names down for a cut out. Congratulations to Vanessa Koch who was our cut out winner. All hands on deck to get the arena changed for arena sorting and then the rains started. We waited a couple of hours and once the ground was checked and assessed as being safe we started on our twilight Arena Sorting. There was plenty of drizzle and a touch of rain on Saturday night but Sunday morning brought fog and an absolutely beautiful day. Once again the kids had their turn at Arena Sorting and the adults did the last of their runs. An early finish allowed there to be plenty of time for pack up followed by the usual presentation. How wonderful it was to get home with still plenty of day light left.

Background:
Liz currently lives in Branxton on a farm with her husband Fred
who is known as the phantom husband cause no one ever sees
him but a few know he exists. They have several head of cattle
and horses. She is one of our regular judges and holds the position
of Vice President for VTP.
Liz’s mum always said she wasn’t born she was pulled out of a
horse’s foot. Liz lived with her family which included 3 non horsey
sisters in Hambelton Hill which is on the other side of Singleton
until the age of 5. They then moved to Branxton where her dad
became a coal miner and her mum was an aged care nurse. Hors-
es have been Liz’s life since a very young age and she even broke
in her first horse when she was in sixth class. Show jumping,
sporting, team penning and rodeos for 15 years are just some of
the things she has turned her hand to but admits that team pen-
ning is the most sociable. There was nothing she loved more than
sitting around and listening to the ‘old timers’ talking and working
with horses and believes most of her skills came from these im-
pressionable times.
Liz recalls a nearby neighbour when she was a kid that she
thought was absolutely wonderful because he always had a new
horse for her to ride. Regardless how feral they were when she
got on them by the time she had finished with them they were
wonderfully trained. Little did she know that he was a horse deal-
er and would buy them cheap and sell them and make a pretty
penny after she had put all the hard work in.
At one point in time her husband used to have racehorses but was
never a rider. It was at this time that Liz was breaking and retrain-
ing race horses off the track. Her and her husband even owned
the horse that won the Melbourne Cup in 1987 “Kensei”.
