SAXON TAKES HOSPITALITY REALM BY DIGITAL STORM

WITH THE LAUNCH OF NEW WEBSITE

September 20, 2013 | The Saxon Hotel, Villas and Spa has

announced the launch of their newly redesigned website,

www.saxon.co.za, offering users an improved and innovative design

concept in conjunction with an easy-to-use booking process,

enhanced social media assimilation, and seamless integration of

emerging and established technologies.

―As the Saxon enters into a new age with our brand refresh, we

couldn‘t think of a better time to transform our website,‖ said George

Cohen, Managing Director. ―The website‘s enhanced functionality puts

the Saxon at your fingertips, enriching your virtual engagement with

the Saxon brand on any mobile device. We are still only at the

beginning phases and over the next few months will be adding

pioneering applications to the site.‖

To create an interactive and engaged guest experience, the website

has revolutionised the hotel industry‘s approach to sharing, by

allowing guests the opportunity to not only download up-to-date

brochures directly to their desktop or mobile device, the website also

gives every visitor the accessibility to save images in low or high

resolution formats directly from the site.

This engagement will be further developed with media in particular

with a dedicated press room with the latest hotel news and press

clippings as well as a live feed from Trip Advisor. ―To thrive in this new

age of hospitality, a brand needs to go beyond the data and immerse

itself in the culture to develop relevant marketing,‖ added George

Cohen. ―Our marketing and sales team highlighted new segments and

through research found ways not only to understand the needs of our

guests in the digital space, but also the way in which they have come

to know the Saxon.

It also helped us to make subtle changes to design that would

resonate. In terms of language usage, we have created engaging and

personalised content to further enhance the guest experience by

speaking to the heart of our guests, as it is about their experience and

finding a way to create a unique journey for them. Overall a trend was

revealed for the high level of customer's appreciation for the Saxon‘s

traditions, history and heritage and the team saw a great desire for our

digital channels to reflect that tradition, while also demonstrating that

we are speaking to the audience in a way that is culturally relevant.”

Marataba Safari Lodge’s addition to the award-winning MORE portfolio launches a major new attraction in experiential game viewing and trail walking in South Africa. Located in the centre of Marakele Game Reserve in Limpopo’s historic Waterberg range, Marataba offers Big Five game viewing amidst a wealth of crystal-clear rivers, pools, waterfalls and verdant mountain terrain. The property links MORE’s circuit of 5-star game lodges east and west of the country. In the Lowveld, Lion Sands Game Reserve is unique in operating in both the Kruger National Park and Sabi Sand Wildtuin. In the North West’s Kalahari thornveld, MORE manages the upgraded Madikwe Safari Lodge in what is becoming a world renowned safari experience. Marataba Safari Lodge was recently acquired by a consortium of Dutch families in a deal worth R200m, an initiative aimed at supporting safari tourism. MORE was invited to manage this project on the basis of its leading role in experiential safari tourism in tandem with conservation and community development. MORE CEO Robert More calls the investment far-sighted, in an area of South Africa which has largely been overlooked. Marataba is perfectly placed for the tourism market in Gauteng, 250km driving distance from Johannesburg on the N1 through Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) to Thabazimbi. Hollywood’s vision of the ultimate big-game experience was defined by the Oscar-winning Out Of Africa, in which Robert Redford romanced Meryl Streep around the campfire in front of large, elegant safari tents. That setting anticipated Marataba’s unique advantages in today’s tourism market. Says Robert More: “Marataba is a great opportunity to meet the growing demand for experiential tourism. It is malaria free, breathtakingly scenic and ideally suited for today’s photographic safaris. The Lodge comprises 15 luxury tents in an exclusive 23,000 hectare reserve. It will pair well with Madikwe Safari Lodge to the west, creating the ultimate family safari circuit. . MORE’s reputation as a pace-setter for the increasing concern about wildlife conservation is shown on its www.morehotels.co.za website. Its photo galleries are packed with high-quality visuals of wildlife taken by guests and rangers on its properties, on game drives and walking trails, and from its lodges and signature treehouses. These images feature in top travel publications and in blogs and websites online, emphasising how tourism must now be geared to conservation and community development to ensure its sustainability. The demand for more trained field rangers means that MORE will relocate its training school from Lion Sands to Marataba, where there greater scope for expansion to meet the increasing demand in the safari business. Says Robert More: “It’s important to be proactive in our tourism industry. MORE does continuous research with its visitors domestically and internationally to find out what they want from their safari stays. Lion Sands and Madikwe have their own unique, world class resources which we are constantly developing. The reason we have invested in Marataba is that is in one of the country’s most spectacular game reserves, and it offers us a wealth of fabulous game tourism advantages that we will develop.”

Executive Chef Thiery Gourdin

After completing high school and at the tender age of 18, Thiery started without much conviction a two-

month training in the kitchen of a 5* hotel in the North of Mauritius as a kitchen commis. The resort's

Hotel School of Mauritius where he was selected by a jury to train in the kitchen section and graduated

discovered but where he also discovered his passion for food and the art of cooking. From then on he

went up through the ranks in numerous 5* resorts of international hotel groups and has not stopped

gaining experience and perfecting his art since.

In 2007, Thiery joined Heritage Le Telfair team as Executive Sous-Chef, to subsequently be promoted

Portions: 4 Portions

Preparation: 20 minutes

Cooking: 1 hour and 30 minutes

Ingredients

Venison Leg : 600gms cut into even cubes,

seasoned with salt and pepper

Dry Spices

4 cloves

1 tbsp ground coriander

1 tbsp ground cumin

1 tsp turmeric, ground

1 tsp curry powder

2 tbsp oil

300g canned tomatoes, finely chopped

Masala Paste

1 onion, peeled and finely chopped

2 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 red chili finely chopped

1 green chilli finely chopped

Method

Masala Paste: Place all the ingredients in a

food processor and puree to a smooth paste,

or ground them together in a mortar.

To Cook: Place the oil in a large saucepan

and place it over a medium heat. When the

oil is hot add the dried spices and fry them for

a minute until aromatic. Add the masala

paste to the pan and stir it so it is combined

with the dry spices, fry it for a couple of

minutes. Stir the venison into pan so that it

coated with the paste, cook it for a few

minutes and turn them occasionally so that

the venison is brown. Stir in the tomatoes

and add around half a cup of water to the

curry. Reduce the heat to the lowest

temperature and leave it to cook for 1 1/2

hours, stirring regularly so that the

ingredients cook evenly and the bottom

doesn't burn, add more water if it becomes

dry. The meat should be tender and the

sauce thick. Add seasoning if needed.

If you have ever had the privilege of witnessing that lazy

fin lifting out of the water and then flopping down again;

and a few minutes later seeing a huge tail flapping above

the level of the ocean, then you‘ll appreciate the thrill of

whale watching.

It‘s so close to a spiritual experience that it can bring a

tear to the most hardened eye.

To ensure a truly memorable close-up and personal

encounter with this giant mammal of the seas, White

Pearl Resorts, Ponta Mamoli, on the coast of

Mozambique, has introduced whale watching from a

private boat that launches a few steps away from this

five-star luxury hotel that has a sophisticated yet laid-

back philosophy.

There is neither the need to drive to a popular tourist

venue nor to be squashed in with many other travellers –

White Pearl Resorts‘ guests can enjoy the ultimate

authentic adventure with a knowledgeable guide who will

fill enquiring minds with interesting facts about the

physical aspects and behavioural patterns of the whales

of this region. They include the Southern Right and the

Humpback whales; the latter being more prolific. If you

spot a stream of spray rising three to four metres into the

air it is sure to be a Humpback. This whale breathes

through two blow holes located on the top of its head.

They weigh up to 45 tons, can remain submerged for up

to 30 minutes and are able to dive to depths of 200

metres.

However, remember it‘s not only the whales that offer an

invigorating activity. Swimming with the dolphins at Ponto

D‘Ouro is another fulfilling experience – and again, at

White Pearl Resorts, guests are assured a personalised

encounter, riding in a boat that transports only the hotel‘s

guests.

White Pearl Resorts‘ management team is on a quest to

offer guests the most authentic, unusual and inspirational

experiences that will live in their memories for a lifetime.

Brighten: Cut a slice of

ripe papaya and remove the

seeds and pulp (save the pulp

for a snack later—it‘s great for

digestion). Rub the inside of

the papaya peel on your

cleansed face, focusing on

lines around the mouth and

eyes, crow‘s feet, thinning

temples, neck and hands. Let it

dry for 15 to 20 minutes, then

rinse with tepid water. This

mask can be done twice a

week. ―The enzymes in papaya

exfoliate, repair sun damage,

diminish age spots and smooth

skin. Your skin will look

brighter, with a more

polished finish.

Exfoliate: Combine 1

tsp honey and 1 tsp olive oil.

Separately, prepare a packet

of plain oatmeal, using less

water than called for so it

forms a thick paste. Next, add

the honey and olive oil

mixture to the cooked

oatmeal. Apply as a scrub,

gently rubbing it in small

circles over your skin,

avoiding the eye area. Rinse

off with warm water and pat

dry. This mask can be done

twice weekly. ―The oatmeal in

this scrub exfoliates, while

the honey and olive oil

moisturize.

Cleanse: “Believe it or not,

I love to cleanse with oil,‖ . For

this facial, combine 1 Tbsp plain

Greek yogurt with 2 tsp olive oil

and 1/2 tsp lemon oil (not to be

confused with lemon juice; lemon

oil is an essential oil that can be

found at health food stores). The

mixture should be a little bit runny

but not easily poured out.

Massage it over skin, then

immediately wipe it off with a

washcloth soaked in tepid water.

This can be done daily. ―You want

to use good-quality oil and you‘ll

be surprised at how clean your

skin will feel,

GHOSTS and ghoulies and all manner of scary creatures

of the night will be climbing out the woodwork and roaming

the streets this weekend.

For it is Halloween, and many Joburgers will don their

scariest, most gruesome costumes and go trick or treating

through their neighbourhoods. Halloween is one of the

Western world's oldest holidays. Celebrated on 31 October

by millions of people, it involves fancy and scary costumes,

cut out pumpkins, witches, ghosts and trick or treating with

loads of sweets.

Walking Joburg's streets may not be everyone's cup of tea,

and safe events have been planned where children can go

trick or treating with their friends, under the watchful eye of

their parents.

Joburg Zoo

One of the best Halloween evenings is the annual

Howlo'ween at the Johannesburg Zoo. But this year it will

be a very different event, says Letta Madlala, the zoo's

brand and communication manager.

There will be more activities, which have been co-

ordinated and include a route map for guests; and there

will be a costume competition.

But the American tradition of trick-or-treating and scary

costumes will still be the name of the game. Visitors will be

handed maps and ushers - dressed for Halloween- will be

on-hand to help. And then the fun begins, with visitors able

to make their own way to various locations at the zoo

especially staged for the evening.

There will be a mock operation on the gorilla platform

theatre, where gruesome procedures will be conducted by

the in-house veterinary crew; watch out for the wheelchair-

bound skeleton. Tyrpanophobia, a fear of medical

procedures, is a common terror.

Across in the Ape House, there will be a dark and spooky

vampire cave, complete with scary sound effects, smoke

and unpredictable water spray. Beware the strange things

reaching out to grab you - and the lurking vampire.

Children under the age of nine will not be allowed to enter

the cave.

Under the hot African sun, white rhinos take cover

by lying in the shade. Rhinos are also wallowers.

They find a suitable water hole and roll in its mud,

coating their skin with a natural bug repellent and

sunblock.

Rhinos have sharp hearing and a keen sense of

smell. They may find one another by following the

trail of scent each enormous animal leaves behind it

on the landscape.

White rhinos have two horns, the foremost more

prominent than the other. Rhino horns grow as

much as three inches (eight centimeters) a year,

and have been known to grow up to five feet (1.5

meters) long. Females use their horns to protect

their young, while males use them to battle

attackers.

The prominent horn for which rhinos are so well

known has been their downfall. Many animals have

been killed for this hard, hair-like growth, which is

revered for medicinal use in China, Taiwan, Hong

Kong, and Singapore. The horn is also valued in

North Africa and the Middle East as an ornamental

dagger handle.

The white rhino once roamed much of sub-Saharan

Africa, but today is on the verge of extinction due to

poaching fueled by these commercial uses. Only

about 11,000 white rhinos survive in the wild, and

many organizations are working to protect this much

loved animal

Both black and white rhinoceroses are actually gray.

They are different not in color but in lip shape. The black

rhino has a pointed upper lip, while its white relative has

a squared lip. The difference in lip shape is related to

the animals' diets. Black rhinos are browsers that get

most of their sustenance from eating trees and bushes.

They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the

branches. White rhinos graze on grasses, walking with

their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the

ground.

White rhinos live on Africa's grassy plains, where they

sometimes gather in groups of as many as a dozen

individuals. Females reproduce only every two and a

half to five years. Their single calf does not live on its

own until it is about three years old.

The key priority for the northern white rhino is to secure the

survival of the four remaining animals in DRC, while also

implementing an emergency conservation strategy for the

subspecies.

Although the southern white rhino is faring well, the animals

still face the ever-present threat of poachers.

WWF is working to protect the white rhino and increase

its numbers by:

Expanding existing protected areas and improving their

management

Establishing new protected areas

Improving security monitoring to protect rhinos from poaching

Improving local and international law enforcement to stop the

flow of rhino horn and other illegal wildlife trade items from

Africa to other regions of the world

Promoting well-managed wildlife-based tourism experiences

that will also provide additional funding for conservation

efforts.

How you can help

Don't buy rhino horn products! Illegal trade in rhino horn is

a continuing problem, posing one of the greatest threats to

rhinos today.

Donate towards much-needed anti-poaching equipment and

support for rangers across Africa.

South Africans / Residents of other countries

Donations will go towards:

binoculars

Radios

night-vision gear

bullet-proof armour

rhino tracking

camping equipment

training for guards

All money received will go towards rhino conservation.

Current population & distribution Just 4 northern white rhinos now remain in the wild, in Garamba National Park in north-eastern DRC. However, there are unconfirmed reports of a few survivors in southern Sudan. After more than a century of protection, southern white rhinos currently number about 20,140. Classified as Near Threatened, they are the only non-endangered rhinos. The majority (98.8%) of white rhinos occur in just four countries: South Africa,

Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Kenya.

Four Seasons continues to expand its presence in Africa, signing a long term management

agreement with the owners of The Westcliff hotel in Johannesburg, South Africa. The iconic

property, set on a cliffside garden estate in the northern suburbs of Johannesburg, was closed on

June 30, 2013 to undergo significant enhancements including renovations and new construction

and will reopen as Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff Johannesburg in the second quarter of 2014.

"Africa's economic growth, improved stability and ease of travel have made the continent

increasingly attractive to luxury travellers and Four Seasons," says Scott Woroch, executive vice

president worldwide development for Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.

"Having a property in Johannesburg – the gateway to the whole of southern Africa - is essential as

we explore opportunities for growth in South Africa, and across the continent," continues

Woroch. "With our recently established development office in Dubai, we plan to be much more

active in Africa, pursuing both new build developments and conversion opportunities such as The

Westcliff in Johannesburg and Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, which opened last year."

An expanded outdoor terrace will be a focal point of the Hotel's dining experience, offering

stunning vistas of the city's dense tree canopy and the distant Magaliesberg hills, with sunset

views that are unparalleled in Johannesburg. The Hotel will also include a brand new spa, fitness

centre and outdoor pool featuring world-class amenities. Between the new food and beverage

offerings, and outstanding new spa and fitness facilities, Four Seasons Hotel Westcliff

Johannesburg expects to become the first choice for travellers visiting Johannesburg, as well as a

social hub for local clientele.

Survey the Yard

Make note of tree limbs that should be removed

or cabled, especially those that overhang

structures. Hire an arborist to maintain large

trees.Cut down last year's perennial foliage, and

toss it into the compost pile. Rake mulch from

beds planted with bulbs before foliage appears,

and refresh mulch in other planting areas after

soil warms. Check fences, steps, and pathways

for disrepair caused by freezing and thawing.

Prune Trees and Shrubs

Remove dead, damaged, and diseased

branches from woody plants. Thin and trim

summer-blooming shrubs such as butterfly

bush, hydrangea, and most roses, except

for old-fashioned once bloomers. Prune

cold-damaged wood after plants resume

spring growth. Prune spring-blooming

shrubs and trees after flowering.

Clean Bird Feeders and Baths

Disinfect the feeders by scrubbing with weak bleach

solution (1/4 cup bleach: 2 gallons warm water). Rinse and

dry the feeders thoroughly before refilling them.Scrub

birdbaths with bleach solution, then rinse them thoroughly

and refill, changing water weekly. Clean birdbaths and

feeders regularly throughout the season.

Plant

Plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and perennials

such as hostas and daylilies by early spring.

Choose a cool, cloudy day if possible. Transplant

container-grown plants anytime during the

growing season except midsummer; be sure to

water them thoroughly. Sow seeds of cool-season

flowers like sweet peas, poppies, and calendula, and vegetables such as lettuce, parsley, and spinach.

Fertilize

Apply balanced fertilizer (6-6-6 or 8-8-8), fish emulsion, or

other soil amendments recommended by soil-test results

around trees and shrubs when new growth appears.

Spread high-acid fertilizer and pine-needle mulch around

acid-loving shrubs like azaleas and camellias. Begin

fertilizing perennials when active growth resumes.

Mauritius, so far away, yet so much at

home...

Mauritius, a sparkling crystal in the turquoise

waters of the Indian Ocean, will fascinate

you. The contrast of colours, cultures and

tastes makes the island so charming that the

scene is set for an unforgettable holiday.

Here, you have the opportunity to

experience unparalleled luxury: a level of

refinement that is head and shoulders above

that on offer in other tropical holiday

destinations. Here, you will discover the true

meaning of ‗beauty‘ – a realisation that will

compel you to return to Mauritius‘ shores

time and again. Mauritius was named after

Dutch Prince Maurice Van Nassau...

Port Louis , the capital of Mauritius, was

founded by the French governor and colonist

Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais

in 1735.

Situated on the north-west coast, Port Louis

is the business and administrative capital of

Mauritius. Packed with office-workers during

the day, it quickly quietens down after office-

hours – allowing visitors to enjoy a night out

along the famous Caudan Waterfront.

Those arriving during daylight hours should

head for the bustling Central Market or

Champ de Mars: the oldest racecourse in

the Indian Ocean region.
