  • October 30, 2016, Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time, Priesthood Sunday

Dear Parishioners: What a wonderful weekend we enjoyed last week at our FunFest. The Lord delivered beautiful weather with the sun and breeze — the food booths had delicious food [I tried most of them]; squeals of laughter and excitement filled the campus. A thousand thank yous for all our volunteers and leaders. We will publish a list of the many who helped make this day a success. I saw many new and familiar faces over the weekend. Thank you to all who came to FunFest and helped make it a success. We will publish the financial results in a week or two. We want to make sure we get all our expenses paid so we will have an accurate report. Once again, Thanks to all.

************************* Last week I mentioned the canonization of St. José Sánchez del Río from Mexico. As a young boy, he joined the Cristeros movement and was executed for the faith at 14 years old. His captors peeled the skin off his feet and made him walk to his execution. It seems there is no limit to peoples’ ability to be cruel. St. José stands out to us as a hero of the faith and an outstanding example of faith-filled courage for all youth. There are things worth dying for no matter your age. This week we celebrate All Saints and All Souls days to recognize the many “saints” who have not made public history. Perhaps you have known the saintly grandfather or mother; a neighbor who labored for the poor; the St. Vincent de Paul Society volunteers whose service to others witnessed to much love; a religious sister who taught generations of children and helped prepare them for First Communion; a priest who came in the middle of the night to anoint a dying relative; etc. Those are part of the “great cloud of witnesses” surrounding us in love as they hold us up before God our Father (cf. Hebrews 12:1). They enjoy the beatific vision and enjoy the magnificent fulfillment of the vision. All Saints is a holy day of obligation. Be sure to check our holy day schedule in the bulletin and online — www.svdp-houston.org. We also celebrate All Souls Day and pray for those suffering in Purgatory. Always remember that Purgatory is a part of heaven. The Holy Souls in that state are assured they will be in the fullness of heaven once their suffering has paid the debt of sin. For example, if I steal $5.00 from you and you forgive me, I still owe you $5.00. This doctrine originates from the Scriptures and Church Tradition; “Thus [Judas Maccabeus] made atonement for the dead that they might be absolved from their sin” (2 Mac 12:46). From our earliest days, our Church has offered prayers for the dead. St. John Chrysostom (d. 407) wrote — Let us help and commemorate them. If Job's sons were purified by their father's sacrifice, why would we doubt that our offerings for the dead bring them some consolation? Let us not hesitate to help those who have died and to offer our prayers for them. All Souls days, IS NOT A HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION. It is a Holy Day but the Church does not require our attendance at Holy Mass. One of the principle differences between Purgatory and Hell is the virtue of HOPE. Souls in purgatory are able to endure their sufferings because they know the fullness of the vision will soon be their reward. They are not angry in their suffering because they know they earned it because of the sins committed. Our prayers for them help them reach the fullness of heaven “sooner” rather than later. Our sacrifices and prayers help lessen a soul’s time in Purgatory. They will not forget those who helped them. They will intercede with our Father in heaven when they join that great cloud of witnesses. May these two days inspire you and give the great hope of knowing God is with you in every situation calling you to great holiness that you too will find the fullness of the vision — in the end, it’s really all that matters.

    Pax et bonum, Msgr. Bill

    Is Priesthood Sunday

This is the day set aside this year to celebrate and

extend our thanks and prayers to the priests who

serve our Archdiocese in so many ways. We invite

you to give the priests you know a simple thank

you on this day, or offer a spiritual bouquet (the

offering of prayers such as Rosaries, Masses or

Holy Hours). Spiritual bouquet cards will be

located in the pews. Please take one, complete it,

and return it to the parish office, or place it in the

offertory basket at mass. Please pray for vocations

and for priests on this day!

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

“It is better to go beyond the limits of charity than to fail in it.” – Saint Vincent de Paul

We came to the family’s meager apartment, to respond to a request to provide a dining table and chairs to

replace the broken table retrieved from a dumpster. We found little furniture, most of which was obtained

from a dumpster. The living room couch doubled as a bed and the lamp did not work. Upon realizing that we would

provide a table, chairs and furniture to replace what we were sitting upon, the mother began to weep. We asked what

more we could do. She said that she and her husband and a very young daughter slept on mattresses on the bedroom

floor. We observed that the mattresses were in a condition unfit to sleep upon.

The mother works as a dishwasher at a Houston hospital and her husband struggles to stay employed. Her eight year old

daughter’s birthday went un-celebrated last week (the mother told us that her daughter pleaded with her to understand

that all was well). Her son withdrew from his Fall semester of classes because he was unable to pay the $300 tuition

expense. Her son is now working a part-time job to pay for next semester’s tuition. The mother is taking English clas-

ses and studying to obtain her US citizenship next year.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. A $1,000.00 parishioner donation to our Conference was received ten minutes be-

fore leaving for our home visit, thus easing our budget guidelines. We were able to order economical new beds and

used furniture from the Vincentian warehouse for this family.

Throughout the home visit, the mother gently smiled and never once asked for anything, other than the dining table. All

additional offers for assistance came from our inquiries and observations about what more that we could do for her family.

The closing prayer took place in English and Spanish, simultaneously. As we thanked God for the honor to be with her

that afternoon and for strength to continue to care for her family, she prayed the following: “Thank you, Jesus, for the

gifts coming to me today. Thank you for bringing me friends to help me. Please bless my friends for having shown

mercy on me, and please bless all those whom they will continue to serve. Please let me be able to help others some-

day, as they have helped me. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus. Amen.”

The Vincentian home visit is the core of our ministry. The visit is more than the validation of need. The visit is to share

time and establish a relationship with people in need. We pray and feel God’s presence.

Our SVdP Parish Conference extends humble and heartfelt gratitude to Monsignor Bill and the parishioners of our

Church, for your overwhelming charity in helping us care for Jesus in the suffering and in the poor. Your prayers for,

and donation checks made out to our SVdP Parish Conference are greatly needed and humbly appreciated. For infor-

mation on joining us in our mission of holiness and charity, please call and leave a message at 713-664-5350.

Leviticus 25:35 - "And if your brother becomes poor, and cannot maintain himself with you, you shall maintain him; as

a stranger and a sojourner he shall live with you."

    comenzó a murmurar y a quejarse!

    Lecturas de hoy: Sabiduría 11:22 — 12:2; Salmo 145:1–2, 8–11, 13, 14; 2 Tesalonicenses 1:11 — 2:2;

—Fray Gilberto Cavazos-Glz, OFM, Copyright © J.
