Readings

Sirach 35:12-14, 16-18 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18 Luke 18:9-14

Gospel

Jesus addressed this parable to those who were convinced of their own righteousness and despised everyone else. “Two people went up to the temple area to pray; one was a Pharisee and the other was a tax collector. The Pharisee took up his position and spoke this prayer to himself, ‘O God, I thank you that I am not like the rest of humanity - greedy, dishonest, adulterous - or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week, and I pay tithes on my whole income.’ But the tax collector stood off at a distance and would not even raise his eyes to heaven but beat his breast and prayed, ‘O God, be merciful to me a sinner.’ I tell you, the latter went home justified, not the former; for whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

The gospel reading has one true meaning: BE RIGHT WITH GOD. 1. Do you think of yourself as a righteous person (Pharisee)

or as a sinner (Tax Collector)? Can we be both at different times within our lives?

2. Do you think there are any benefits in the prayer that the tax collector prayed? How about the Pharisee’s prayer?

3. How can we become more and more like the tax collector? Can you see the answer in the Gospel, can you find it in your heart?

4. Where is faith in your life now? Is it a strong faith, or weak? What are you doing with the level of your faith? Are you raising it to a higher level? How?

We all sin, but we must ask for forgiveness no

matter who we are.

Books, CDs and Care Notes

Are you looking for an inspirational CD or book? The Lighthouse rack

located in the Narthex is filled with many options.

On the rack next to the books and CDs you’ll find a variety of “Care Notes”

which cover nearly every occasion. There is no charge for the notes. Example

topics include:

All Saints' Day is a Holy Day of Obligation celebrated annually on November 1. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven.

It should not be confused with All Souls' Day (observed on November 2) and is dedicated to those who have died and not yet reached heaven. All Souls Day is not a Holy Day of Obligation.

ALL SOULS DAY NOVENA

To all of the St. Mark volunteers and generous donors...

A Prayer for Priests

O Jesus, Eternal Priest, keep all Thy priests within the shelter of Thy Sacred Heart, where none may harm them. Keep unstained their anointed

hands which daily touch Thy Sacred Body. Keep unsullied their lips purpled with Thy Precious Blood. Keep pure and unearthly their hearts, sealed with the sublime marks of Thy glorious priesthood.

Let Thy holy love surround them and shield them from the world’s contagion. Bless their labors with abundant fruit and may the souls to whom they have ministered be here below their joy and consolation and in Heaven their beautiful and everlasting crown. Amen.

O Mary, Queen of the clergy, pray for us; obtain for us a number of holy priests.

Are you called

to be a Deacon? The call to the diaconate is a call to a vocation of service of

Liturgy, Word and Charity.

This call does not come to the individual alone, or for his own sake. It is not a right, but rather it is a call, affirmed and recognized by the Church in testimony of the man who is living a life of service to God, family, parish, and community.

The Diocese of Orlando Office of the Permanent Diaconate is calling on the Church community to bring forth reputable men, servants, filled with the Spirit, to discern a call to the permanent diaconate.

To begin your discernment, review and answer the questions below.

1. Am I at least 25 years of age (30 if married) and NOT older than 59 at the beginning of the discernment year? (Discernment Cycle begins August 2020.)

2. Am I a fully initiated Catholic(s) for at least 5 years? If married, is my wife also fully initiated?

3. If married, have my wife and I been in a Sacramental Marriage for at least 5 years?

4. If single, widowed, or divorced, have I lived a celibate lifestyle for at least 5 years?

5. Have I (and my wife, if married) resided in the Diocese of Orlando for the last 5 years and have no intention to move for at least 5 years should I be ordained a Deacon?

Men and their wives from St. Mark seeking to discern this call to the Diaconate are encouraged to attend the below scheduled Discernment Night.

Nov. 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM at St. Timothy,

1351 Paige Pl., Lady Lake

For more information and to register for the Discernment Night contact:

Deacon John Rumplasch at 352/350-2430 (cell) or

St. Mark Ministry to the Sick and Homebound

Please consider joining St. Mark Ministry to the Sick and

Homebound. Our ministry makes approximately 300 visits to

sick and homebound Catholics each week. Our fellow

parishioners depend on us. In Matthew 25: 36, 40 we read:

I was sick and you visited me…Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.

We will have another Ministry to the Sick and Homebound Training Class on October 28 at 9:00 AM in Room A of the Saint Sebastian Enrichment Center. This class is for anyone who is currently an Extraordinary Minister and would like to

advance further as a Minister to the Sick and Homebound.

For more details contact Kevin Coffey, 352/561-2828.

From the Office of Fr. Rafal

If you know of a parishioner who would like to receive communion, but is ill and unable to attend Mass, please contact the Ministry of the Sick. If you have difficulty reaching this ministry, contact the Parish Office for assistance.

An Important Notice To All Parishioners

There have been occasions when individuals move around the Church grounds asking for help.

While we as Christ’s followers want to assist those in need, we ask that you please refrain from giving cash to anyone who is loitering on the Parish grounds.

Our ushers have information they can give these people to assist them in getting food or financial assistance.

We do not want to encourage those who are just looking for a handout and not in real need of assistance to look upon St. Mark as an “easy target.”

Anyone truly in need will be able to receive help from SVdP or St. Theresa’s.

Halloween is a holiday loved by old and young. Why not learn the roots of this holiday by attending a solo performance that traces the Celtic origins of Halloween and explains its historic transformation into a Christian Feast as well as its introduction into the United States by Irish Immigrants during the 19th Century.

You’ll be treated to a highly entertaining and informative solo performance by Greg Sean Canning, immediate past Florida State President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. While in costume he will enlighten you as he presents all the details of this transformation.

A voluntary donation for Hibernian Charities is suggested.

MENTORS NEEDED FOR CHILDREN OF THE FOREST

Did you know that SOZO KIDS runs an after school program? For more than a year, the needy children of the Ocala National Forest have been serviced at a Mentoring Center. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul provides regular snacks and drinks for the children in this program

which continues to grow! 85 children are using the Center 3X a week. Isn’t it great that these children have a place to go after school? Would you

consider giving a few hours per week or even per month to mentor these children with reading, writing or arts and crafts? Mentoring requires no training or prior experience! The Center operates Monday thru Wednesday from 2:30 until 5:30 PM. Choose a day that works for you – once a week – or even less! Any help you offer is greatly appreciated. It’s an experience you won’t soon forget!

Details are available in a brochure at our St. Vincent de Paul Office which is open

Monday through Thursday – 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM or call 352/245-4700.

The children will thank you for your time and dedication!

International Mass DVDs are here!

Whether you attended the International Mass and would like a permanent souvenir … or you weren’t able to attend and want to experience it now, St. Mark is offering a DVD video from this special Mass. The multi-cultural Mass included languages from many countries, flags from multiple nations, and songs honoring the heritages of many of our parishioners. The DVDs are available in the Parish Office. A Free Will donation will benefit the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Come and get your copy today!
