Community News - Bruce Devillier

This year is flying! Happy October! I am looking forward to it with all of its glorious fall weather and beautiful colors that are around the corner. What a wonderful time of year. Let me encourage everyone to get out and enjoy all of the traditional autumn activities.

Having correct information going out to the community is so important. We are starting a new alert system for the community with TechRadium, Inc. called IRIS (Immediate Response Information System) in approximately the next 60 days. This system will send a voice message, text, and email simultaneously to our Property Owners. We will be using this system for major emergencies only at this time. Our normal email system will continue to be used for normal business. See page 6 of this Echoes for more information on signing up for this new system. All information we currently have on file will be input into the system. Any new information submitted on the form on page 6 will automatically replace the information currently on file with the HAWL Office and Front Main Gate. This includes registered phone numbers used to call in guests. Any email information submitted will not affect information on file for online ACH bill payments. Please ensure the Office has up-to-date contact information on file in order to receive correct information about what’s going on in the community. I encourage everyone to read the monthly Echoes, keep current with our website (hawlms.com), and if you have not previously signed up for our email newsletter, please do so. In order to sign up for the weekly email newsletter, please do so through the HAWL website. Select the “Newsletter” link on the home page and follow the instructions given. Please remember to confirm your subscription through the email link you will receive after registering. This is a service to provide up-to-date important information and fun activities directly to your email account. Currently we have only 751 subscriptions registered for this service, which is slightly more than half of our community. Please call or come by the Office so that the staff can assist you in signing up for the email newsletter. This office does not monitor or manage any social media sites. Though I like social media platforms for helpful items between neighbors such as missing pets, contractor information, and fun activities, those sites are not constructive for concerns or problems. Please contact my office directly on any issues, as they will be handled in a more efficient and timely manner.

We have had and are still in the midst of a very active hurricane season. Thankfully we have dodged the majority of this year’s storms. It is my prayer that the season stops, but while it is still fresh in everyone’s minds, I want to go over storm mode preparation that the HAWL staff follows along with procedures for homeowners. For HAWL staff: Ɣ Lake valves are opened. Ɣ When the Office is closed, the Security Main Gate should be contacted in the

appropriate situations. Pending power and internet service, communication will be conducted through email and the alert system once it is operational. Otherwise, all communication will be conducted through the Security Main Gate as it will be the communication center for both Property Owners and staff through a communication folder. Ɣ Generators at Well #3, Well #4, and the Front Main Gate are ready. Ɣ We have a contractor on standby if needed for helping clear the roadway. For property owners: Ɣ Sand and sand bags will be available behind the firehouse. Ɣ Ensure that your culvert/drainage system around your property is clear of debris. Ɣ Secure all items which could become projectiles. ƔBoats on the lake and on land must be secured.

I want to remind everyone that during the aftermath of Katrina, it all took all property owners, staff, and contractors to get HAWL functional. Most importantly, remember to help your neighbors.

Please remember, during power outages to conserve the amount of water used. This will help our water system to have a water supply as well as your grinder waste water tank, which holds 145 gallons of waste water. If power is out for a long period of time, you can pump down the grinder tank by plugging into the plug on the side of the control panel. The female plug that you will need is a “NEMA L1430R”. You will only need to plug into the control panel for five minutes to pump down and then unplug. This process has been advised since the sewer system was installed in 2009. It is very important to have a plan to pump down. The Pearl River County Utility Authority procedures say that they will assist anyone that can not do this, but honestly speaking, you and I know that in a major event, it will be very difficult to receive their assistance as they will be managing repairs and issues throughout their service area. I am asking anyone that does not have a plan to pump down either by yourself or with the help of neighbor to call the HAWL Office now so we can make a list of those who need assistance so that the PRCUA can follow up during a crisis.

On some new business, we have hired VIF, LLC. to install vinyl bulkheads of 150 feet at the Lodge and tennis courts area and 86 feet at the West Marina by the boat launch. We are also adding ten additional boat slips at the West Marina for property owners to rent. This has been a major request for many years. This will enhance these areas as well as prevent erosion. The total capital improvement cost will be $53,304.00. The contractor is planning to begin construction this month.

I would like to thank all of the property owners that have come to show support for and learn information about your community by attending “Coffee with the General Manager”. These meetings are the perfect opportunity to have a conversation regarding community information directly from the General Manager as well as to get to know each other. The next “Coffee with the General Manager” meeting is scheduled for November 13, 2020, at 9:30 am in the Lakeview Room of the Lodge while practicing social distancing. Masks will be provided should anyone need one. Topics to be addressed depend on the questions brought forward from Property Owners. In addition to these meetings, my door is always open to you. I encourage your suggestions and/or concerns regarding the improvement of the community. Community members working together is essential to protect, maintain, enhance, and preserve not only the community but your home as well.

Community Safety Begins with You October 2020 Page 8

Trick-or-treating will be held on October 31st, regardless of weather. HAWL does not have

designated times for trick-or-treating; however, dusk until 8:30 pm is generally acceptable. Tractors with functioning headlights are allowed; ATVS and side-by-sides are not allowed, even with working headlights. Stopping in the middle of the road is

prohibited. When stopping, vehicles must pull over in order to prevent a roadblock. Roads must

remain open to traffic at all times.

Please Remind Trick-or-Treaters: · Stay in a group and communicate where they

will be going. · Carry a cell phone for communication. · Notify law enforcement immediately of any

suspicious or unlawful activity. · Remain on well-lit streets and always walk at

the far edge of the roadway facing traffic. Never cut across yards or use alleys.

· Don't assume the right-of-way. Drivers may not see Trick-or-Treaters. Just because one car stops, doesn't mean others will!

· Only cross the street as a group in established crosswalks, never between driveways or parked cars.

HAWL is full of wildlife such as raccoons, foxes, coyotes, deer, geese, feral cats, hogs, etc. Feeding wildlife is harmful to the animals' health, but also

unsafe for you since wild animals become dangerous after they are fed. We have received reports of wild

animal sightings. If you feed your pet outdoors, remove any leftover food. Avoid letting smaller or

older pets outdoors at night, dusk, and dawn. (Larger pets are less likely to be a target.) These are the most active hunting times for most predators. Feeding the wildlife attracts other wildlife. Bird feeders attract birds and they also attract squirrels, rabbits, rats,

and mice. All are the main diet of the fox and coyote. If you spot a wild animal, do not allow it to become

overly confident. Find a way to keep it moving. Use a car horn, air horn, noisemaker, shouting, or anything to keep the animal moving. Make a note of the time, location, and how often you

spot the animal. It will help if the animal has to be removed.

Picking up after your pet is not only the neighborly thing to do but it can also

promote a healthier environment since pet waste can transmit diseases. When

walking your pet in the community, please ensure that you have the necessary supplies to clean up after

your pet. Take advantage of the pet waste stations placed in the community at the following locations: the walking path on the dam and both the East and

West playgrounds.

Saturday, October 10, 2020 Dusk (October 9th) -12:00 pm (October 10th) Hooray! It’s that time of year again! The Fall Rodeo will begin at dusk October 9th and end at noon October 10th.

This is to provide a chance for families to enjoy fishing in the dark prior to bedtime. Pick up a map of fishing habitat locations from the Lodge, the HAWL website, or the East Marina Pavilion (while the scales are open) to locate some great fishing spots. Underwater structures (fish habitats) have been placed to attract bait fish and game fish. Four areas are located within casting distance: (50 feet) of the dam, both marinas, and other offshore

locations around the lake. Weigh-in activities will be located at the East Marina Pavilion by the Lodge. The scales open at 9:00 am and close promptly at noon. Awards will be presented at 12:30 pm. There will be only one weigh-in per fisherman; all fish must be caught by hook and line. As in the past, there will be four fish categories (bass, bream/bluegill, crappie, and catfish) and three age groups (10 & under, 11 – 14, and 15 & older.) 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place prizes for the largest total weight of fish will be awarded to each age group in each fish category. Two separate trophies open to all age groups will be presented for Largest Bass and Largest Total Weight of Grass

Carp. (See block below for more information regarding the trophy for Largest Total Weight of Grass Carp.) There is no need to register for this FREE Rodeo. The Lake Quality Committee encourages participants to help collect litter or debris they may see while fishing to help maintain the beauty of the lake. For more information, call the

Office at 601-798-1484. Attention: No skiing or tubing will be allowed on the lake during the fishing rodeo.

Ever wonder how to find all those spots where habitats have been placed in the lake to improve fishing? There’s

an easy answer! Do you have a GPS app on your cell phone? If not, download a free app, input the GPS

coordinates from the Hide-A-Way Lake Fish Habitat Locations Map (available in the Office or

hawlms.com), and then you can go directly to the habitat locations. Next, fish the day away!

The walking path on the dam/spillway is an ideal place to walk or jog as it provides breathtaking views of the

lake. While these types of activities are encouraged, it is also important to keep safety in mind. Anyone walking,

jogging, and/or biking should wear bright or reflective clothing to ensure they are visible to drivers. Bicyclists should also wear helmets. According to the rules of the

road, walkers and joggers must walk or jog on the edge of the street facing traffic. When traffic

approaches they should move off the street in order not to impede the flow of traffic. Bike riders must ride with the flow of and yield to traffic and must observe the same rules of the road as motorists. Bicycles are not

allowed on the dam/spillway and on private lots. Additionally, it is also the

responsibility of drivers to watch out for these individuals. As a driver, it is

vital to remain undistracted while driving (i.e. no texting, speeding, etc.)

in order to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
