Active Minds Presentation| Germany| In
OWN Room Monday October 5th @
3:00pm Channel 1-2
Germany is the most populous country in the
European Union and is the EU’s Largest econo-
my. Since the debt crisis of 2008, Germany has
taken on a dominant position as a de facto lead-
er of the EU. Now, with long-term Chancellor An-
gela Merkel not seeking re-election and the Eu’s
second largest economy (the UK) on its way out
the door, Germany is at a crossroads. These cir-
cumstances, combined with a resurgent German
far-right and the Coronavirus pandemic, place
Germany in uncertain territory. Join Active
Minds as we discuss Germany’s tumultuous his-
tory and nebulous future.
Active Minds Presentation| Pirates: Tales
& Legends| In Own Room Channel 1-2
Monday October 19th @ 3:00pm
Pirates occupy a unique place in the popular im-
agination and have been an integral part of glob-
al history for centuries. From the swashbuckling
privateers of the Golden Age of Piracy to mod-
ern day pirates plying the waters off the coast of
Africa, pirates are a captivating class of criminal
and antihero. Sail with us on the seven seas as
Active Minds discusses the history, personali-
ties, and tales of the pirates.
“The spirit never ages. It stays forever young.”
“Almost all my middle-aged and elderly acquaintances, including me, feel about 25 — unless we haven’t had our coffee,
in which case we feel 107”.
“Youth is the gift of nature, but age is a work of art.”
“The longer I live, the more beautiful life
becomes.”
“Old age is like everything else. To make a success of it, you’ve got to start
young.”
Beth will be doing Church services from her
home to share with you in your home!

service, (reading a short passage) please

For this month’s spotlight, I thought it would be fun to focus on one of Cherrywood Pointe’s new resi-
dents, Joan Y. Joan was born and raised in Faribault Minnesota in Rice County. She went to Faribault
Highschool and attended St. Olaf College where she graduated with an English major. Joan was mar-
ried to a fine gentlemen named John. John also attended Faribault high school and was 3 years older
then Joan. John thrived in sports while attending Faribault high school and was a great basketball
player. John then entered the service, and when he returned, he went to school at the University of
Minnesota and graduated as a civil engineer. Joan was singing in their local church with the church
choir at this time, and that would be when Joan and John officially met. Joan and Johns parents also
happened to be friends through the church. John first approached Joan and asked her on their first
date. John asked Joan if she would like to go to the cinema or go fishing, and since Joan had never
been fishing before, she thought that would be much more enjoyable then the cinema. Together, Joan
and John had 4 kids, 2 boys and 2 girls. Johns job often required traveling from state to state as he
worked on different major highway construction projects. Joan and John spent much of their time in
Indiana and Ohio. As the kids got older, Joan and John moved back to Minnesota and lived in Min-
netonka. John continued to work and Joan worked as a substitute teacher while being a stay at home
mom. Joan has been apart of many different organizations, one being the league of women voters
and another one being the AAUW House in St. Paul. Joan also enjoys reading, book clubs, playing
bridge, going for walks, eating food and socializing, just to name a few. Joan thus far has been very
