DAPS is always excited about taking part in this event that has broadened the culture of giving in North Texas. It shouldn’t be surprising what Texans can do when they set their minds to it. This year, in an “18-hour giving extravaganza," over $50 million was raised to help local nonprofits. In this year’s NTGD, DAPS members, families, and friends gave over $15,000. That is cause for DAPS to celebrate! It really is amazing all that DAPS is doing and the difference that we are making in the lives of so many. We couldn’t do it without YOU. KEEP MOVING! Symposium I hope you were among the 280 people that joined us on September 21 for DAPS' Third Annual KEEP MOVING! Symposium. What a success! The event brought to mind the movie, Field of Dreams. If you saw that movie, you may recall Shoeless Joe Jackson saying, “If you build it, he will come.” Not long ago, an annual symposium was just a dream. Well, we’ve “built it,” and people are coming. People came to this year’s symposium from as far away as Granbury (about 75 miles). It is always thrilling to see good numbers in attendance. More importantly, the symposium is helping us to fulfill our mission—DAPS is dedicated to impacting and improving the lives of those affected by Parkinson’s disease. Our new venue was wonderful. The feedback about the presenters, presentations, and breakout sessions was great. The sponsors and the increased number of exhibitors gave those in attendance a chance to learn firsthand about services and resources that are available in the Dallas area. Community Day is a cornerstone event between DAPS and Vizient. DAPS is honored to be chosen as one of the nonprofit charities to host Vizient Community Day. DAPS attendees will join volunteers from Vizient for Parkinson's awareness. Attendees will be paired up with a Vizient employee. That team will spend the day together as partners going through all the exhibits. Our objective is to get to know each other, learn about Parkinson's, and experience the classes that DAPS offers. Boxed lunches will be served.

In late 2018, Tribe Wellness developed PEAK Performers (PP). The need came out of analysis of the group programs at Tribe Wellness. Tribe Wellness

was determined to find a way to get people with PD to walk and work on their walking mechanics with greater consistency. The importance of specific training as a key principle of neuroplasticity, along with the difficulty PD patients have walking, led to the birth of PEAK Performers. Founder of Tribe Wellness and PEAK Performers, Mike Braitsch notes, “We ‘climb new heights’ for Parkinson's by training through a combination of structured solo practice along with regular group hikes.”

The goals of PEAK Performers are:

1. raise awareness about PD2. create specific long-term goals for PP 3. raise money for Parkinson's-related

organizations4. show people that a diagnosis is not a death

sentence5. practice and demonstrate the value of exercise

In just one year, PEAK Performers has completed two hikes. In the fall of 2018, PP climbed the highest peak in Texas (Guadalupe Peak) as a fundraiser for DAPS. The second was held in conjunction with the Davis Phinney Foundation's Victory Summit Austin event, which involved a hike around Ladybird Lake in downtown Austin just before the conference. Proceeds from the Austin hike were donated to keep the Every Victory Counts manual in print as it is an excellent resource for people with PD.

To read the complete story on PEAK Performers’ hike in Austin, follow this link: https://www.davisphinneyfoundation.org/blog/the-holy-grail-of-living-well-with-parkinsons/

Get to Know:Erika ArvizuDAPS Instructor

Erika has worked as a DAPS instructor at the Plano location for almost 20 years. Her interest in the medical field was peaked when her grandmother was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, leaving her family at a loss as to how they could help.

As an Occupational Therapist for 25 years, Erika has specialized in neurology and orthopedics. Her philosophy, “movement is medicine,” is evident through her focus on flexibility, stretching, coordination, balance and strength. While leading and instructing exercise classes, Erika aims to educate attendees on the importance of specific exercises and how they can help with everyday scenarios. Erika’s relationship with the DAPS group members has grown through both laughter and tears, leaving her inspired by those that she helps.

When she’s not instructing a DAPS class, Erika can be found working as an Occupational Therapist at Methodist Richardson Medical Center or cheering on her two kids, with her husband of 20 years.

There are millions of people that live with Parkinson’s disease but cannot work because of the symptoms of Parkinson’s. If you have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and you cannot work, you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Because Parkinson’s is a progressive disease that isn’t reversible, people who have Parkinson’s can file a claim for disability benefits. The only requirement that you must meet in order to file a claim for benefits is that you expect to be unable to work for at least a year.

Medically Qualifying for Disability Benefits Due to Parkinson’s Disease

There are requirements that you must meet in order to medically qualify for Social Security disability benefits because of Parkinson’s disease. Every medical condition that qualifies for disability benefits is listed in the SSA’s Blue Book.

Each condition has a set of requirements that must be met in order for a person to be approved for benefits because of that condition. The Blue Book listing for Parkinson’s disease states that in order to be approved for disability benefits you must:

• Be unable to control the movement of at least two extremities (either an arm and a leg or two arms or two legs), despite at least three months of treatment. This must result in extreme difficulty in the ability to balance while standing or walking, to stand up from a seated position, or to use the arms.

OR• You must have “marked” physical problems

along with a "marked" limitation in any one of the following:

1. thinking (understanding, remembering, or applying information)

2. interacting with others (social problems), or3. finishing tasks (problems with concentration,

persistence, or speed).

If you can provide medical documentation showing that you meet these requirements, then you should be approved for Social Security disability benefits. However, Parkinson’s can affect people in different ways and at different speeds. You may not meet the listing requirements for Parkinson’s disease but still

be unable to work. In that case you could still qualify for benefits under a Medical Vocational Allowance.

Medical Vocational Allowance and RFC

A Medical Vocational Allowance provides disability benefits to people who don’t technically meet the Blue Book listing for their condition but cannot work because of that condition. When filing a claim for Social Security disability benefits you can ask for a Residual Functional Capacity evaluation. This is done by the SSA to determine if there is any work that you can do in your current condition and with your current skills. If there is no full-time work that you can reasonably be expected to do then your claim for disability benefits can be approved even if you don’t meet the Blue Book listing.

Applying for Social Security Disability Benefits

You can apply for Social Security disability benefits online. If you need help filling out the paperwork for your claim or if you have questions about the application, like how to ask for a Residual Functional Capacity evaluation, the best thing to do is apply in person. Make an appointment with your local SSA office and bring copies of all your medical records and paperwork with you to the appointment. A staff member will help you fill out the application and file it.

Parkinson's Disease Panel Thursday, October 24, 2019 Noon to 2:00 p.m.

HarborChase of Plano 5340 Towne Square Dr. Plano, TX 75024

DAPS continues to make new friends and with new friends come new opportunities. One of those new friends is HarborChase of Plano. We are planning some exciting things with them. On October 24,

there will be a panel discussion about Parkinson’s disease. Among others on the panel are some names that you may recognize: Dr. Mike Braitsch, of Tribe Wellness; Pat and Barry Goukler, DAPS McKinney; and Mike Miles, Executive Director of DAPS. If you are able to join us that day, it will be a great opportunity to support DAPS and the new relationship we have with Harbor Chase while learning more about living an active and fulfilling life with Parkinson’s disease. There will be information and discussions that are beneficial for the person with Parkinson’s as well as care partners and family. Lunch will be provided and it is requested that you RSVP by calling Harbor Chase at (972) 362-1110.
