PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
After a very successful start to the school year, we are now jumping
feet-first into fall!
With the recent reorganization of Ward boundaries in Toronto, the
TDSB has realigned some areas and staff to coincide with these
changes. As such, Andrew Howard has moved to a different area
into the TDSB. Mr. Howard has been a tireless advocate of student
well-being and achievement here at Tom Longboat. We wish him all
the best in his new Learning Network. At this time we would like to
welcome Kerry-Lynn Stadnyk as our new Superintendent for Tom
Longboat and our Learning Network. Ms. Stadnyk is a very
experienced Superintendent who has championed student success
in schools and with families in several regions throughout the TDSB.
We look forward to having her join the Tom Longboat family!
On September 27th, we held our annual Terry Fox run which was our
first community fundraiser for the year. Together we raised $381.30 to
donate toward cancer research. Way to go Tom Longboat!
This month is filled with many exciting opportunities for our students.
The first is our annual cross country run on October 11th at Thomson
Park. Our students have already been practicing several mornings
each week in preparation for the big race.
We also have our annual Move-a-Thon scheduled for October 31st.
This year our goal is to raise $5000 toward purchasing classroom
schoolyard sports equipment, and to replace our broken basketball
hoops and ball hoops outside. Our kick off assembly was held on
October 9th, students will be bringing home pledge forms. A reminder
that students are only to ask family and friends to sponsor them for
the Move-a-Thon. Students are NOT to go door-to-door asking for
sponsorship from strangers. Students will also have the opportunity to
purchase groovy glow-in-the-dark items from our cosmic store on the
day of the Move-a-Thon. Let’s work together to keep our kids moving
both indoors and out!
Sincerely,
Andrea Chisholm
Principal

TERRY FOX RUN
By: Suvan and Deepesh
On Thursday, September 20, the
entire school participated in the
Terry Fox Run. Once the day
arrived, we all knew what was
around the corner, we came
dressed in our best sports gear to
run. We were running to keep
Terry’s legacy, spirit and dream
alive, which we achieved and
collectively we raised $381.30!
In the morning, the kindergartens
walked for about 25 minutes.
Later in the afternoon, the juniors
and primaries had a 1 hour run.
The primaries ran the school’s field
while the juniors ran Horsley Hill’s
field.
We are hoping the next
generation can keep Terry’s
legacy, dream and spirit alive!

ORANGE SHIRT DAY – EVER CHILD MATTERS
Orange Shirt Day is an annual event on September 30th, that started in 2013 to
recognize the legacy of Residential school system for First Nations, Metis and Inuit
families and communities. It is a show of support and understanding of the history of
the school system that impacts many First Nations, Métis and Inuit families today.
The phrase “Every Child Matters” reminds everyone that children are such an
important and integral part of our communities and that they are our future
generations of change makers. By wearing orange, we have an opportunity to bring
awareness to the history of residential schools and to stand up against other injustices
that may impact our children/students. This link gives the story of Phyllis Webstad, who
started the campaign.
