A vacationer hearing about rain in the forecast might alter his plans and a traveler hearing about a planecrash might even take the bus. But will a person who hears they are at risk for heart disease change his orher lifestyle? Surprisingly, no.

A 2016 report in the British Medical Journal analyzed 18 studies and found that even when people wereshown genetic tests indicating increased risk factors for heart disease, they weren't likely to change theirdiet, exercise more, or quit smoking. This finding flies in the face of simple logic saying that a personwould want to act in a way that keeps them alive longer.

Genetic testing, according to The National Institute of Health, has become much more popular andaffordable lately with companies like 23andMe and Sure Genomics offering personal testing for anywherefrom $100 to $2,000. These tests can uncover inherited disorders and genetic risk factors that wouldleave a person predisposed to developing a heart problem. Researchers speculated that testing might leadto informed patients taking prevention into their own hands, but it seems this theory was not correct.

On one hopeful note, knowing their genetic predisposition to disease didn't inspire healthy behavior, butit also didn't inspire new risky behaviors either. Testing didn't make people more or less depressed oranxious.

Experts at the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force concluded that knowledge of risk factors coupled withbehavioral counseling seems to help people take action. A program that has multiple sessions withpatients over several months can help with setting goals to lose the weight and get healthy.

HealthCorner

Eighty-five years ago in October, Babe Ruth pointed to center field and called his shot…Maybe. It was, after all, decades before today when every fan has a cell phone and takes videos ofeverything from fainting goats to drying paint.

For The Called Shot, all we have are recollections and quotes. Neither are conclusive althoughrecollections have it this way:

Oct 1, 1932: In the fifth inning of game three of the World Series, with a count of two balls andtwo strikes, Babe Ruth pointed to the center field bleachers in Chicago’s Wrigley Field and thensmashed a home run high above the very spot to which he had just gestured. The Yankees wenton to sweep the Series with four straight victories.

Now the pitcher, Charlie Root, took exception to the story and said if Ruth had the nerve tomake such a gesture, Root would have made sure the Babe "ended up on his (behind)."

Nearly 10 years later on the set of a movie, Root and Ruth talked about the Called Shot. Ruthsaid he didn't call it, but it made a great story. On the other hand, Ruth's descendants are firmlyin the Called Shot camp.

In 2013, Chicago sportswriter Ed Sherman interviewed Ruth's 96-year-old adopted daughter,Julia Ruth Stevens, who said both her mother and Cardinal Spellman claimed to have seen theCalled Shot. Even two 16-mm films, one discovered in the 1970s and another in 1999, don'tconclusively tell the story. But some say the 1999 film shows Ruth talking smack and pointing

at the Cubs dugout, not center field.

“A Poem” by Robert Burns

While virgin Spring by Eden's flood,Unfolds her tender mantle green,Or pranks the sod in frolic mood,Or tunes Eolian strains between.

While Summer, with a matron grace,Retreats to Dryburgh's cooling shade,Yet oft, delighted, stops to traceThe progress of the spiky blade.

While Autumn, benefactor kind,By Tweed erects his aged head,And sees, with self-approving mind,Each creature on his bounty fed.

While maniac Winter rages o'erThe hills whence classic Yarrow flows,Rousing the turbid torrent's roar,Or sweeping, wild, a waste of snows.

October means that Autumn takes overand Mother Nature treats us to a

glorious sight. The tree’s and otherfoliage’s leaves turn from green to a

dazzling array of colors. Reds, oranges, yellows and browns. Then the leavesfall, revealing the true shape of a tree.

The trunk and all it’s incredible tangle ofbranches. Maybe all this is a bit over the

top but everyone should admire justonce. Mother Nature is here for all ofus. Stay warm and happy watching.

The number one reason personsover the age of 65 experienceinjuries is falling and falls can beespecially disruptive for those wholive alone or in senior communities.

There are many reasons for senior falls. One of biggest reasons is poor balance.Causes of poor balance could be innerear disorders, viral inflammation aroundthe labyrinthine nerve, other nervedisorders, vision problems, diabetes, medications and muscle loss. The lossof muscle mass is also a very commonproblem for older adults. Studies haveshown that older adults who do notexercise, or are very inactive, tend tolose 3 – 5 oz. of muscle mass per year.Regular exercise is one of the mostimportant tools for seniors seeking toavoid injurious falls. Studies have shownthat exercising can increase musclestrength and mass, thus improvingbalance.

The best way for senior communities tohelp their residents prevent falls is tohave a great exercise program. The Live2 B Healthy® program is proven to helpseniors improve both balance andoverall strength. Live 2 B Healthy®
