I’d like to say thank you Williamsburg Garden Club for hosting the Fall Council meeting at Colonial Heritage on September 28 th . I do so appreciate all that your members did to make this meeting run smoothly, from organizing and welcoming to providing wonderful refreshments and more…thank you. I hope everyone enjoyed Robin Seeterlin’s program “Cut Flowers from Your Landscape”. As gardeners and/or garden lovers, we all want to learn from the experts. It is with great sadness that we advise you of the passing of Gail P. McNaughton, a member of Brandon Woods Garden Club for many years. Gail served as President of the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs 2009-2011. During her tenure, the annual fall work day for Hospice House & Support Care of Williamsburg was established and the WACGC adopted a new logo by Williamsburg artist, Juliet Kirby. She was loved by all who knew her; her kind spirit and giving nature will be greatly missed. Gail passed away September 15 after a long and courageous battle with cancer and was buried in Williamstown, New Jersey. She is survived by her husband, Gordon. You may extend condolences through a Guest Book at the Nelsen Funeral Home site online or to the home at 3427 Darden Place, 23188.

WACGC TREASURER Ellen Schiavone, Brandon Woods Garden Club [email protected]

Thank you to those garden clubs who have submitted their 2017-18 dues by the September due date. A gentle reminder to those who have not yet sent their dues in, checks should be made payable to "WACGC" and mailed to 3505 Hollingsworth, 23188. Each garden club is responsible for contributing $1.30 per club member with a cap of 80 members. Please note that no statements will be mailed to individual clubs; there was some confusion in past years with incoming club treasurers waiting for a bill from the Council. If you have questions, please contact Ellen at [email protected].

The 33rd Annual Arbor Day Awards Ceremony sponsored by the Williamsburg Area Council of Garden Clubs and hosted by James City County, will be held March 9, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Legacy Hall, 4301 New Town Ave, Williamsburg, VA 23188. The Council will honor individuals, organizations, businesses and institutions that have contributed to promoting and maintaining the horticultural environment of our community. Now is the time to look around the community and to select the properties you feel worthy of nomination. This is an ideal time to photograph and catch the beauty of the landscape. We encourage you to nominate gardens that that give you pleasure or properties that have been greatly improved. Private gardens and residential landscapes are not eligible. Please contact your club’s Arbor Day representative(s) for nomination forms and instructions. You may also contact the Arbor Day Committee Co-Chairmen listed below. Deadline for submitting nominations is November 1, 2017.

WACGC HOSPICE HOUSE Dollie Marshall, The Williamsburg Garden Club [email protected]

Clubs responsible for arrangements: October - Berkeley Garden Club November - Brandon Woods Garden Club All WACGC member clubs are invited to send representatives to Hospice House on Tuesday, November 7 at 9 a.m. for the annual Pansy Planting Day. A rain date is scheduled for Friday, November 10 at 9 a.m. Hats, gardening/planting tools and smiles required! This year’s pansy colors are blue, purple and white. Don’t forget that husbands or significant others are welcomed to the planting fest. This is a community service endeavor that welcomes visitors to Hospice House and brightens their day with a little cheerfulness. The best part is that the plants last through the winter months with the help of Gary, who keeps the deer population away! Clubs and/or individuals wishing to contribute to the project can send monetary donations to Ellen Schiavone, 3505 Hollingsworth, Williamsburg 23188.

WACGC WILLIAMSBURG WREATH DECORATION Mary Grogan - 757-258-5861

[email protected]

We will be decorating the wreaths on Wednesday, November 29 beginning at 9 am in the Community Building (across from the Regional Library). We have 20 wreaths to decorate. Like past years, bring anything you would like, as long as it is natural or looks natural. A few suggestions are: cinnamon sticks, lemons, limes, oranges or dried slices of any of the listed fruits. We need to keep in mind they will be on display for 5 weeks so whatever materials you bring need to last. I will bring some dried hydrangea blossoms, pine cones, lily pad pods and any other dried items I can find. Other items you might consider would be oyster shells and magnolia seed pods. I will be asking for 2 people from each club, but if more want to come they are welcome. The tables will be set up just like last year with pictures of where they will be placed and a zip-tie to put on the top. Remember to bring your clippers. Will is bringing the wire and refreshments. This is a great time to meet new people and see how different people approach decorating a wreath.

Fall Tidewater District Meeting – October 30, 2017. Please join us at the Greenbrier Country Club, 1301 Volvo Drive, Chesapeake, VA. for our annual fall general meeting. We are thrilled that Carmen Hegge-Kleiser, Ford’s Colony Garden Club, will present her program “All The Presidents’ White House Gardens”. Attendance at district meetings is a great way to find out what garden clubs around the area are “up to” and to meet other “like minded

The 2018 Vision of Beauty Calendars feature full-page color photos of designs of different types, and the price remains at $6.00 each. I am encouraging each member of garden clubs to purchase at least one calendar. The photos will be helpful in coming up with designs for your own arrangements. The 2018 calendars will be on sale at each Tidewater District and WACGC Board and General meetings. Anyone wanting to place an order can contact me by email ([email protected]) or phone call (757-566-2376).

OPPORTUNITY TO ARRANGE PROGRAMS. At the end of this year, I will be giving up the Program Chair position for the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The Garden needs someone willing to take this over. Additionally, that person has the option of serving on the Board.

Program Chair responsibilities include:

• Arranging for speakers for the Adult Learn and Grow Educational Series--one a month January - November on the 3rd Saturday of the month.

Page 6: October 2017 - WordPress.com · 10/10/2017  · WGC GREEN MARKET Linda Wenger, The Williamsburg Garden Club lwenger@cox.net , 757-813-1987 The Williamsburg Garden Club is currently

• Being there (Interpretive Center-9:15a) to greet and answer questions from the attendees, having the handouts available, and assisting the speaker as needed--other volunteers can help you.

• If the Chairman of the Board is not available, you will be the person to announce WBG happenings and introduce the speaker.

• Seeing that the speaker gets a $50.00 honorarium and writing a follow-up note of thanks.

There are a few additional miscellaneous duties which we can go into if you think you would be willing to take on this project. I would work with you to get 2018 set up. Please let me know if you think you would be interested in this position. Thank you for considering the opportunity! PROGRAM OCTOBER 21: USING HARDY FERNS IN THE LANDSCAPE. Freedom Park Interpretive Center, 10:00 a.m., open to the public. Jim Orband, retired York County Extension Agent and Senior Agent Emeritus, will present a very comprehensive discussion of ferns that are hardy to the climate of the Tidewater area. Slides will be used to illustrate landscape applications for ferns, identification of ferns, and seasonal interest of ferns in the landscape, as well as resources to learn more about ferns. This event is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The program is free, although a $5.00 donation to help the Garden grow is appreciated. For more information, contact Jim by email at [email protected]. After the program, Master Gardeners will be in the Garden to answer questions and talk about what is in bloom. PROGRAM NOVEMBER 18: MEDICINAL HERBS: MYTHS, STORIES AND HOW TO GROW. Freedom Park Interpretive Center, 10:00 a.m., open to the public. Briscoe White, co-owner of The Growers Exchange which began in 1985 and over the years has become a successful web-based business, will share his knowledge on growing herbs. Briscoe’s workplace is in Charles City where his farm covers 650 acres and includes 10 greenhouses. The Growers Exchange ships over 100,000 herb plants of 160 types each year. Come join us for Briscoe’s informative presentation. This event is part of the Learn and Grow Educational Series sponsored by the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. The program is free, although a $5.00 donation to help the Garden grow is appreciated. For more information, contact Briscoe by email at [email protected]. Weather permitting, Master Gardeners will be in the Garden after the program to answer questions and talk about what is in bloom.
