Hello Texas Chapter Members & Friends,
First, I would like to thank everyone who attended the Jack Sanders Banquet on Oc-
tober 7, it turned out to be a very great night. Congratulations again to Hope Cooper for win-
ning the Jack Sanders award, along with all of our other awardees, we thank you very much
for your contributions to the Texas Chapter and its members. Since we swap the locations of
the Jack Sanders banquet every year between Houston and San Antonio, not everyone gets to
attend the banquet at one time, but just know that the next one in Houston will be October
2018 and we will be back at the Houston Downtown Aquarium, they treated us very well.
The Board of Directors for 2016-2017 were sworn in by our National Vice President, Charlie Brown during the
banquet and your current Board of Directors are:
Anne Robinson-President
Tammy Jones-Vice President
Darrell Wilson-Treasurer and National Director
John Taylor-Secretary
David Bradshaw-Board Member #1
Alvin Guerrero-Board Member #2
Derrick Perkins-Board Member #3
We have a couple of vacancies in director positions that we need to fill, if you are interested in becoming more involved,
especially in the Houston area, please let me know.
During the first week of October, our national vice president, Charlie Brown, along with the national parliamentarian
Robert Thomas, Len Seflon,PVA General Counsel and John Ringer, PVA’s CFO sat down with the Board and several
directors and went through two days of board training with us, covering everything from bylaws and governing documents,
to the proper use of Roberts rules, our finances, and the general running of the chapter. Everything went well and it reaf-
firmed that the board of directors and the chapter are strong and doing the right things to ensure TPVA’s mission is suc-
cessful.
I want to close by asking you all if you know where the money comes from that allows TPVA to run all of its membership
programs? When I asked at the San Antonio membership forum only a couple of people knew. First, we do not receive
any money from the government. We are partnered with an organization called “Family Thrift,” a chain of thrift stores that
picks up donated items from people all over Houston, San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and places in between. When people
donate the clothing or small household appliances, we in turn receive money from the donation. On average, the thrift store
donations bring in approximately $387,000 a year. We receive a monthly grant from the national organization and the rest
of the money we work very diligently at earning through fundraising events. So, if you have close laying around the house
that you need to get rid of or small appliances such as toasters or coffee pots, or books, think about donating it to the thrift
store so that it helps raise money for more membership program opportunities. All you have to do is call for pickup, you
unfortunately cannot drop stuff off at the thrift stores, but we will include the pickup line phone number and the addresses
to the thrift stores in this newsletter.
Thank you to all our spouses, caregivers and significant others who allow us to do what we do.

Reach Higher!
Learning to communicate can seem a miraculous work. Giving voice to thought so that someone
understands us reverberates in the depth of our being as giving us identity, significance and
community. And our words can inspire hope in others.
Consider Hellen Keller who was the first deaf and blind person to earn a B.A. degree. When she learned
to speak she said there are four things to learn in life:
1. To think clearly without hurry of confusion.
2. To love everybody sincerely.
3. To act in evertyhing with the highest motives.
4. To trust God unhesitatingly.
Think, love, act, trust - that from a lady who as a child was angry, even violent. Helen, the daughter and
granddaughter of Army Veterans, learned to listen to others by touching their lips and to music through
vibrations also felt through her hands. She learned to speak from “The Miracle Worker,” Annie Sullivan,
whose superhuman patience and persistence wrought the poised author, activist and public speaker.
Some will read these notes and be inspired to try something new today. Others will read more about
Helen Keller and, perhaps, choose to alter their academic or vocational path. Most will likely sit in awe,
feel satisfied knowing their world is not all bad, and perhaps mention Helen or my article to a friend. Are
you like some, others or most? Or might you be another worker of miracles? Who knows, it might just
be within your Higher Power!

Executive Director Report By Amanda Saunders
Well hopefully we’ve made it to fall here in Texas. I didn’t think this summer would ever
end!
It was good to see those of you who made it to the Jack Sanders Banquet. I wish more of
you would have come. It was a nice change having it at the Aquarium, instead of a hotel
ballroom. The food was much better too.
We received a large donation of deer meat and have plenty at the chapter office. Please let us know if you’d
like to come by and pick some up. There is a lot of it and we will be getting more in.
We will be participating in the Salute Houston Veterans Day Parade again this year. The line up hasn’t been
released yet, but I believe our staging area will be inbound on Allen Parkway before Bagby. We’ll have lunch
at Pappa’s BBQ after the parade and then deliver hot dogs to in-patients. On Saturday, November 12th we will
hold our 3rd Annual Freedom Shoot at Clay Mound Sporting Center in Liberty. Please join us for both!
I need suggestions of fun activities those of you around Houston would like to do. A couple of people have
suggested a night at the Sam Houston Race Park for live horse racing. If you would be interested please let me
know.
I am working on revamping our Emergency Assistance Program so that it will benefit more veterans, espe-
cially our non-service connected members. I will advise once all of the details are worked out.
I hope everyone is doing well and please let me know if I can be of any assistance to you.
