Rebels WITHOUT A CAUSE

IN THIS ISSUE we are taking inspiration from all things Wes Anderson The masked charac-ters on our cover were inspired by the strange

large painting hanging above the couch in the 2001 film The Royal Tenenbaums The masks themselves were inspired by the disguises worn to hide from adults in Andersonrsquos 2012 Moonrise Kingdom Whether you are a grown man posing intimidatingly on a four-wheeler or a 12-year-old running from consequences a good mask ignites adventure and makes you feel like you can get away with anythingemsp

Check out the cover to

see three of these masks

as found in their haunted

woodland habitat

DIRECTIONS1 If you are not naturally gifted at visual-

izing shapes to build a critter there are all kinds of great templates that you can find and print out on Pinterest or Etsy

2 Cut out shapes from paper then place them on a piece of felt of the same color Lightly trace around the shape with a pen and cut out that piece of felt with scissors

3 Continue this until you have all of the shapes cut to form an entire mask I doubled the felt for any piece of the mask considered to be a ldquobaserdquo in order to make the mask a bit sturdier by spraying one layer with an adhesive laying it on top of another piece and cutting my shape out of both pieces at once

4 When layering the mask together flip over cut-out pieces so that you do not see any pen marks that you have made Keep in mind that the mask will look backwards compared to your template but the result will be much cleaner

5 Make sure that all of the pieces are in order before hot-glue-ing each piece in its place

6 Cut a hole on either side of the mask and feed the elastic band through the holes Tie the elastics to the masks and you are ready for a night as a woodland critter

WHEN THE OTHER little girls in Nancy Beal Meyerrsquos third grade class were coloring and making

crafts Beal Meyer was begging her mother for an opportunity to learn about art Not the art from her elementary school classroom but rather the strokes and techniques behind such Impressionistic artists as Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir

And lucky for her her mother said yes

Finding a teacher would prove the bigger issue Private art classes for younger children didnrsquot extend into actual technique and structure of oil painting and Beal Meyer was yearning for more The only classes her mother could find were led by Dorothy Ruge and those were just for high school students But that didnrsquot stop

Beal Meyer She jumped right in and learned alongside students double her age When Ruge retired five years later Beal Meyer at just 14 years old took matters into her own hands She found Augustus W Dunbier a renowned local German Impressionist painter But like Ruge he would only teach adults He told her that she could observe but couldnrsquot be an actual student in his class Following his strict instruction every Saturday morning Beal Meyer would set her easel up directly in back of Dunbier and observe every stroke and detail of what he painted Finally after seeing her potential he relented and brought her into the fold eventually becoming her mentor and ongoing teacher

Since then Beal Meyer has spent her lifetime not only painting but teaching others that art is truly limitless As an artist-in-residence for Millard Public Schools through a grant from the Nebraska Arts Council and individual schools PTA funding Beal Meyerrsquos not just teaching the mechanics of art but also the power of what art can do to your life

And itrsquos amazing how far her reach has spread

After graduating from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a BFA as well as K-12 certification in art instruction Beal Meyer taught after-school art programs to the at-risk youth at Omaha Home for Boys She knew then that she had found her gift ldquoit just takes someone helping them to take them where they want to gordquo

From helping a student with his scholarship portfolio to design school to showing them careers in graphic design they never knew existed Beal Meyer has always been dedicated to helping students see beyond whatrsquos right in front of them ldquoArt isnrsquot just about draw-ing and paintingrdquo she explains ldquoItrsquos about career opportunities and seeing what they can do with artrdquo

Since those early days at the Omaha Home for Boys Nancy has been an advocate for the power of art programs in elementary-based education programs ldquoArt is what grounds people it makes people kind and sanerdquo She fears where our education system is going with the cutting of art and music programs from the younger-aged school programs Millard School District has already cut their art programs at the elementary school level and only offers art cur-riculum by individual classroom teachers Beal Meyer is able to teach at schools like Sandoz Elementary and Wheeler Elementary because of Nebraska Art Council grants and PTA fundraising But every year her fate is unknown ldquoItrsquos sadrdquo she explains ldquoKids need this They want to learnrdquo

That is obvious from the pile of thank-you notes from her most recent students stacked on her table Each with a message of hope for a world Beal Meyer opened up to them A hope shersquos happy to give ldquoThey need someone telling them that they can do itrdquo

And itrsquos not just for them ldquoThis work in the schools is my heart These kids are my heart I want the world to see that they deserve morerdquo And shersquos doing just thatmdashone artist at a time

laquo These friends do not know that Saetia has another hobby requiring balance and flexibility

She her younger brother Adrien 7 and their father Brian all enjoy skateboarding

The father of two has joint custody of his kids Five years ago he gifted each child with a board

The family can be found some Saturday morn-ings at The Bay skate park in Lincoln during structured lesson time

ldquoWe donrsquot have to watch out for more advanced skatersrdquo Brian says

He himself is teaching his kids to ride

Adrien a shy little guy hovers near his father and tries to avoid talking Brian says itrsquos because there is someone new in the room

Adrien rides straight on a board and does tricks like Half-Turtle in which he lays with his backside on the nose of the board his feet in the air and pivots on the board He also likes to ride off of curbs and is learning how to drop in or ride down a quarter-pipe

Saetia also likes to perform Half-Turtle and she can turn the skateboard around in a full spin (with a couple of stops along the way) She likes to ride on the half pipe but does not drop in

ldquoAdrien takes more risks on the boardrdquo Brian says

The family also visits Roberts Park in Omaha for their skateboarding adventures

ldquoDad is that the big bowlrdquo Saetia asks

ldquoRightrdquo Brian confirms

When the kids are not skating they along with their father and his girlfriend Angel Piniarski go to skateboarding-inspired art exhibits and attend skating shows where Saetia has acquired the signatures of such notables as Tony Hawk and Mark Gonzales

The punk-ish fun stays at Brianrsquos house Once the kids leave the skateboarding life is hidden away gone underground one might sayemsp
