THE WIDE ANGLE Seated Forward Bend stretches the hamstrings and inner thighs, tones and strengthens the spine, opens the hips, and stimu-lates the abdominal muscles, all while relaxing the mind.
Wide Angle Seated Forward Bend
SANSKRIT NAME: UPAVISTHA KONASANA(OO-PAH-VEESH-TAH CONE-AHS-ANNA)
1. Sit upright and separate the legs, creating a v shape. 2. Rotate the legs back so that the
knees face towards the sky, and flex your toes to protect the knee caps.3. Ground the sit bones to the earth, and lengthen the spine by reaching the crown of the head towards the sky.4. Roll the shoulders down the back, and away from the ears. Open through the chest to unround the spine.
5. Actively press the thigh bones into the ground.6. Inhale deeply, and as you exhale, bend forward at the hip joints. 7. Place hands on the ground in front of you, and reach forward (for a more advanced pose, grab each of the big toes with the
peace sign fingers and thumb).8. Breathe deeply for 10-20 breaths.9. Inhale to come up, and repeat.

Autumn Wreaths
6 HerFamily November 2015
DIY written by KRISTEN HOFFMAN | photography by BILL SITZMANN
WHAT YOU'LL NEED: Natural vine wreath Foliage, pheasant feathers, pine cones, acorns Wire cutter Hot glue gun Door hanger
Autumn Wreaths
ABOUT THIS TIME each year our minds start drifting away from work and daily responsibilities, and our thoughts are filled with excitement for the cold air and holiday season. I walk into craft stores looking for something to adorn my door, but the wreaths that I find always seem to be too gaudybursting with mini-pumpkins, monograms, and sparkly fake leaves. While many women love to decorate their homes in all that is glitter, I prefer to decorate with the natural elements of autumn. So, I decided to make one myself out of things I love the most about this season.
DIRECTIONS1. Do some research. Look at different shapes and
styles of wreaths to figure out what you prefer.2. Choose a natural vine wreath that fits the size of your door. If it is too large, it may over-whelm your entry. If it is too small, it may not pack enough punch to do your door credit.3. Pick out some foliage (real or faux) that draws your eye. For fall colors, it is safe to stay in the warmer color range, but do not be afraid to throw some green or purple into the mix.4. With a wire cutter, clip off individual pieces from each bunch of foliage. Weave the ends of each piece through the nat-ural vine wreath until secure. Be sure to tuck in any end that is sticking out, unless you mean for it to hang down.5. Wreaths tend to look best when they are heavy on the bottom left or bottom right side. Make this section full, and disperse foliage sparingly as you work your way around the wreath.6. Hot glue any pieces that cannot be woven through the natural vine, such as pine cones or acorns. Be sure to use a gen-erous amount of glue since the sur-
face will most likely not be flat.7. Hook the door hanger under the top of the wreath, and proudly display on your front door.

written by DAISY HUTZELL-RODMAN | photography by BILL SITZMANNMEET THE FAMILY
LIKE IT IS in any home with small children, the kitchen can be a flurry of activity when it comes to mealtime at the home of Brian Wetjen and Jill Rizzo. Brian makes PB&J while daughter Elke (4), uses the cap of a marker to transform a slice of American into its Swiss cousin. Meanwhile son Calder (7), attempts to bring a science play-set to the dining table.Calder, not now, Brian says. Well do science in a little while. Its a Sunday scene that mimics their weekday livesBrian stays home with the kids while wife Jill goes to work at Hayneedle, where she is the creative director. Brian works from home as a website designer, but took this past summer off while the kids were out of school.Hectic though it may seem, the familys lives have simplified over the past three years. Thats when Brian ran his own company and Jill worked as the design director at Bozell. They each toiled more than 40 hours a week, leaving little family time.We hated having to use the term who has to pick up the kids, Jill says, because we both wanted to pick up the kids.Once Calder got into kindergarten, Brian adds, we realized we wanted him to be able to come home after school. Thats really what kids wantthey want to be at home.
The lifestyle transition initially caused worry for Jill, who wondered about the what ifs, as in what if I lose my job?Brian took the opposite road.Instead of sabotaging it in your brain, he says why dont we think wowlook at all the positives.'Also easing Jills worry is how the couple thinks about materialism, not just from a monetary standpoint, but as a philosophy that forms their values.I recognized I was spending money on just stuff, Jill says. Like stuff for the house. Id buy new pillows and placemats, but we didnt need them, it was just more stuff. It was retail therapy, Brian adds. And Im in retail! Jill quips with a laugh. One area of stuff the couple have carefully cultivated is their kids belongings. Markers, paper, and play-dough clutter the kid-sized crafting table at the end of the galley kitchens counters, while a play kitchen sits next to the dining table, ready to prepare any manner of made-up meals.A lot of the toy choices we make for them are either a) things we loved, or b) art supplies,
Brian says. We also built a really big sand box in the backyard so they can dig and build things. The kids creative spirits rub off on their parents. Jill is a noted artist and the kids like to spend time painting with their mom.We work on art projects at night, she says. I have an easel set up for them in my studio, and they will come down and paint with meor vice versa. Calder, specifically, will come up and ask me, Mom, why arent you painting?Changes in school curricula over the years have influenced how this couple organizes family life.Theres less art, less music, less movement in school, Jill adds, all so they can get better test scores. Freedom of thought allows them to be creative problem-solvers.Unstructured time is just as important as structured time, Brian says.Calder has drifted into another room by him-self to work with his iPad, while Elke bounces on the small trampoline in the TV-less family room, holding onto a small attached railing while she bounces and bounces, joyfully crying look at me!Aforementioned, structured time is just as important as unstructured time.
CREATING A SIMPLE LIFE

Wetjen &RizzoJill
Brian
We have a routine, Brian says. I make breakfast, Jill goes to work. I walk Calder to school then take Elke to preschool.Calder is in second grade at Swanson Elementary. Brian comes home and has a couple of hours to work before picking up Elke, then they have a couple of hours in the afternoon before picking up Calder.Once school lets out, the kids get time to do what they wantplaying outside or inside. Brian and the kids make sure the house is picked up on Fridays so the family can participate in things they want to do on the weekends. Their seemingly carefree situation is the envy of their friends. Most of our friends are pretty laid back, Brian says. Most of them have said, boy, I wish I could do this. A big focus for both Brian and Jill is travel. They have taken the kids to see Jills extended family in upstate New York along with trips to Colorado and North Carolina. The couple hope to travel more as the kids age.We want to incorporate as many new experiences as possible, Jill says. The less is more philosophy has worked well for the family, and they encourage others not necessarily to do things their way, but in whatever way works best. Not everyone can work from home, Brian admits, but if you think about it, you can design your life the way you want. 10 HerFamily November 2015

14 HerFamily November 2015
written by DAVID WILLIAMS THE GRANDPA CHRONICLES
THE OLD ADAGE about never forget-ting after learning how to ride a bike is pure hokum, and this grandpa is living proof. On a recent camping trip with grandsons Barrett (4) and Easton (5), I climbed aboard my daughter-in-laws girlie bikethe rob-ins egg blue cruiser outfitted with a cute basket that is perfect for holdingI dunnokewpie dolls or friendship bracelets or other sugar-and-spice paraphernalia.About three feet into my wobbly peddling it struck me that I could not remember the last time I had been on a bicycle. After giving it some thought, I pegged the year to be 1981. I wont bore you with the comical, look-out-for-that-tree details of our ride over hill and over dale (poor Dale) through the campground that day.The experience reminded me that Barrett and Easton are born-to-ride daredevils when it comes to two-wheeled action. Not 10 days after the training wheels came off Barretts bike he was already flying along the Wabash Trace Trail over
in Iowa on one of the popular Taco Rides, and his family has since taken 10-mile jaunts along other, sometimes more challenging trails while crisscrossing the metro. The thought of which is all absolutely horri-fying to me.And doubly so for my wife, Julie. When we let our imaginations get the best of us, life as grandparents can be a pins-and-needles game of waiting for that inevitable phone call from my son or daughter-in-law where we are informed, Well, just thought wed tell you that were on our way to the emergency room.Thats where this story was supposed to end. Sure, I would have yammered on for a paragraph or three on the terrors of being the grandpa of two young, adventurous boys who dont know the meaning of fearbut that was going to be pretty much it. Column done. Over. See ya next issue.Except that we did, in fact, get that phone call. One week to the day after my tottering bike ride inspired this column, Barrett did a face-plant
onto the pavement off his otherwise trusty steed. Yes, he was wearing a helmet, as always, but he knocked out three front teeth, and his bruised and bloodied face looked like a punch-drunk Robert Ne Niro in Raging Bull.My son, Eric, was a BMX rebel in his teen years, and I recall holding my breath (thank goodness for a gold-plated medical plan) every time that starter gate dropped with a clang and a quartet of riders hurtled toward certain doom. That was at the bicycle track down in Lincoln but now, a generation later, Omaha has a BMX death trap of its own.And Erics reaction to the events of last week-end? He plans to have Barrett fitted with a new mouthguard before going airborne for the first time in a gravity-defying ride on and over the dirt moguls of the local track. All before my grandsons fat lip is even given a chance to recede to its former pretty-boy profile.God help us all.
