Hello Spinners and Weavers,
Did everyone make it to the Fleece and Fiber Fair? It seemed like the whole world was there. Record number of fibre frenzied shoppers jostled for the offerings. What a fabulous fair!
And did you take a big basket?
I did, and the cat, who stayed home, had to make do with this old easter basket.

Anita Luvera MayerONE WOMAN’S CREATIVE JOURNEY
We were very fortunate to have Anita Luvera Mayer come to give a workshop and evening talk. Those who were at the workshop came away inspired and filled to the brim with creative ideas, and wonderful embellished bags. And the evening presentation was no less inspiring. Anita’s stories and insights into her creative journey were gorgeously illustrated with her set of 17 vests - each one a unique exploration of artistry, personal expression and materials.

Weavers and More Sale at the Loft
Setting up the Sale at the Loft on Halloween. It went swiftly and smoothly, and As always, Looney Lofters arranged a feast of fabulous work by our members.

Alison Irwin has done us proud! While we were sleeping, she created this Agricultural Education Exhibit of our Sheep to Shawl day; then she and Tony drove up to Sun Peaks for the BC Fairs Convention. The first prize plaque and ribbon come with a 500 dollar cheque which will be deposited into the Sheep to Shawl fund for 2014 http://www.bcfairs.ca/

Show and Tell
CW: Anna Marie Hogan brought a beautiful shuttle and linen towel back from Sweden. Sandi D is making felt critters for the sale, Annelise brought this Norwegian book of contemporary and traditional textiles and clothing.Cherry is wearing her newly finished top down sweater which she started in a sweater making workshop.

Evid’s wool ruana modeled by Annelise, Barbara Dowd’s fine wool/alpaca spun on her new drop spindle, and Cynthia’s lunch bag which she is making for the sale at the Loft.

Cynara’s cotton/soy cotton canvas weave baby blanket, lace shawl from silk/soysilk/kid handspun, and wool colour gamp baby blanket.
Alison’s series of double weave pin-cushions - once of which will be the door-prize at Anita Luvera Mayer’s lecture on Sunday, 26th of October.

Karen brought fiber that she dyed gold with Paeolus schweinitzii, a mushroom that is associated with conifers. The fresh specimens give glorious clear golds but even the old dried up black ones give a lovely tawny gold.
Cynara brought wool dyed red with Cortinarius, this one is called western red dye. The mushroom is deadly toxic to eat, but it produces vibrant coral red shades with alum mordant - even after being in the freezer for a couple of years!Use with good ventilation and care!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

Similar reds can be obtained from the plentiful and edible lobster mushroom. Peel the red skins for the dye bath.
But before you hit the trail with your mushroom basket, pack a good mushroom book, some protective gloves, a small mirror to check gill color, and bags to separate your foragings, so there is no danger of toxins getting on edibles!Before you reach for the dyepot, do some reading. More on Indigo dyeingBarbara Dowd has been following Marcel Garcia’s method for extracting indigo from the leaves for future use. . This involves soaking the fresh leaves in hot water, liming the bath and filtering through cloth. This is her first result.
So! indigo together with mushrooms, we have the three primary colours!

We have a new member, Kazuko Nagai. She came on both meeting and textile day, with wonderful show and tell, and boxes and boxes of stash for sale, which guild members hungrily lapped up. Thank you Kazuko, for such generosity, and inspirational show and tell.

Barbara Birke’s extraordinary contemporary lace work has been included in this huge German lacemaker’s book which explores modern lace grounds and their technique and uses. Congratulations Barbara!
