SUNDAY CONNECTION

Wisdom 7:7-11 - Wisdom is preferred above gold and silver.

Psalm 90:12-13,14-15,16-17 - The Lord fills us with love and joy.

Hebrews 4:12-13 - The Word of God exposes the heart.

Mark 10:17-30 - A man with many possessions asks Jesus what he

must do to gain eternal life.

Background on the Gospel Reading

Today we con4nue reading the Gospel of Mark from where we le7

off last Sunday. Last Sunday our Gospel told how Jesus was tested

by the Pharisees about the requirements for divorce. Recall that

these chapters come from the second part of Mark’s Gospel, which

chronicles the beginning of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem. In today’s

Gospel, an unnamed man approaches Jesus and inquires about

what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus replies that one must

follow the commandments of the Law of Moses. The man acknowl-

edges that he has observed all of these since his childhood. Jesus

then says that only one thing is lacking: he must give his posses-

sions to the poor and follow Jesus. The man leaves in sadness, and

Mark tells us that this is because he had many possessions. The

belief in resurrec4on and eternal life was a rela4vely recent devel-

opment in Jewish thought at Jesus’ 4me, and it wasn’t shared by

everyone. The Pharisees taught that there would be a resurrec4on

from the dead; the Sadducees did not share this belief. Jesus

taught that there would be a final judgment for everyone and eter-

nal life (the Kingdom of God) for believers. Jesus makes two re-

quirements of the wealthy man who approaches him. First, he

must give up his possessions. Throughout history, some Chris4ans

have taken this literally. Their example witnesses to us a radical

commitment to the Gospel of Jesus. Some have read this as a par-

4cular requirement directed to this specific individual. S4ll others

have sought to explain the meaning intended by the word posses-

sions as those things that prevent one from following Jesus. Chris-

4ans have generally understood that at the least, following Jesus

requires that believers hold material possessions loosely and re-

main vigilant against seeking security in accumula4ng possessions.

The second requirement Jesus makes of this man is the invita4on

that Jesus extends to all would-be disciples: “follow me.” Jesus

very much wants this man to be his disciple. We believe that the

Chris4an faith is one in which each believer is in a personal rela-

4onship with Jesus. Just as this Gospel tells us that Jesus loves the

man and is sad when he departs, so too, Jesus loves us and is sad-

dened when we are unable to follow him. We see in this Gospel

reading another example of Mark’s pa$ern, which shows Jesus

offering further elabora4on about his message and meaning to his

disciples. To his disciples, Jesus laments the challenges faced by

those who are rich in following him and entering the Kingdom of

God. In reply to the disciples’ astonishment at the strictness of the

standard that Jesus speaks about today, Jesus reminds his disciples

that nothing is impossible with God. Salva4on is determined by our

ability to rely completely upon God. Peter replies to Jesus by

boas4ng that the disciples have already given up everything. Jesus

acknowledges that those who have given up everything for the

sake of the Gospel will be rewarded. This reward begins now, in

the new community that one will gain in this life, and will con4nue

in the eternal age to come. Our personal rela4onship with Jesus is

also an invita4on to the community of faith, the Church.

MATH MATTERS AT SAINT MARTHA SCHOOL! Our students are once again preparing for the MATHCOUNTS compe44on, to be held in early

February. MATHCOUNTS is a na4onal program, whose mission is to increase enthusiasm for and

enhance achievement in middle school mathema4cs throughout the United States.

This year, students in grades six, seven, and eight will be working to represent our school. Mrs. Hall

and Mrs. Kempel coach students during our school day to prepare them for the compe44on.

The problems are very challenging and require higher levels of cri4cal thinking.

We hope to a$end the compe44on in February and also compete in our own inner-school

compe44on. We are very proud of the students who take this challenge on, and look forward to

seeing their growth as mathema4cians this year!

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS UNVEILS NEW INITIATION CEREMONY THAT WILL BE PUBLIC

by Andy Telli, Catholic News Service

first published via www.ncronline.org on January 30, 2020

A7er 142 years, the Knights of Columbus is pulling down a veil of secrecy that has surrounded its ini4a4on ceremonies, in an

effort to be$er showcase the order's core principles and its drive to help Catholic men become disciples.

Since its founding in 1882, the ini4a4on ceremonies for the first three degrees of Knights membership - focused on the

principles of charity, unity, and fraternity - have been separate and open to members only. The fourth degree, dedicated to

the principal of patrio4sm, was added later and this ini4a4on was secret and for members only.

But star4ng this year, the Knights have adopted a new ceremony. Called the Exemplifica4on of Charity, Unity, and Fraternity,

it combines the ini4a4on for the first three degrees into a single ceremony that will be open to family, friends, and fellow

parishioners.

"There is nothing we do that is secret or needs to be secret," Supreme Knight Carl Anderson told the Tennessee Register,

newspaper of the Diocese of Nashville. "We decided this is a way to let other parishioners know, family members know, what

the Knights of Columbus is all about. We think that's a good thing."

The fourth-degree ceremony will remain unchanged and will con4nue to be open to members only.

"Secrecy has to be understood in the context of the 19th century," Anderson said. "There was incredible bigotry against

Catholics, with the an4-Catholic No Nothings in control poli4cally in New England at the 4me, and the Ku Klux Klan later

became a powerful poli4cal force across the country,” he said.

"There was some appeal to secrecy."

Also at the 4me, the idea of progressing through the degrees as a journey toward Knighthood was popular.

But today, those features have proved to be an impediment to men joining, par4cularly young men, Anderson said.

The new single ceremony takes about 30 minutes, Anderson said.

By opening the ceremony to the public, "families and friends can see what we're all about and hopefully decide I or my

brother or my husband should join," Anderson said.

The new degree ceremony pulls from the three previous ceremonies to pass along the organiza4on's history and the

importance of the principles rooted in the organiza4on.

"We need to impress on the members the importance of charity, unity, fraternity, how they are linked, and how in

McGivney's vision of Chris4an discipleship ... charity, unity, and fraternity become a path of discipleship for the Catholic

man," Anderson said.

The script for the new degree calls for the ceremony to be conducted in a church or similarly appropriate loca4on, with a

priest or deacon par4cipa4ng. The expecta4on is that the new ceremony can be held a7er a Mass when the congrega4on can

be invited to stay and watch.

All First and Second Degree Brother Knights are encouraged to take advantage of this new ceremony to become full

members of the Knights of Columbus. Contact Grand Knight Dante Ianni at [email protected] or Larry Leece at

[email protected] to learn more about the new Exemplifica on and the date of the next scheduled Exemplifica on

at Saint Martha. We would be honored to have you experience the new Exemplifica on!
