about understanding the natural world. Town, city or countryside you are only ever minutes from an open natural space which is usually abundant with produce and ablaze with colour. So, when you’re sitting under a vast blue sky and considering what it actually is that makes a place so wonderful, go back to basics. Nature and the great outdoors are never cluttered. So don’t try to achieve effect, achieve a balance. Budgeting will currently come high on the list of everyone’s priorities right now but do not let this small inconvenience sway you into buying cheap plastic furniture for a living area that you are trying to achieve so much more with. As with most things in life, and buying outdoor furniture is no exception, you really do get what you pay for. Good furniture will last you many years. However, if expense is an issue then simply furnish your space at a slower pace, buying a few key pieces a little at a time. Think quality over quantity. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your outside space doesn’t have to be either. As a basic rule of design, a static piece of furniture, a table for example, needs to be solid and durable enough to take on the elements. Oak and teak are both good examples of this. Slatted wood allows for good drainage (which may be worthy of consideration after the recent winter we have had) and of course marble and granite will certainly survive the elements. However if you fancy a more flexible approach to furnishings, there are plenty of portable items on the market that aren’t green, white or made of plastic. When choosing, think of each piece of furniture as an individual object. Styles and ages can all co habit perfectly well together outside and can make your space interesting as well as enjoyable. Small scale objects such as brightly coloured cushions, candles, lanterns and sculptures will add life and personality and shouldn’t leave a massive dent in your pocket. Terracotta pots of all shapes and sizes will increase depth and texture. You can even add your own touch by painting them in bold splashes of colours.Flexibility is the name of the game, so, as the seasons change, your outdoor space can to. If you fancy a change of furnishings or plants, then do it! The essence of good design, like life, is constant change. n

Un aumento de compradores y de inversores ha partido el mercado inmobiliario español. Las ventas son del 200% en algunas zonas comparadas con el 2009- a pesar de que los Bancos afirman que el año pasado fue el peor en décadas para la inversión extranjera en inmuebles en España. “En algunas partes de España las cosas están yendo bien en este momento, pero hay dos mercados completamente diferentes” según James Dearsley, director de ventas europeas en la agencia Atlas Internacional La compañía ha notado un aumento importante en las ventas desde noviembre de 2009. Esta rotura ha visto cómo los compradores habituales eligen zonas menos construidas en vez de los pueblos y ciudades. Mientras los inversores buscan oportunidades de última hora en zonas más pobladas cómo la Costa del Sol y Costa Blanca.

A price war for deposits between Spanish lenders could be the catalyst for mass failure of the country’s struggling savings bank system, according to bankers and analysts. Troubles for the regional savings banks, or cajas, may even trigger sovereign debt problems in the eurozone’s fourth-biggest economy.BBVA, Spain’s number two private sector bank, decided to match an aggressive 4 per cent deposit rate offer by Santander, the market number one. The move will attract business away from the country’s unlisted cajas, depriving them of crucial funding.“This will kill the cajas,” said one senior European investment banking adviser.

“This is one of the last nails in the coffin.”BBVA increased to 4 per cent the rate offered to savers who moved their money from Santander, responding to a similar offer from its bigger rival. Rates for other customers have risen from below 3 per cent to between 3 and 4 per cent.

Spanish banks in price war

A surge of foreign lifestyle buyers and investors has split the Spanish property market. Sales are up 200% in some regions compared with 2009 – despite the Bank of Spain claiming that last year was the worst in a decade for foreign property investment in Spain.“Parts of Spain are doing really well at the moment but there are two completely different markets,” said James Dearsley, European sales manager at agent Atlas International. The company has reported a significant increase in sales since November 2009.The split has seen lifestyle buyers choosing less built-up areas instead of the towns and cities. Meanwhile, investors are looking for distressed bargains in more developed locations such as the southern Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca.

Plaza de la Merced is a large plaza within walking distance of anywhere in Malaga central, the historic

and energetic focal point of this fabulous city. It has much history but nowadays it is a cosmopolitan spot, full of pavement cafés where people from all the world’s continents meet. By day the Plaza is home to internet cafes, coffee mornings and walkers taking a few minutes to relax on the benches and enjoy the scenery. The Plaza is also a popular meeting place for local pigeons on their way to nowhere in particular, providing great entertainment for the children. At night it becomes a gathering spot for the young, trendy nightlife crowd. The young people gather in clusters and mingle around the plaza looking for old friends or making new ones. The atmosphere is always friendly and welcoming. During the summer months it doesn’t get “real” until about 1.00am but even from the time the sun goes down the Plaza takes on the persona of ‘the meeting place’ for anyone out and about enjoying the city’s

nightlife. From the Plaza you can discover various small discotecs, bars and restaurants in hidden alleyways where one can drink, eat and dance until the sun comes up. This Plaza used to serve as free market and at one point it was actually located outside the city walls. In more modern times, it has served as a site for convents and a hospital. King Ferdinand and Queen Isabela entered the city through this Plaza after the Reconquest of Spain in the 15th century. However, Plaza de La Merced had to wait until the 19th century to take on its current appearance. This Plaza represents the cradle of liberties and right in the middle is an obelisk dedicated to the memory of the liberal general Torrijos, who was executed on La Térmica beach for defending civil rights. However, the most famous aspect of Plaza de Merced is that it is Picasso’s birthplace and the family house is now open as a tourist attraction. They say that he loved playing with the pigeons here, much the same as the children of today.

La Plaza de La Merced es una plaza grande a poca distancia del centro de Málaga, el

histórico y enérgico punto de encuentro de esta fabulosa ciudad. Tiene mucha historia, pero hoy en día es un sitio cosmopolita lleno de cafeterías a pie de calle dónde se reúnen gente de todos los continentes. Por el día la Plaza acoge ciber-cafés, desayunos y caminantes tomándose unos minutos para relajarse en sus bancos y disfrutar del escenario. La plaza es también un punto de encuentro popular de las palomas en su camino a ningún sitio en particular, haciendo disfrutar a los niños. Por la noche se convierte en un sitio de reunión para los jóvenes. La gente joven se reúne en grupos y circulan por la plaza buscando viejos amigos o haciendo nuevas amistades. La atmósfera es siempre amistosa y de bienvenida. Durante los meses de verano no se “pone bien” hasta la una de la madrugada, aunque desde el momento que el sol se pone, La Plaza adopta la personalidad de punto de encuentro para los que salen a disfrutar de la noche de esta ciudad. Desde La Plaza puedes descubrir varias discotecas pequeñas, bares y restaurantes en callejones escondidos, dónde podrás comer, beber y bailar hasta que salga el sol.Esta plaza solía servir como mercado libre y en algún momento estaba situada fuera de los muros de la ciudad. En tiempos más modernos, ha servido cómo emplazamiento de conventos y hospitales. Los reyes Católicos entraron en la ciudad a través de esta plaza después de la Reconquista en el siglo XV. Aunque, La Plaza de La Merced tuvo que esperar hasta el siglo XIX para adoptar su apariencia actual. Esta plaza representa la cuna de las libertades y los derechos. En el centro, hay un obelisco dedicado al General Liberal Torrijos, quién fue ejecutado en la playa de La Térmica por defender los derechos civiles. Aunque, el aspecto más famoso de La Plaza de La Merced es que es donde nació Picasso, y la casa donde vivió es ahora una atracción turística. Tapas are quite simply ingenious. It does exactly what it says on the lid. It’s

fantastically fresh, (usually wonderful home cooked local) produce. The tapas you eat will reflect the region of Spain you are eating it in. When munching by the sea, expect a fish heavy tapas, when masticating in the campo habas and lentijas may be the order of the day. However, as a social event tapas can be intriguing – you may be daring and try something you’ve never eaten before. Tapas can be sometimes a little cheeky -one is never enough! And, depending on who you share your tapas with it could definitely be a sexy pastime - always leave them wanting more I’m reliably informed! When you’re eating Tapas, the food is equally as important as the company it’s shared with. Tapa has no social boundaries, no dress code and it’s definitely not heavy going on your finances. I guess that makes it a Lamborghini food miracle on a plate doesn’t it?In Spain tapas is served just about anywhere, anytime. You probably couldn’t walk more than 60 paces (ok, ok ...in a reasonably built up area) without stumbling across a bar serving a sumptuous satisfying tapa of some kind. So come on! What are you waiting for? Isn’t it great we can all have a slice of the tortilla? Partaking in tapas is as simple or complex as you happen to be feeling that day. Anything from a bowl of marinated olives to a small sizzling dish of grilled octopus will suffice, as long as it’s a delicious bite sized companion accompanied, preferably by an alcoholic drink - it’s tapa!

Cuando masca al lado del mar, espere unas tapas de pescado, cuando mastica en el campo, las habas y las lentejas quizás estén a la orden del día. De todas formas, en un evento social, las tapas pueden ser fascinantes –usted quizás sea atrevido e intente con algo que nunca antes había comido. Las Tapas algunas veces pueden ser un poco atrevidas –¡una nunca es suficiente! Y dependiendo de con quien comparta sus tapas podría ser indudablemente un pasatiempo sexy. Siempre quieres más ¡lo sé de buena fuente! Cuando está comiendo Tapas, la comida es tan importante como la compañía. Las Tapas no tienen límites sociales, ni código de vestimenta e indudablemente no pesan en su economía. Supongo que eso convierte el milagro de una comida Lamborghini en un plato, ¿no cree?En España las Tapas se sirven en cualquier sitio y a cualquier hora. Snuggled in foothills of the Sierras Almijaras is the

enchanting village of Cómpeta. The village is at an altitude of 636m, 49km from Málaga and 18km from the coast. pueblo de Competa – dulce y acogedora. El pueblo está a una altitud de 636m sobre el nivel del mar, a 49km de Málaga y a 18km de la costa. Su ubicación, es la cumbre del triángulo formado por la costa entre La Caleta de Vélez y Torrox Costa, con carreteras que parten de ambos pueblos, se convierte una base perfecta para disfrutar de excursiones y aire libre.Las carreteras desde la costa son serpenteantes, con la montaña Maroma (2.066m) asomando en la distancia, proporciona una vista espectacular de uu

fondo. Ambas carreteras al pueblo han sido mejoradas

durante los últimos años. En la ruta se puede parar en el pueblo de Torrox para tomar unas tapas en cualquiera de sus bares de típico ambiente español, lejos del bullicio de la costa. Tambíén en Sayalonga hay muchos bares de tapas y restaurantes que ofrecen comida típica de la zona.Otra ruta, hasta ahora no asfaltada, es la carretera de Frigiliana a Competa, que pasa por la aldea El Acebuchal (S. XVII), la cual se encuentra en la frontera entre Competa y Frigiliana. Las vistas son estupendas, pero si no están acostumbrados a conducir por el campo, quizás lo mejor es utilizar una de las carreteras principales. A pie, el recorrido es fácil – más o menos 4 horas. La aldea pertenece al término municipal de Competa pero está más

cerca de Frigiliana. El punto más emblemático de Competa es la Iglesia de La Asunción, que data del siglo XVI, cuya cúpula dorada domina el pueblo. El interior de la iglesia fue reformado con motivo de la celebración del Año Jubilar en 2005, coincidiendo con el 500 aniversario de la iglesia. Si sube a su torre verá las espectaculares vistas que abarcan desde la Axarquía hasta Gibraltar y el norte de África si el día es muy claro; con la bonita plaza Almijara a sus pies es un buen sitio para sentarse y contemplar el mundo.Visite el Museo del Vino, con su amplia gama de productos locales; y el lagar en la Plaza de Vendimia, donde se pisan las uvas en la Noche del Vino el 15 de agosto. El evento es una fiesta de interés turístico nacional de Andalucía y merece una visita.

El pueblo ha conservado su ambiente mudéjar, con un laberinto de calles estrechas, algunas de ellas aún adoquinadas y con muchos rincones que explorar. Venga un fin de semana a las montañas. Disfrute del ambiente, el aire libre, la gastronomía, la cultura, la tan famosa hospitalidad de los competeños... y sobre todo del vino. n

Los teatros, templos y acueductos son prueba viva de su paso por la zona.Actualmente Almuñecar es uno de los centros turísticos más atractivos e importantes de la Costa Tropical. Sus aguas ofrecen las mejores condiciones para las actividades acuáticas como el submarinismo donde la riqueza marítima es un verdadero tesoro para los ojos.Desde la playa Cristobal se puede ver a
