standards high, without compromise, when they go off to college and to be aware of their own ability to make wise choices based upon those self-imposed standards. Mr. Ippolito's unique approach is the result of a combination of "book" knowledge of drug toxicology and his first-hand experiences in the arrest of over 1500 narcotics related individuals. Mr. Ippolito has been a presenter of this type of training to students, parents, community groups, casinos and police departments.

Schooltube is a national website where video production students from across the nation post their work to be evaluated by their peers, educators, and industry professionals. A segment about “Driving Distractions” has been selected as a “featured video”. The video competed with literally thousands of posted segments from high schools throughout the United States. Mr. Trauger and Mr. Wheeldon are proud of their students‟ work and wanted to share their honor with the rest of our OCHS family. Log onto www.schooltube.com to see their work!

SADD, which stands for Students Against Destructive Decisions, prepared a PowerPoint explaining the importance of living a healthy, substance free life. The danger of smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, and taking illegal drugs was emphasized in the presentation and included facts and statistics about each topic. After the presentation, SADD members spent one on one time with the fourth graders. They helped the students assemble holiday crafts and gifts for their parents which demonstrated their pledge to live a substance free existence.

Advisors Debbie Cathcart and Pam Wilson are grateful to Ms. Mallas for allowing the high school students to visit her classroom.

On Thursday, January 7, students from Ocean City High School auditioned for Playtoe Records. Mr. Paul Bennett was here to listen to the talent of Katelynn Shoemaker, Levin Gibbs, Nigee Neiman, Alyson Roberts, Ample Stem, Last Try, and 123Draw. From here, one or more of these individuals/bands will move on to a Show Case performance at the PAC in Middle Township. The winner of this Show Case will have the opportunity to work with the established Record Label, Playtoe Records. The premise of this contest is to show young adults that you can be in the entertainment business substance free. On Friday, January 8, Mr. Tym Cox took a group of students to the OC Community Center to perform jazz music for the Mayor‟s Reception.

Project Haiti Psychology Club and Leadership Club will be collecting change in the cafeteria and at the front doors at the beginning of each day. We plan to do this for the week of February 8 and possibly the week of February 15th. Goal…to collect as much money as possible and donate it to our local branch of the Red Cross

Leadership Club and Student Council are going to send letters to business people to see if they want to sponsor one of 2 basketball games – 2/2 or 2/4 at a suggested cost of $50.00. In addition, we are asking if anyone would like to donate $5.00 for each 3 point basket made those evenings. We are planning to have a table in the lobby with information about Haiti. There will be a drop bucket there if anyone would like to contribute. The goal is to raise money for the victims of the Haiti earthquake, particularly the orphanages. Clothing Drive for Haiti – The OCHS Student Council is hosting a clothing drive through the Salvation Army for the victims in Haiti. We are collecting the following: pants, shorts, tees, shoes, and tank tops. All donations can be dropped off in the big box in the main lobby. Our Goal is to help those in need over in Haiti by collecting as much clothes as possible.

Lima Beans and Drawstring Bags for Haiti Students and staff are making small drawstring bags for families in Haiti. At our first workshop over 90 students attended and we made 143 bags! This Friday all of the International Crafts classes are making these bags. The more bags we make the more mouths we feed! Each bag will hold a bunch of Lima Beans (high in nutrition and fastest growing beans). These new beautiful pocket size drawstring bags that the students create will hopefully bring a smile to the individual, knowing that they cared enough to send their love. Goal:

To help re-establish the family garden and to help feed the wildlife

The more bags we make the more people and animals we feed!

To provide a small handbag for future use

To Unite - Bring sunshine- and Warmth to our friends of Haiti! We are working with the Farmers to Farmer organization „Partners‟ www.partners.net along with a few local churches. Each organization will take lima bean bags to their respective place in Haiti and deliver them to the families. At a recent meeting for the Partners The lima bean idea was presented to two men who are botanist who teach at Rutgers. They are our representatives with Farmer to Farmer for NJ Haiti Partners. They thought it was a sound idea from a botanical, practical, and educational point of view. They have worked in Haiti and of course they know botany & education. They were excited. The Partners also support a program of teaching raising rabbits. Rabbits are a very efficient method of producing the most food with the least impact on the economy. I suggested that the beans could be delivered to the same farms where the rabbit programs are being developed. The lower large leaves & the pod can be used for rabbit food while the limas are people food. They told me that the current rabbits are developing eye weakness because they are not getting enough fresh green in their diet. Win! Win!

STUDENT OF THE MONTH

Each student was chosen to be Student of the Month because of exemplary behavior, character and performance. We appreciate the support of each of the community organizations. There is a critical connection between a successful public high school and a strong relationship with its community.
