They come in many varieties, such as unwanted thoughts of harm befalling self or others, thoughts of death, violent thoughts, sexual thoughts, taboo thoughts, thoughts about being evil or immoral, fears of contamination, and impulses to do something inappropriate, to name just a few. In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), these normally occurring intrusive thoughts become more and more intense and frequent (i.e., they become “obsessions”) that cause distress. To reduce this distress, individuals may react by trying to ignore or suppress intrusive thoughts. They may also try to neutralise them with some other thought process, compulsive action, or ritual. This may offer temporary relief, but the more those reactions are performed, the more the intrusive thought feels real, the greater the distress, and the bigger the urge to act on it gets. OCD – Understanding and Managing Intrusive Thoughts Information Session

Thursday 18th October 2018

Given the way our human brains are wired up, most if not all human beings experience weird, strange, immoral, inappropriate,

unwanted, perverse, terrifying, horrific, anxiety-provoking thoughts, images or impulses from time to time, AKA ‘intrusive thoughts’.

They come in many varieties, such as unwanted thoughts of harm befalling self or others, thoughts of death, violent thoughts, sexual

thoughts, taboo thoughts, thoughts about being evil or immoral, fears of contamination, and impulses to do something

inappropriate, to name just a few.

In Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), these normally occurring intrusive thoughts become more and more intense and frequent

(i.e., they become “obsessions”) that cause distress. To reduce this distress, individuals may react by trying to ignore or suppress

intrusive thoughts. They may also try to neutralise them with some other thought process, compulsive action, or ritual. This may

offer temporary relief, but the more those reactions are performed, the more the intrusive thought feels real, the greater the

distress, and the bigger the urge to act on it gets. The more we struggle with intrusive thoughts in this way, the more we are pulled

into the quicksand of OCD.

In this talk I will offer psycho-education and tools that you can use immediately to help you manage intrusive thoughts without

getting stuck in any kind of quicksand. I will draw on research on intrusive thoughts as well as evidence-based treatment approaches

to OCD.

People may be scared or ashamed of their intrusive thoughts and suffer alone in silence. Group seminars such as this one allow us

to see that there are others going through the same difficulties, which can quickly transform isolation into self-acceptance,

connection, and common humanity. Hope to see you there!

Drawing on evidence-based therapeutic modalities for the treatment of OCD, I will cover the following topics:
