“Fight Cancer with the Dames”
Royal Ladies,
Every day it seems like you hear “someone has cancer or their cancer has
returned”. Then you get a special day when someone tells you their Doctor said
all their tests are clear or they are cancer free. What a stressful way of life to have
your health on the line every time you go for a check-up. Every test you take
throws your head into a tail spin, is it ok, is it not. Your family is also stressed by
being in this fight with you. The stress can be overwhelming. My heart hurts with
them. You can help with a kind word and a smile, never give up. When is this
going to stop! It can and will with the help of each Ocala Royal Dames Volunteer.
We all have people who feel so comfortable talking with us about what’s
going on in their lives. They share their feelings with us, some are going thru
cancer or they are in remission. We encourage them to be strong and keep the
faith. If you give your friendship it can make a difference in someone’s day. you
will be blessed in return.
The Royal Dames do make a difference and cancer research is on the right
track. We must continue to help fight this powerful disease. We need YOU our
Volunteers to get in the game and help with our mission.
Congratulations to Our New Royal Ladies, Dr. Erin Dunbar, UF/Shands , Dr.
M. Catherine Lee, Moffitt Cancer Center and Judy Flickinger, R.N. Volunteer -
Hospice of Marion Co. Thank you to our “Women of Hope “ Chairman Lydia
Kuttas and Co-Chair Suzanne Smith, all who volunteered to make this a special

WOMEN OF HOPE LUNCHEON
On July 13th, 100+ guests enjoyed a delightful luncheon at the Hilton Hotel. It was an occasion to honor three very special women in our community for their outstanding efforts in the fight against cancer. President, Nancy Porter conferred the title of Royal Lady upon Dr. Erin Dunbar, a UF/Shands Brain Surgeon and a 2010 and 2011 Royal Dames research grant recipient, Dr. M. Catherine Lee, Breast Surgeon at Moffitt Cancer Center, and Judy Flickinger, R.N. a volunteer at Ocala/Marion County Hospice. Each received a special pin/necklace designed by Nancy Porter, that will remind them of our admiration of their accomplishments.
Our Speaker, Dr. Johnathan Lancaster had car trouble on the highway and Dr. Catherine Lee stepped into his shoes and did an admirable job enlightening the audience of Moffitt's cancer facility. She expounded on her breast cancer patients and some of the new methods of surgery and recovery. One of these methods was implanting radiation technology into the patient while in surgery. It is proving valuable to the patient who is a candidate for this method and these patients had no side effects. Mrs. Flickinger's insight into hospice care was most enlightening.
The table decorations as well as the invitations and Program Book were in a black and white theme. The vases holding the "Thousand Stars" baby's breath were made by Lydia. She wrapped one pound tin cans in black and white ribbon with an accent ribbon in black with white polka dots. Ladies, you can do this for any season or occasion. Virginia Gamble donated a black and white dessert basket for our raffle. How fitting!
Munroe Regional Medical Center sponsored the entire event for the second year, so that all monies raised (almost $9,000) will go directly to research in our immediate area. Committee: Lois Johnson, my Co-Chair, Suzanne Smith, Chris Hildner, Jody Micilcavage, Lori Benz, Donna Crippen, Corinne DeVault, Carol Emmett, Patti Hunt, LaVerne Hope, Patricia Jordan, Nancy Karlson, Bernadeth Paraiso, Lois Price, Phyllis Silverman.
Until Next Time,Lydia Kuttas
