Oct IZCapt John Joshua Nathaniel Webber who was the executive officer of the ironclad Monitor during the memorable fight- In Hampton Roads with the Merri mac in 1864 died at Sailors Snug Harbor one night last week He was the last of the officers of the vessel which was the forerunner of modern navies The old seaman had been at the In ¬ stitution for more than fifteen years having been admitted on June 6 1894 He was eighty old The cause of his death was cardiac asthma Like others of the crew of the Monitor Capt Webber had long ago dropped from sight Not eyen the government records gave any trace of him after the entry honorably dis ¬ charged had been made opposite his name Although he had navigated the Monitor during the greater part of her career and had handled during the fight with the Merrimac In such a masterly way as to win honorable mention from his govern- ment ¬ he led a retired life keeping himself constantly from the public eye His crony and most intimate friend during the last few months of his life was an officer of the Confederate navy Lieut Duncan Johnstone also a navigating officer whose skill as a mariner was pitted against that of Capt Webber in several conflicts In fighting over again a number of en- gagements ¬ the two became sworn friends Capt Webbers onetime foe was his principal mourner Soon after Lieut Johnstone entered- the two men became acquainted thru- a remark the former Confederate made derogatory to Captain Buchan- an ¬ the commander of the Merrimac Capt Webber stoutly defended his oldtime foe and paid a high tribute to the latters ability as a sailing master Lieut Johnstone delights- now In telling of the argument t that ensued Capt Webber maintained that the Merrlmao with any other navigating officer than Captain Bu- chanan ¬ would have been forced Into shallow water luring the maneuver Ing and would have been unable to escape to Norfolk Capt Webber was born In Brook- lyn ¬ on Aug 3 1829 and his first trip to sea was made on the brig Osprey with his father mother and sister when he was three years old His second voyage was to the East Indies Whenho was nine years old At the age of sixteen he shipped before the mast and three years later when nineteen years old he was third of fleer of a ship engaged In opium smuggling in China This ship en- cOuntered ¬ Chinese pirates but escap- ed ¬ He left the vessel at Calcutta A few days after he left the ship she was lost in a typhoon in the Indian Ocean teventally he became first officer of the fullrigged ship Harvest Queen While this ship was off Liverpool on the way to America with twentyone passengers she encountered a gale and twelve of them were washed ov erboard When the Monitor was built Capt Webber joined the United States Navy and became her master He was In naval service for one ye r- and six months He reentered the mercantile marine service sailing un- til ¬ 1870 when he retired Capt Webber is survived by a son A E Webber No 204 Starr street
