Discuss, “What does 3-DIMENSIONAL (3D) mean?” Explain that 3D means that the shape can be filled with something. 2-DIMEN- SIONAL (2D) means the shape is flat. Look around your home or outside for 3D shapes. Discuss what they hold, or could hold, inside of them. “Is this shape 2D or 3D? How do you know?” Lay out all of the 3D Memory cards so the Zeno logo is face up. Have your child start Round 1 by turning over 1 card. Ask your child about the shape on the card. “What shape do you think that is? Tell me about what it looks like.” Turn over a second card. Do they have a shape match (for example, the basketball and sphere)? If they match, put them in your match pile. If they do not match, continue Round 1. Flip cards over until you find the match! Then, try to find the matching 3D shape block. “How did you know that was a match? How are the shapes alike?” OR “How did you know that was not a match? How are the shapes different?” Start Round 2 by making sure all of the cards are turned over so that the Zeno logo is face up. Look for another match each round. Take turns and keep playing until all the cards are matched. “What makes that shape 3D?” OBJECTIVE: Your child will start to recognize 3-DIMENSIONAL shapes (3D shapes can hold something inside of them) and 2-DIMENSIONAL shapes (2D shapes are flat). 1. 2. • Try playing again, but follow these rules instead: Turn over any 2 cards. If the 2 cards match, keep them. If they don’t match, turn them back over and let the other player start their turn.

• Once you find a match, find the matching 3D shape block.

“How do you know these are the same shape?”

• Use the 3D shape blocks to help your child see the difference between each 3D shape.

• Look at 2 different 3D shapes and ask about their similarities and differences.

“What is similar about the cube and rectangular prism? What is different?”

• Gather shapes from your surroundings. Decide whether a shape is 2D or 3D.

• Organize the shapes into 2 piles: 2D shapes and 3D shapes.

• Count the shapes in each pile and decide if you have more 2D or more 3D shapes.

“What makes this shape 2D?”“What makes this shape 3D?”

• Throughout your day point out different shapes that you see around you.

• Ask your child if the shape is 2D or 3D.

“Where do you see shapes during the day? Do you think you see more 2D or more 3D shapes through-out your day?”
