Social and Emotional Characteristics:● Imaginary audience comes into play

○ they feel like they are always being watched, become very self-conscious (Anthony, 2011)

● peer groups are very important● trying to discover themselves while still

being accepted by large group (Anthony, 2011)

Social and Emotional Characteristics● These things will make students very

anxious about getting approval of their work.

● Projects revolved around self discovery and self expression are good for this age group

● Allows kids to discover and express themselves and be individuals without drawing attention to themselves (Clements, 2006)

Cognitive Development● Students best learn aurally and

kinesthetically (Allen, 2012 p. 5)

● Teaching art strategies to this age group:o Famous art pieces to attempting their own

version (Liberty, 2013)

crisis, where they try to draw realistically and get frustrated when they do not have the skills to do it

● Don’t hang student’s work unless the students feel proud of their work and want it to be displayed (Clements, 2006)

with their names● They also have very fine motor skills,

so they can do more advanced projects● Wire and metalworking are also fun

projects for this age
