Oak View is a densely populated, low-income community in Huntington Beach, formerly called Slater Slums.

Several nonprofits have formed with a mission to address the education, health and safety, and economic sustainability needs of these residents.

Education: Since 1997, the Oak View Elementary School test score have increased from 421 to 760.

Health: The childhood obesity rate has dropped from 38 percent to 23.6 percent.

Housing: The average household size in the community is 5.8

Public Safety: Crime has increased from 239 crimes per 10,000 people in 2007, to 436 crimes in 2011

One day Oak View may serve as a model for enhancing and improving other low-income and at-risk neighborhoods.
