NWCT Board of Directors

When we approached Milo Mowery and Rodolfo Ortega, the creative team behind

last year’s award-winning steampunk Pinocchio, we knew their ideas for adapting

Snow White would be unique. When collaborative discussions landed on anime as

a possible form to emulate, its global popularity, multi-cultural infl uences and

innovative rules (or as some would argue, “lack of rules”) for storytelling seemed

a natural fi t for Portland audiences.

In seeking to defi ne ‘anime’, we usually rely on describing its emphasized

visual style. But it can be expressed much more broadly than this. Anime, with

its worlds of heightened reality, larger-than-life characters, explosions of

ethereal color and fantastical storytelling provides an inspiring backdrop for

contemporary adaptations. Blended mythologies, epic stakes of good and evil,

courageous youngsters on a search for the truth at all costs- these elements are

what make anime one of the most emulated postmodern art and storytelling

movements in recent decades.

Though infl uenced by a Japanese art form, our production of Snow White also

features the traditional elements of the Grimm Brother’s original story. Snow

White is the heroine, along with her sister Rose Red. There is a vain Queen

and her mirror, an unwitting huntsman, and of course a poisoned apple. The

traditional story takes a turn as seven dwarves are represented as Seven Spirits,

and the score pulls from everything from pop to Calypso. As in anime, there is

eastern and western inspiration; neither place, period nor nationality is stated,

which allows for discovery through common links in the story, characters and

cultural comparisons that speak to audiences of all ages and backgrounds.

To quote Hayao Miyazaki, Academy Award-winning anime director, “There are

more profound things than simply logic that guide the creation of the story.” In

this case, anime provides a freedom that makes all things possible. We hope you

enjoy the journey as much as we have.

Anime‘Anime’ is the word used to describe a form of

Japanese animation. Wildly popular in America

today, anime comes in many forms. Feature

length movies, cartoon series and comic novels

called ‘manga’ all use visual elements of anime,

with emphasis on exaggerated colors, physical

characteristics and dramatic speech and music.

Here are some ways our show brings the style of anime to the stage:

CHARACTERS & PLOT Recognizable humans

SOUND DESIGN Everything from solemn pipe

fl utes to crashing orchestration come together to

underscore the action, like in a movie, or even a

video game!

These days, anime and manga are very popular.

The movies “Spirited Away” and “Howl’s Moving

Castle” as well as cartoon series like “The Power

Puff Girls” and “The Last Air Bender” are well-

known titles. Do you draw, watch anime or read manga? Are there parts of our play that remind you of these styles?

Martial ArtsMartial arts are sometimes called the ‘art of

war’ or fi ghting arts. We use some of the forms

and poses from these styles in our dance and

fi ght sequences. Here are some descriptions of martial art styles:

JIUJUTSU a Japanese grappling martial art that

uses an opponents’ energy against him

KARATE a Japa nese st r i k i n g m a r t ia l a r t

consisting of hard-strength punches and kicks

KUNG FU a Chinese martial art encompassing

many styles, such as one rooted in the history of

the Shaolin temple

TAE KWON DO a Korean martial art known for

kicking skills and forms

CAPOEIRA a Brazilian martial art that evolved as

a fi ghting style in the guise of dance

MUAY THAI a Thai martial art similar to boxing

that emphasizes elbow and knee strikes

JUDO a Japanese grappling martial art known for

ground fi ghting techniques

NINJUTSU a Japanese martial art focusing on

Ninja weapons and unarmed combat techniques

TAI CHI a slow-form Chinese martial art practiced

for defense training and health benefi ts

Our show features a combination of several

m a r tia l a r t st yles a nd moder n da nce. Do you study martial arts or dance? Can you recognize familiar forms and movements in the choreography?

Taiko DrummingIn parts of our production,

actors play drums live on stage.

These moments in the play are

inspired by a form of Japanese

dr umming k now n as ‘taiko’.

The word ‘taiko’ means ‘drum’ in

Japanese. In ancient times, taiko

was used for lots of reasons, to

delineate village boundaries, scare

away invading armies and pests

in the rice fields, and to call the

community together in times of crisis

and of celebration. Here are the parts of a taiko drum:

Ko the body of the taiko

Fuchi the edge on top and bottom of the

taiko

Kawa the skin of the taiko

Byou the tacks that hold the skin onto the taiko

Bachi the taiko drum sticks

Taiko drumming is popular the world over, including right here in our own city with Portland Taiko, the premier taiko ensemble in the Pacifi c Northwest. To see some real taiko, check them out at portlandtaiko.org.

The audience is a very important part of any live theater performance. Without

you, there would be no one to laugh when the show is funny, to gasp when it is scary,

or to applaud at the end. But it is important to be a good audience member so that

everyone enjoys the show. Because this is a live performance, the actors will be right

in front of you. You should give them your respect and attention. Thank you!

Here are some things you can do to make this a great experience for all:

• Stay seated and listen quietly.

• Keep your feet on the fl oor.

• Save snacks and treats for after the show.

• Wait until the lights come up before you leave your seat.

IMPORTANT NOTICES FOR ALL:

• TURN OFF all watch alarms, beepers and cell phones prior to the performance. (No silent or vibrate; interferes with theater equipment.)

• If an infant is with your party, please be prepared to leave the theater if the child becomes disruptive.

• Use of cameras, video and audio recording equipment in the theater is strictly prohibited.

• Latecomers will be seated at the House Manager’s discretion.
