GRADE 12 HANDOUT IMPORTANT INFORMATION & DEADLINES

YEARBOOK INFORMATION FOR 2020 GRADS – PLEASE READ THIS CAREFULLY!

The information here is non-negotiable and all deadlines must be met – no exceptions.

Late submissions for anything will not be included.

Email all submissions to: [email protected]

Be sure to submit to the correct email address – several students last year sent their content to the wrong email address with a typo and were not included.

1) Grad Write-Ups and Baby Pictures are optional.

2) You only get a Grad Write-Up in the Yearbook if you have had a proper Grad Photo in a gown taken at

Artona.

3) If you do not get a proper Grad Photo with a gown, your Go-Card Picture will be used.

4) Grad Write-Ups and Baby Pictures for the Yearbook are due January 15th, 2020. No late submissions

will be included.

5) Grad Write-Ups can be a maximum of 400 characters including spaces, punctuation, letters, and

numbers (NOTE – that is 400 characters, NOT 400 words). Your Write-Up CANNOT have any

abbreviations, initials, slang, social media handles/websites, bullying, innuendos, or anything that is

inappropriate for a school publication. If you try to include anything that is not appropriate for a

school publication, you do not get to have a Grad Write-Up – it will simply not be included and you

will not have a chance to resubmit.

6) You have one submission – you cannot submit a Grad Write-Up and then change or resubmit it – this

causes too much chaos and unnecessary work for the Yearbook team.

7) Edit your Grad Write-Up and have several people proof-read it! It will be in print forever!

8) Baby Pictures must be submitted as a high-resolution jpeg. If you are scanning a picture, make sure

that you crop it and submit it in the proper orientation.

9) Submit your Grad Write-Up and Baby Picture TOGETHER IN THE SAME EMAIL. In the subject line,

include your full name.

10) Grad group shot will be taken at lunch on Tuesday, March 3rd at 12:50 pm in the Gallery. There will only

be one group shot taken this year – if you are not there, you will not be included.

11) PLEASE get your Grad Photo taken between December 18th-22nd, 2019 during the times set aside for

Handsworth Graduates. These dates are published in the school calendar. If you need retakes, this

must be done by Friday, January 31, 2020 and you will pay an additional sitting fee.

12) SHARE THIS INFO WITH ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS!! Too many late submissions did not get included last

year.

13) There are 2 sections to the Grad section of the Yearbook – make sure you read this carefully so that

you know where you will be placed in the book. See over.

There will be a wide range of clubs for them to choose from, such as the Ultimate Games Club, the Robotics Club, and more.

FRENCH 8 CLASSROOM SPOTLIGHT—MME. ABERNATHY

The French 8 students have been experiencing French

traditions and culture through their taste buds. Mme

Abernethy’s students learned how to describe cheese

in French based on their five senses just before Winter

break. They sampled seven different cheeses from

France and Canada, and learned about the way it is

made, the different types of crust that some of the

cheeses had and the different elements of how to taste

and describe them.

The French 8 students also were able to partake in a tradition that is celebrated in France and in

many other countries around the world. In France, this tradition is called Epiphany, it is celebrated

on January 6th and there is a food component to the festivities. The students tasted la galette des

rois, a flaky-pastry style cake with marzipan paste in it. There is a small ceramic figurine baked

into the cake, and the students all receive a small piece. The student who receives the figurine in his

or her piece becomes the king or queen of the class for the year. The winner wears a crown for the

rest of class.

HPAC NEWS

From the director of SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age com es Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER: Uncovering Skills for Stress Resilience and is about helping young people thrive in our screen and stress-filled world.

Filmmaker and physician Delaney Ruston uses a personal lens and professional eye to help us all flip the script on stress, anxiety, and depression. We follow Delaney as she finds herself at a loss on how to help her own teens as they struggle with their emotional wellbeing. Ruston sets out to understand these challenges in our current screen-filled society, and how we as parents and schools empower teens to overcome mental health challenges and build emotional agility, communication savvy, and stress resilience. We witness Delaney as she finds her way from ineffective parenting to much-improved strategies. We follow other personal stories of families from an array of backgrounds with a spectrum of emotional challenges. We also observe approaches in schools that provide strategies relevant beyond the classroom setting. Interwoven into the stories are surprising insights from brain researchers, psychologists, and thought-leaders that reveal evidence-based ways to support mental wellness among our youth. The impact of social media and other screen time is incorporated in all the topics raised Screenagers NEXT CHAPTER, how it may be impacting our teen’s mental health, and what we can do to help foster youth in the face of struggles. SENIOR BOYS BASKETBALL

BANTAM BOYS BASKETBALL

The Handsworth Senior Boys Basketball Team has gotten off to a very strong start this season. Our Royals are #4 ranked in BC AAAA and sport a 12-1 record. The team has recently competed in 3-16 team tournaments, making the championship game of the Kodiak Klassic eventually losing the final to #1 Burnaby South in addition to winning the No Regrets and North Shore Sweet 16 Tournaments.

In the New Year our team is travelling to Saskatoon for the 52nd annual Bedford Road Invitational Tournament. The tournament is a great piece of Canadiana where teams come from across Canada to compete. Our Royals have drawn into the opening game versus the host Bedford Road Collegiate at 12:30 pst on January 9th. Information and tournament results including streaming of all games can be found at britbasketball.net Go Royals 1 + 1 = 3

The boys started things off with a pre-season tournament at Carson Graham. The team worked hard to beat some tough competition, and ended up winning the silver medal! League play is now under way as the team continues to work hard and improve every day. After a well-deserved rest, league play picks up again in January and the team will continue to battle for the North Shore championship. Go Royals.

STUDENT COUNCIL

Happy New Year and Decade. Welcome back, from Student Council!

I hope everyone enjoyed their winter break, as we return into the rhythm of school, the Student Council is preparing many activities for this coming January. First here is a recap of what happened in December. For only $1 students and staff were able to send their friends and colleagues a candy cane on December 19th. This fundraising event will assist with upcoming events in the coming months.

On December 20th Student Council hosted our annual Santa’s Fair. In addition to offering breakfast and some festive activities to our school population, the grade 8s and our feeder school grade 2s were treated to a free breakfast and or snacks. While our grade 9-12s paid a $5 fee, they received a hearty breakfast including waffles, bacon, fruit and hot chocolate. This year’s theme was A Charlie Brown Christmas. In the drama room we played the themed movie and in our gallery and cafeteria, activities included singing/carolling, musical performances, dance performances, time with Santa and his elves as well as many crafts organized by our school clubs in our school’s gallery.

Here we are now, in a new decade …and January 22nd is CLUB DAY during Flex and lunch time in the gallery. This event will showcase our new and existing clubs. All students will be welcomed to take a self-guided tour. These student-created clubs will host individual information booths about their club, and any student interested in joining a club, will have an opportunity to do so. There will be a wide range of clubs for them to choose from, such as the Ultimate Games Club, the Robotics Club, and more.

All students who are interested in creating a club before the Jan 22nd CLUB DAY event are asked to speak with Graham Best. He is this year’s Club Coordinator at [email protected]

Now that our grade 8’s have settled into high school life, we encourage them to have a second look at our clubs. Grade 8s should know that membership in a club, a team or a volunteer group, is guaranteed to enhance any students experience during their high school years. The benefits are endless, from making multi-grade friends, to helping our community thrive, to just having more fun.
