Upon completion of the On-line Nursing Specialized AdmissionsOrientation, you will need to complete a quiz. An 80% passing rate is required to continue. Once you have successfully completed the quiz ,you can download the Nursing Specialized Admissions Orientation Certificate of Completion form.

Nursing programs have Specialized Admissions requirements in addition to the college’s standardadmissions process.

Some of these requirements are mandated bystate or federal legislation. Others are based on the standards set by accreditation agencies.

Effective June 2013 you will need to take the TEAS Version Vassessment and meet minimum scores to qualify and rank.

The information provided in this Nursing Specialized Admissions Orientation reflects the proposed changes for qualification and ranking effective for June 2013 for nursing applicants.

Effective June 2013 Ranking

BIOL 2420 -Microorganisms and Disease will no longer be a ranking course.

BIOL 2420 –Microorganisms and Disease will continue to be a degree requirement for the Nursing Associate of Applied Science degree and will:

have a 10 year limit be a course prerequisite to second semester, RNSG 1441.

This criteria is a competitive two part process:Specialized Admissions criteria will be applied in accordance to the current college catalog at the time of ranking.

First part requires that you complete all general requirements, program specific requirements, assessment and mandatory course work.

Second part is the ranking of qualified applicants.Ranking is based on most recent TEAS Version V scores and grades received on the specific program ranking courses.

o Students need to successfully complete a mandatory Health Careers Orientation –On-line and• download a Health Careers Specialized Admissions Orientation Application to declare a Nursing

major. • submit completed Health Careers Specialized Admissions Orientation Application, along with a $10

application fee paid at the Cashier’s window, to :VV Campus , 919 Hunter, Student Services Building

Admissions Office , SSC 039 or SSC 005 o A student’s primary major will be declared as Associate of Arts until official acceptance into their

nursing program is received.o Students may declare up to two secondary Health Careers majors

NOTE: The Health Careers Orientation provides general qualification and ranking information for most Health Majors except Nursing. Information concerning the ACCUPLACER assessment is not applicable to nursing applicants. As you proceed with this on-line Nursing Specialized Admissions Orientation you will see the information pertinent to nursing applicants.

Complete any course prerequisites as indicated in the degree plan

If applicable, must meet meningitis immunization or booster as requiredby The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board effective Spring 2012.

A minimum grade of “C” or higher is required in all academic and specialized nursing courses

TEAS-Version V Test of Essential Academic Skills

Taking all subject areas or a portion of TEAS Version V will

count as ONE attempt

Effective June 2013 ranking

All four competency levels must be met.Reading, English and Language Usage, Math, Science

Students have the option to take one

subject area at a time or all subjects together.

Students may re-test every 45 days

A 12 month period is defined as one year from

the student’s first attempt at taking the

Students can test and/or re-retest a total

of four times per 12 month period

If a student is unsuccessful after their

fourth and final attempt , they will need to sit out for one year and re-qualify for

ranking.

Official scores will be available in Banner 48

Only the most RECENT test scores will be used

Mandatory courses must be successfully completed prior to ranking Mandatory courses require a “C” or higher in order to qualify for

ranking and entry into the nursing programs

The mandatory courses for RN and VN Nursing programs are: BIOL 2401, BIOL 2402, RNSG 1301 and MATH 1314 or MATH 1324or MATH 1342

The following mandatory courses have a 10 year expiration date BIOL 2401; BIOL 2402 and RNSG 1301

Mandatory courses cannot be substituted with the exceptionof a higher level Math

Applicants who do not successfully complete mandatory course work will not be eligible for ranking.

Once applicants satisfy all Specialized Admissions requirements, including: General Admissions requirements Pre-Program Specific requirements Mandatory course work Minimum passing scores on all areas of TEAS Version V assessment

Applicants will be placed in a qualified pool to be automatically ranked based upon individual performanceon the TEAS Version V scores and GPA of program specific Ranking Courses.

On specific ranking dates, during June and October, qualified students will automatically be ranked based on their on the TEAS Version V scores and GPA of Ranking Courses.

Effective June 2013 ranking:

60 % of points come from GPA of Ranking Courseswhich equals 720 maximum points.

40 % of points come from TEAS Version V scoreswhich equals 480 maximum points.

100 %= 1,200 points is the maximum possible ranking score

Effective June 2013 ranking has a 60% weight for Ranking Courses:

To determine the Factor for Ranking Courses, divide 720 by the Maximum possible GPA, 4.0 (all A’s on Ranking Courses =4.0 GPA) times the MaximumRanking Course hours = (11hrs. for both RN and VN programs).

Sample for both RN and VN Course Ranking Factor: 720 maximum points divided by (4.0 X 11 Hrs.) = 16.364 = Factor The Factor for Ranking Courses is set at 16.364

EXAMPLE: If you get 89 % on Reading, you would multiply the Test Factor of .12 X 890 to get your (106.8) points for the Reading portion of your Test Ranking Score

Specialized Admissions

Qualified ranked students who are the top candidates will be offered a seat.

Certified Acknowledgment Letter of Acceptance will be sent officially from the Specialized Admissions Office.

You will be given 10 days to respond to the letter.

Students must satisfy all Post-Program Specific requirements to gain a full acceptance and clearance for the clinical nursing course.

RN program accepts a maximum of 70 students each Fall and Spring semester (unless otherwise noted)

VN program accepts a maximum of 20 students each Fall and Spring semester(unless otherwise noted)

Specialized Admissions

1. Students declining or failing to respond to an offer of a seat into a Health Occupations program will be removed from the qualified

pool as an applicant for that program(s).

2. A student who has declined acceptance into a specialized program and desires to be

considered for other health majors, will be required to submit a change of major form with

a Health Occupations counselor.

3. After a student accepts a seat in a particular Health Occupations program, the student will then be removed from all other

existing health occupations pools.

4. Students who were not selected will remain in the qualified pool as long as they

continue to satisfy all current specialized and program specific admissions requirements

Your Criminal Background Clearances will be sent directly to the Dean of Nursing

There are two levels of Criminal Background Clearance< Level 1 includes all students < Level 2 is specifically for students who are already licensed or certified in any area

The Joint Commission which accredits healthcare facilities across the country enforced background screening in September 2004. Students in a healthcare field must now complete the same background check as hospital employees.

Registration for Nursing Clinical Courses

Upon successful completion of all Post Specialized Admissions requirements, and receipt of the Letter of Acceptance, you will be authorized to register for Nursing clinical courses.

Registration Process:

Obtain clearance from the Nursing Lab Assistant located in the Health Science Bldg., Room H 221, Rio Grande Campus

RN students will present their clearance slip to the Nursing Counselors at the Rio Grande Campus to register

VN students will present their clearance slip to the Nursing Counselor at the Mission del Paso Campus to register
