    Introduction

    Theory A

Start the learning line Function Machine. You will see the screen shown in figure 1.

You will be constructing function machines in the blank area. Each function machine starts

with an input box and ends with an output box.

Carry out the following steps to construct the function machine

    • Use the mouse to drag an input box, an add box and an output box to the right-hand field.

    • Move the arrow of the input box and attach it to the left-hand side of the add function.

Join the add function’s arrow to the output box.

    • Click on the number 3 of the add function and change the 3 to a 5.• Click on the input box and type in –2.

As you can see, the number 3 automatically appears in the output box.

There is room for more function machines in the right-hand field.

Here are two more functions. The number 3 is the input in both cases. In the first function,

you must first multiply by 4 and then subtract 7. In the second function, it works the other

way round. As you can see, the output is different.

    4 ICT 1 havo/vwo part 2

figure 1 On the left there is an input/output box and seven machines. You can drag them to the right-hand field and drop them there.

1 a Construct the following function machines and fill in the output for each of them.

b For each of the above functions, replace the input with -12 and fill in the output.

2 a Construct the following function machines and fill in the output for each of them.

b For each of the above functions, replace the input with 12 and fill in the output.

3 Use the computer to search for the correct input.

    Theory B

You can express a formula as a function machine. The formula

amount = 5 . number of hours + 18 is expressed by the function machine

As you can see, you can also type words in the input box. However, as you cannot enter

word spaces in the applet, the words “NumberofHours” are joined together.

Take care: the input is the number of hours

    the output is the amount.

Return to the book and complete exercises 48 to 51 included with the aid of the computer.

    The function

    divides the

    input by 2.

    Tables and graphs

The formula costs = 40 + 30u is expressed by the following function machine

Start the applet Function Machine and construct this function machine. Click on the box

labelled Table on the bottom left-hand side. A table representing the function machine will

appear on the screen. The table contains two columns, one of which represents the input u,

    while the other represents the output 30 . u + 40.

There is a relationship between the numbers in the columns that are opposite each other.

Click on one of the numbers. What do you see?

Click on one of the triangles in the table. What do you see?

Click on the bottom left-hand box labelled Graph. A graph window appears on your screen.

Drag the arrow of the output box and attach it to the graph window. The vertical axis does

not yet show the correct numbers. You can change the scale by clicking on the upward

pointing arrow in the graph window a few times. Check that you have the same result as

    shown in the figure below.

When you click on a number in the table, the corresponding point in the graph will be shown

    in pink.

Return to the book and complete exercises 64, 65 and 66 with the aid of the computer.

    Start the applet

1 Draw a shape with the left mouse button.

You can clean up the window with the

Delete button. Start each exercise with a

    clean window.

2 a Click on the buttons Axes and Reflect

along the x -axis and make a drawing.

    b What happened?

3 a Click on the buttons Axes and Reflect

along the y -axis and make a drawing.

b What happened? Which colours can you

    see in your drawing?

4 Make a drawing where you reflect along

both the x-axis and the y-axis.

5 Try using the button Reflect diagonally.

    Start the applet.

In the window you can see a ‘blockhouse’ on the left.

On the right you can see one of the six possible elevations.

Turn the blockhouse with your mouse until you have the correct elevation.

Click on OK and continue with the following question.

Note your score when you have completed 20 questions.

figure 4 The blockhouse has six elevations: the plan, the front, rear, right and left elevations, and the top view.

Start the applet. The screen shown on the

right will appear. You can build and break

    down ‘blockhouses’ with this applet.

You can look at and hide different elevations.

You can rotate your blockhouse in all

    directions with your mouse.

1 a Set the counter to 3 and build the

    blockhouse shown in figure 6.

    b Draw the plan.

c How many cubes can you remove

    without changing the plan?

2 Check that the counter reads 3.

A blockhouse consists of four cubes.

The elevation shown on the right is

both the front elevation and the right

side elevation. A number of plansare possible. Draw four of them with the

    aid of the applet.

3 Keep the counter on 3.

A blockhouse consists of eight cubes.

The plan and front elevation are

    shown in figure 8.

Draw the three right side elevations

    that are possible.

4 Set the counter to 4.

The plan and right side elevation of a

blockhouse are shown in figure 9.

a Assume that there are 16 cubes.

    Draw the front elevation.

b Assume that there are 7 cubes.

Draw the four front elevations that

    are possible.

5 Figure 10 on the right shows a blockhouse

and its plan. Each box in the plan shows the

number of cubes stacked on top of each

    other.

    a Fill in missing numbers.

b How many cubes can you remove

without changing the plan or the front

    and right side elevations?

6 Figure 11 on the right shows the plan of a

blockhouse. Each box again shows the

number of cubes stacked on top of each

    other.

a Draw the front and right side elevations.

b How many cubes can you remove

without changing the three elevations?c How many cubes can you add without

    changing the elevations?

7 A construction consists of a number of

cubes. Figure 12 shows the front and right

side elevations. The base consists of 16

    cubes.
