    Top tips

    1. Make the most of your time atUniversity by building a website,blogging and selling stuff.

    2. When you start freelancing it mayseem like it will never come together- but it will. Persevere.

    3. Ask as much as you can of yourtutors because you are on your ownfrom then on. Use the facilitiesavailable to you because you wontnecessarily have the time later.

    4. Think about sharing a studio insteadof going straight into working on yourown which can be very daunting.

    5. Never turn your phone off if youmiss a call and dont call back intime, the work may have gone tosomeone else.

    6. Speak to as many people as you can

    about your work.

    7. Continue to build and develop yourportfolio, and be prepared to adapt itwhen applying for commercial work.

    8. If you dont know the software youvegot to force yourself to learn it,because it is the tool that the majorityof freelance illustrators need to knowin order to send work off.

    The small print

    There is no doubt that working as anillustrator is very hard work and someaspects will not suit everybody. Many peoplecombine freelance work with part-time or

    even full-time employment. Try to exploreyour options while you are still able to do so,as this will help you find a path that suits youbest.

    Difficulties include:

    Long hours and a solitary workingenvironment.

    Having to learn all the aspects of selfpromotion and running a business.

    Not knowing when the next job iscoming through.
