Background The Nanyang Research Programme (NRP) is an NTU outreach programme for Year 5 and JC 1 students from the IP (Integrated Programme) Schools and Junior Colleges. Participants of the programme will undertake 8 months of research activities, either individually or in a pair, under the charge of an NTU faculty member. This programme will culminate in the submission of a Research Paper and a Presentation carried out during the NRP Symposium, held in April annually. NRP offers a variety of research topics from NTU’s four Colleges – College of Engineering, College of Science, College of Humanities, Arts, & Social Sciences, and College of Business – as well as the National Institute of Education.

NRP Project Categories The projects on offer will be banded by their broad areas of specialisation and classified into the following 3 categories:

This will allow for a clear alignment of the offered projects with NTU’s Colleges and Schools. With this categorisation, the NRP will now serve as the perfect platform allowing our Colleges and Schools to showcase their research specialisation and niche areas of research. In turn, these projects would offer up an invaluable opportunity for students to dabble, delve, discover and deepen their knowledge in the areas that interest them. Eventually, this stint would have hopefully piqued the interest of and wowed these students sufficiently for them to consider NTU as their University of choice, and Engineering and/or Science Research as a plausible career option.

The NRP Workflow NRP project titles will be disseminated to our partner IP Schools and JCs through the NRP Teacher Co-ordinator. Once applications are received, they will be handed to the respective project supervisors who can opt to contact student applicants to arrange for an interview prior to the Supervisor’s final selection. Only students who have had their applications endorsed and recommended by their school will be considered.

Offering NRP as H3 Science Research Year 5 and JC1 students taking the GCE ‘A’ Level Examinations in Year 6 / JC2 can opt to offer NRP as an NTU-H3 Science Research project. Only projects in the Engineering and Sciences categories can be offered as NTU H3 Science Research. This is subject to endorsement from the student’s school as well as the NRP Supervisor, and approval from the MOE. Students who opt to offer their project under the umbrella of H3 Science Research will be awarded a GCE ‘A’ Level certified by the Singapore Examinations and Assessment Board (SEAB). The H3 Science Research grade will only be made known during the release of GCE ‘A’ Level results the following year.

Students who wish to offer their NRP project as a H3 Science Research project are to indicate their decision at the point of application for a place in the NRP. However, NTU will base all offers primarily on the recommendations made by the School. If the School has 'Recommended' a student for NRP Enrichment only, NTU will make the student an offer of NRP Enrichment only, even if the student has indicated on his/her application form that he/she wishes to offer his/her project as H3 Science Research. Two other considerations however can possibly supersede the School’s recommendations: a) Whether the project clearly articulates upfront that pairwork is a requirement - this would automatically

mean that the project cannot be converted to H3 Science Research as the latter necessitates that students work on their projects as individuals;

b) The Supervisor is of the opinion that the student is better suited to work on the project as NRP Enrichment only.

Do note that once an offer of NRP Enrichment has been made, the student will NOT BE ALLOWED to convert his/her project to H3 Science Research. If the School has recommended a student for H3 Science Research, NTU will make an offer of H3 Science Research to the student unless one or both of the two conditions (a) and (b) (above) apply. H3 Science Research students will be asked to confirm their decision to continue offering the project as H3 Science Research in July and will be given formal confirmation / approval in August. An application fee of S$60 will apply once an acceptance of the confirmation has been received. Students who withdraw from H3 Science Research after the add-drop period will forfeit the application fee. Students will also have an “Absent” grade reflected on their ‘A’ Level certificate. Students may however still opt to continue with their project under NRP Enrichment after having withdrawn from H3 Science Research.
