NTF Sustainable Forest Management Plan - Public Advisory GroupFieldtrip to Lillooet September 26, 2012

Attendees: Rick, Bert, Leona, Bill, Rob, Liz, Heather, Jan, Aline, Graham, Andrea, Alan, Chris, Kim North

Photos by Alan Burger (thanks, Alan!)

From Ministry office in Merritt to Lytton (to pick up Graham) and continued on to Lillooet

1st Stop – Lillooet Powerhouse Restoration Project Site Kim North – Lillooet Naturalist Society (tour guide)

-Elementary school kids were on site planting native plants grown in Cayoose Creek St’at’imc Community’s Splitrock Environmental Native Plant Nursery

Photo: Alan Burger

-Kim explained the degraded condition the powerhouse site was in prior to restoration work beginning

-BC Hydro Fish & Wildlife Compensation Program grants over a number of years allowed the Lillooet Naturalist Society, partnering with Cayoose Creek St’at’imc, to complete environmental restoration. A restoration ecologist was hired and he worked with locals (including youth) who gained employment, training and experience through the nursery, restoration and monitoring work.

-Next phase planned for powerhouse site is maintenance (continuing weed removal activities each year) and monitoring

Photo: Alan Burger

-Seton River Corridor is next area being eyed for restoration work (between powerhouse site along Fraser River and Seton Lake) – Aspen Planers’ Veneer Plant located in this corridor along Seton River (Cayoosh Creek)

-Aim to improve riparian habitat and connectivity throughout corridor – current challenge is that corridor is extremely narrow with cliffs on either side, so a large number of human impacts are funneled through a narrow corridor (highway with two bridges over Seton River, rail line, powerline, hydro canal with wildlife exclusion fencing, hydro dams, recreation sites and campground, Aspen Planers’ Veneer Plant, and homes.) 2nd Stop – Lunch!

Page 5: NTF Sustainable Forest Management Plan - Public Advisory

3rd Stop – Blackhills proposed development area Bill Poppy, Aspen Planers staff member, Registered Forest Technologist [RFT]

- Planning process includes office review looking into known values prior to heading out to bush to ribbon out planned harvest areas

- Determining how to manage for objectives set by government using Forest Stewardship Plan (FSP) results, strategies, and measures regarding values such as Ungulate Winter Range, biodiversity, cultural heritage, Old Growth Management Areas (OGMAs), soils, and water.

Page 6: NTF Sustainable Forest Management Plan - Public Advisory

- Example map showed known Mountain Goat Winter Range areas and associated FSP results and strategy to manage for it, including timing of operations, access restrictions and retention of forest cover within 500m of “escape terrain”, or very steep areas that goats can go but their predators cannot, such as what we just saw on the drive up the Blackhills Mainline!

Page 7: NTF Sustainable Forest Management Plan - Public Advisory

- Bill described the veneer plant’s specifications and its product, high quality veneer that is used at the Savona Specialty Plywood Plant in Savona to create high value reusable “pourform” plywood that is used in the construction industry to build concrete highrises and other structures.

- The climate in the Lillooet area results in very slow-grown, tight ringed Douglas-fir trees which are what is needed to produce such high quality veneer – Bill described times when Ainsworth tried to bring coastal Douglas-fir to the plant to peel into veneer, and it was not as successful because the trees’ growth rings were not as tight on the coastal logs
