Supported Home Learning Overview & Resources English: SSP Below are some resources to help support your child’s learning at home with our Speech Sounds Pics (SSP) program. There are sound cards, high frequency words, decodable word lists and decodable word sentences. One list of words and sentences will be given per week, but keep these flash cards to use weekly with each list. Activities: • Cut out the sound cards. Use them as flash cards to practise the sounds or play a sound memory game. • Use the sound cards to make the words from the decodable word lists. Make them, duck hand the sounds, read the word, and then write the word. • Practise reading the high frequency words (sight words) • Practise reading the decodable sentences
Tips/explanations: • Remember to use the letter sounds NOT the letter names e.g The letter ‘e’ makes an ‘eh’ sound. • In SSP we break everything down in to sounds first then read it as a whole word e.g s – a – t, sat. • Different sounds in words are distinguished by alternating colours between black and grey e.g. s a t • Students use a duck hand gesture/action to assist them to break words into sounds. The duck hand begins with an open “bill” and the duck hand “quacks” (hand
closes) as a sound is said e.g s (quack/close) a (quack close) t (quack close). When all the sounds are said in a word, the closed duck hand goes back over the word as the word is said in full, sat.
• Even high frequency words (or sight words) are taught by breaking them into sounds, different letter combinations make similar sounds. On the flash cards provided, the sight words are broken in to their sounds and spelt phonetically in the corner to assist you to support your child.
• Some decodabe sentences have been provided, please use these as “home reading” and remember to duck hand the sounds first e.g. when reading ‘The ant and the pan’, students should say th – ur, the | a – n – t, ant | a – n – d, and | th – ur, the | p – a – n, pan | The ant and the pan. They break each word into sounds then read it as a whole word and finish by reading the whole sentence. Extension: students can write out one sentence a day.
• Duck handing words is a tricky concept at first, but keep supporting your child with this approach. It helps students to isolate sounds in words (beginning, medal, final sounds) and develops decoding skills (sounding out words). Keep an eye on Seesaw, I will send a video demonstrating the activities.
Please cut out the sounds and use them to assist your child’s learning.
