President’s Report Hello again members. I guess that some of you were scratching your head wondering what happened with the meeting last month? As you would have heard from the news reports that SA was nervous about another outbreak of COVID and restrictions were being put on larger gatherings. I was contacted by some of the committee members and I agreed that we should err on that side of caution and cancel the meeting. I did not want to get our name in the news for all the wrong reasons. SO!!!! Where to from here? We are hoping that the September meeting will go ahead as planned and we have an executive meeting on Thursday 19th to bring us up to speed with the changing requirements of having public meetings. We now have to have COVID Marshall’s to make sure that we all keep our distance and that the health issues are obeyed. Having said that, there has been a far bit of activity this month. The bike run was well attended and we had a brilliant day to cruise the back blocks of Barmera. Ian Mason contacted me and said that a group from Loxton had taken a run down to the lake and I also saw some Renmark members out and about as well. I did wave to David Kimber as he went towards Barmera but it looked like his consideration was on getting the T model truck to keep up with the traffic around him. The President’s run was well attended last week and we had 41 members and visitors travel to the National Motor Museum for the day. See report in this issue. We are going ahead with the Waikerie 2020 event in October and I am confident that this will be a great weekend. Because of state restrictions, we will not have any interstate visitors but there has been some interest from SA clubs to attend. Can I urge members to support this event so that we can get the numbers to make the weekend viable. By the time this issue goes to print, we would also have been on a local mystery run organised by Bill Brock. Should be another good day out. Please check the Facebook page for updates regarding club events and meetings and also check the web page. I look forward to seeing you all soon ENJOY THE DRIVE Warren

Profile : Tim Bennett I suppose my interest in things mechanical started at an early age and was probably an inherited interest. In his younger days my father had a red MGTC until I came along and two seats wasn’t enough and so he “upgraded” to a MGY. Dad was an electrical engineer who spent some of his spare time mucking around with cars, motorcycles and boats and I learned a lot from him. I grew up in Perth and my mates and I seemed to gravitate to Mk1 Cortinas when we got our licences in the early 1970’s. Perth was a pretty quiet city in those days, especially after about 11pm when the roads were perfect for fast trips around the suburbs. Those Cortinas certainly took a beating but stood up to it really well, even with the tacho needle going past the high beam warning light!! I joined the PMG as a trainee tech in 1973 and after 18 months basic training moved to Kalgoorlie in the WA goldfields. About the same time I purchased my first really cool car, a silver mink HK Monaro GTS. This is the first of the cars I really wish I still owned, but in the mid 70’s they weren’t all that highly valued. I enjoyed that car for a couple of years and then sold it to own a yellow ex pursuit XA Falcon. In those days the local councils were responsible for traffic enforcement and the Falcon was an ex council pursuit car. It was a 4 door fitted with a 302, toploader and LSD. After purchasing it I turned it into a fake GT with bonnet scoops, spotlights, paint and badges etc. Also fitted extractors and a big Holley. Made a lovely noise, even my wife Judy enjoyed driving it and making beautiful noise!! Unfortunately it eventually had to go and was replaced by more “sensible” cars as we purchased a takeaway food shop in Kalgoorlie and needed more cargo space, a boring XC wagon, 6cyl, three on the tree. We moved back to Perth in 1980 and in 81 I purchased a Diamond White 1970 GTV6 Capri to play with. In my youth my mates and I used to scour the used car yards to take second hand Capris for test drives when we owned the Cortinas. In those days they were considered pretty quick cars and I had always wanted one since then. It stayed stock until the mid 90’s when it received a spruce up. Some rust was cut out and a colour change to French Blue was made. A second hand V6 motor was purchased and modified and replaced the original V6. I competed in 3 WA Classic Rallys around this time and had a lot of fun with it. The Classic Rally was the forerunner of Targa WA, not as competitive, but great fun, a 3 day event that combined speed with navigation. My wife then pointed out that the Capri was starting to become a bit of a rarity and perhaps racing it wasn’t such a reat idea. It was than retired for a time and I raced a Mk2 GT Cortina in the Historic Touring Car class at Wanneroo (Barbagello) Raceway for two years. Great fun but a bit too expensive. The next car that caught my attention was the Triumph Dolomite Sprint, a workmate had one and I was very impressed with the speed and handling. I managed to purchase one with the idea of running it in the Classic Rally, however with the demise of the rally and work and family commitments it never happened, the car went to the back of the shed. Our son was heavily involved with go kart racing in the 90’s and on one trip to Geelong in 1998 to attend the Nationals we came through Renmark and took a 2 day trip on a Liba Liba houseboat and loved it. Two years later the Nationals were held in Mt Gambier and we had a slightly longer houseboat trip, and again loved it. After that we came to Renmark a number of times for summer holidays, mainly staying at the Riverbend Park and eventually bought a block in Paringa with the thought that Cont/Page 7

maybe we’d move here one day. Well that day came a bit quicker than expected, after 36 years with the PMG/Telecom/Telstra I left and joined IBM who gave me the opportunity to work from home. It was then (2008) we decided to move to the Riverland and build a house on our Paringa block. Eventually we moved all our belongings to Paringa and are now firmly established in the Riverland. After 2 years with IBM I officially retired from full time work, although I did do some grain classifying for Vitterra at the Paringa and Loxton silos for several harvests and also did some truck driving at Kingston for 2 vintages. We really enjoy the lifestyle here especially in the warmer months spending time on the river, skiing and swimming, although we do still have an apartment in Perth so that we can spend time with grandchildren when border restrictions allow!! I still have the Capri which I’ve converted back to original condition and take on club runs. The Dolomite is currently getting a restoration and I hope to have that on the road in the coming months. I’ve also joined the vintage bike group and join them on the monthly runs, although cheating with a modern bike. Judy and I have enjoyed some of the events organised by the Club, especially last year’s caravan trip to Victoria. It’s nice to mingle with people who share a common interest and it gives us a reason to take the Capri out for a blast as well. Looking forward to some warmer weather though!!!

Tim’s Capri and His Cortina The adventures of Paddy - Thanks Lawrie Paddy was driving down the streetin a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, 'Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass everySunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!' Miraculously, a parking place appeared. Paddy looked up again and said, 'Never mind, I found one.' Paddy was in New York .. He was patiently waiting and watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing. The cop stopped the flow of traffic and shouted, 'Okay, pedestrians.' Then he'd allow the traffic to pass. He'd done this several times, and Paddy still stood on the sidewalk. After the cop had shouted, 'Pedestrians!' for the tenth time, Paddy went over to him and said, 'Is it not about time ye let the Catholics cross?'

President’s Run President’s Run It was an early start for many and some missed out on their beauty sleep, but everyone who nominated to go to Birdwood made it to the starting point at Maggea at 8.30 am. Beautiful fine day after some great rain and everyone was ready to go. Even had a Labrador as a mascot for the day. James Copeland set the pace to Swan Reach In his Corvette and morning tea was had on the Sedan side of the river. It was a great drive through the countryside and a pleasant run into Mount Pleasant !! On arrival at the Museum, we had Marshalls organise our parking and we were thrilled that they allowed the classics to be parked at the front entrance. This allowed for some great photos to be taken. The museum staff were wonderful and ushered us in after all the safety precautions were taken care of. Once inside everyone spread out to learn more about the motoring history of Australia.Motorbikes, cars, trucks, stationery engines, replica garages and out back history was all on display. Colin Gibbs spent a bit of time at the Chamberlain 8 race car that was built by Chamberlain tractors in Perth. This was a 4 wheel drive prototype with a crazy design 2 stroke engine. Apparently the motor was not a roaring success. There was much interest in the history of Tom Kruse with his now famous Badger mail truck as well as the history of Holden in SA. A comment was made that it was good to see the cars that we used to drive as original. That is, a lot of cars on display are not concourse restored and are straight off the road. Some are on loan and others are owned by the museum. 5 hours is not enough time to really appreciate what is on display but it did wet our appetite to go again. Thank you to the staff for all the help and for having our club visit such an awesome place. Our lunch was catered by the Birdwood Lutheran Church folk and I can say that it was real value for money. A 2 course meal including hot apple pie. What more could you ask for ? Thanks to all who attended and supported the event this year.

Morning tea at Swan Reach ferry Club Cars at Birdwood Museum Lunch with social distancing Heavenly intervention - from Lawrie An Irish priest is driving down toNew York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut . The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car. He says, 'Sir, have you been drinking?' 'Just water,' says the priest The trooper says, 'Then why do I smell wine?' The priest looks at the bottle and says, 'Good Lord! He's done it again!'

RVCCC Club Run at Renmark, Paringa and Lyrup. July 12TH Sunday July 12th saw some 30 RVCCC vehicles collect at the Park in Renmark ready to participate in the first full RVCCC run for some months due to the Corona Virus stifling all group activities. After a ‘good old chinwag’ and a few cups of tea or coffee we were given a list of directions to follow. We didn’t have to necessarily follow these though as we could simply follow the car in front and hope they got it right. The route took us on a tortuous path through the backblocks of Renmark, then over the Paringa Bridge and through the newly developed area of Paringa onto the Sturt Highway. From here we had a straighter run to just before Yamba where we were directed onto Stanitzki Rd and followed this to the Lyrup turnoff. This gave the faster cars a chance to blow out a few spiders and cobwebs. On to Lyrup and the SS Ellen Park where everybody had a chance for socialization and lunch before heading home . A pleasing number of participants for our first club run for some time. Below are some photos taken by participants of some of the cars participating on the day. Allan Carthew

Historic Bikes

Historic Motorcycle Aug 2 Ride The weather can be a fickle mistress for motorcyclists, will it blow? will it rain ? which jacket? which gloves to wear? All of the above can test a rider’s resolve but no such conditions prevailed on August 2 for our monthly ride! Glorious sunshine and 220C did in fact entice eleven riders to Berri for a great day out! Along with the usual mix of modern machines it was pleasing to see three pre 50s British bikes defending the realm! Leading the charge was visitor Brenton Beal on his recently restored 1939 Triumph 5SE, which accompanied by Peter Angel , 1950 BSA A10 and my 1949 Triumph T 100 all enjoyed a trouble free run! We left the Senior Citizens car park a little after 1pm and rode out through Winkie, meandering the back blocks of Loveday via Thiele road, then onto Gilmour road, bringing us into Barmera for a regroup at the lake front . After a pleasant break we departed the lake and rode back to Berri via Glossop and enjoyed a coffee and chat at ‘River Jacks’ riverside cafe proving the social aspects of motorcycling are as important as the actual riding!
