Dear Friends,
Every morning on my commute I watch people busy with
many things in their cars. Men shave and women apply
makeup in their review mirrors, drivers sip from their travel
mug, eat breakfast and jockey for position. They speed, run
yellow lights, change lanes unexpectedly or drive with their
blinker on without a hint of turning. It seems everyone has a
phone in sight or in hand and it feels frantic and well-
orchestrated at the same time. Everyone is rushing to
somewhere, busy with many things while racing to their
destinations.
This past week, my husband drove me to the office.
Traveling down the same street as always, I discovered a
very large building that had been painted red without me
ever noticing. A gas station a little further along is gone, a
large hole in its place surround by a chain linked fence. I
was very surprised and a little confused. When did all this
happen? In that moment I realized how much we miss along
our ways when we are hurried and distracted.
Advent is a season to prepare, wait and hope. Advent is an
invitation to slow down and pay attention to God working in
our midst. In the same way that I missed the happenings
along my daily route, we often fail to see more important
things going on around us - in our families, at work, and in
our closest relationships. We miss opportunities to see
Christ at work in our lives or to be Christ for others. This
year, let’s focus on the season of Advent, and not just
preparing for Christmas with shopping lists and frantic
activity. Advent can be a time to slow down - to pray more,
notice things around us, listen to God and reevaluate our
priorities.
There are some resources available to help you in your
advent journey. In this bulletin, is a simple calendar of daily
ideas to celebrate advent. Maybe you can post it on your
refrigerator or some other prominent location. There are also
daily reflection booklets available in baskets at the exits of
the church or at the parish office. I invite you to set aside
time each day to focus on your relationship with God as we
‘wait in joyful hope’ for the coming of our Savior, Jesus
Christ. In this way, we will know Him more, and recognize
all that He is doing in our lives.
For me, advent will be spent changing my habits on the
morning commute. I’m trying to pay more attention to my
surroundings (safely, of course) and I’m praying for all of
the people around me whose journey has them frantic and
unhappy – whether it’s on their commute, or just in general.
Let’s continue to pray for one another!

CLOW--Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 10:30 a.m. Mass As we begin Advent, the season when we prepare to celebrate Christ coming into our world, we hear readings that sounds thematically similar to the apocalyptic readings with which we ended the
liturgical year. This is because we are not simply celebrating that Christ came to us once but preparing for him to come back again at the end of time. This week in Children's Liturgy of the Word, we discuss that point and how we need to wait patiently and watch attentively.
Kids Club: Wednesdays, 6:00-7:30 In Kids Club, we will be talking about Advent, how we celebrate, and what we can do to prepare ourselves spiritually for Jesus' entry into our lives.
