Newsletter NOVEMBER 2006 VOLUME XXVI NO.5 WWW.GLENDALEQUILTGUILD.ORG GENERAL MEETING: WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2006 7:00 PM One More Couldn’t Hurt! Guest Speaker Judy Leonard Judy Leonard, quilter, humorist and lecturer, began quilting just after her seventh child was born. Having two girls, and five boys, she wanted to make quilts for both of the girls’ beds first; the boys’ quilts came later. Judy tells us that these first two quilts are now in the Smithsonian, explaining that the custodians of the museum write her all the time to tell her how great the “Double-knit, velveteen, denim, silk, and polyester squares” work so well on their marble floors and statues! Who really knew what they were doing in those first years? “It was a good thing I waited to take classes before starting the boy’s quilts.” Judy says with relief. Today, with all the classes, books, quilt stores, and of course lectures there is no stopping her now! Judy tells us that her recent quilts have been a bit more successful. Her love of quilting has led to memberships in several quilt guilds. She is the Past President of the San Fernando Valley Quilt Association, Valley Quiltmakers and Glendale Quilt Guild. Judy’s husband of 48 years is worried that they might have to relocate to a new area with new guilds, but Judy just smiles and says “Don’t worry, I can commute!” Successfully running her own machine quilting business for twenty four years, Judy is now designing and selling quilts. She also creates unique wall hanging “Picture Quilts” to satisfy any décor. Judy has made picture quilts for each of her twenty grandchildren. They are a wonderful way to personally gift a loved one with their own history. The dresses that you will see at Judy’s program began quite innocently about 13 years ago. She said, “It was fun to make a dress for each monthly meeting to stimulate the love of quilting in others.” Each dress has a story of how it got started. Judy will inspire you to use your antique blocks, table cloths, hankies, table runners, feed sack material, and of course, quilting fabrics. Just when she thinks she has made her last dress, up pops a new wonderful fabric, perhaps with a theme, and well…… “One More Couldn’t Hurt!” So get ready to spend an hour with Judy full of continuous laughter and wonderful stories. cÜxá|wxÇà|tÄ g|wu|àáThe rain has come and the nights are colder, so the time is right to quiltaway. A photo of your quilt entry for the 2007 Show is needed in January. But, as many of you know me, I’ll still be adding 3D flowers to my quilt theday before the actual entry is due!

The pictures shown here are ofJane Sassaman and her quilt, aswell as of me wearing the jacket I

made using her fabric. Jane’s 2-day workshop wasreally great and well-attended. More pictures ofthe her workshop can be seen on Page 8.

In order to answermany questionsand set the recordstraight - I wasinterrupted whilewriting my tidbitsthis month by a trip to Huntington Hospital on Monday,October 16, where I was diagnosed with arterial fibrillationthat resulted in fluid in my right lung and severe swelling inmy left leg. Other than “old age” and too much thyroidmedicine, the doctors don’t have a reason for my suddenoverly active heart. The good news is we caught it before aheart attack happened! I came home Wednesday night, the18th, with no serious restrictions on my activity, a bunch of

prescriptions, a long list of required doctor follow-up visits and a few dietary limitations. My family and friends are trying to figure out some of the hen scratching on my calendar tocorral some of my activities. They want to make sure I take time for proper rest andexercise, and that I attend to my physical recovery regimen. In the meantime, I encourageyou to take advantage of the various workshops and mini-workshops offered by the Guild. The information is in our newsletter and hopefully will soon be included in our NEWrecently activated website, www.glendalequiltguild.org.

MORE HISTORY OF OUR GUILD PRESIDENTSJudy Leonard was GQG Guild President for two years, from 2002-2004.She was also the Quilt Show Chair for the 2006 Quilt Show, culminatingthe two years of preparation that are required to complete all thecontractual arrangements and the myriad details involved in putting on asuccessful quilt show.

She is currently touring around the countryside as a quilt guild speaker. This is why she has been missed at our meetings (in October she wasspeaking in the San Diego area). Judy will be our speaker at the regularGQG meeting on November 8th. Please join us as we laugh at her latestjokes and stories. The picture shows Judy in one of her creations whenshe was Banquet MC.

OOppppoorrttuunniittyy QQuuiilltt - Many thanks to Ann Hunter (still a faithful GQG member even though relocated inMassachusetts) for her generous gift specifically earmarked to help underwrite the opportunity quilt. How very special. As you know, the fabulous ladies of Las Pulgas created the center of our awesome quilt; but we also wish to extendthanks to the wonderful women who reverse appliquéd the unique papel picado border: Marva Packey, KoNakamura, Lisa Burroughs, Lorelei Snee, Charlotte Rose, Katsy Chappell, Kay Gong, Madeleine Bajaracharya, MaryEllen Sakai, Mary Ann Andrews, Ellyn Mosbarger, Leah Bessey, Doralee Dohnel, Pat Bauer, and Susan Edwards. Thequilt center has been beautifully machine quilted by Judy Leonard, and it is now off to Ko Nakamura and Marva Packeywho are working on the border. Please call Ko or Marva if you are able to help with the hand quilting.

The opportunity quilt tickets, which were generously donated by Jason Helscher’s Classic Distributing Company,(husband of Melinda) will be distributed to members at the November meeting. We will proudly display the finishedquilt at Road to California on Saturday, January 20, 2007, and will update you on our quilt’s travels as the scheduledevelops. Please help us show it in all the right places by suggesting venues and signing up to accompany it on its tour.

The annual “New MemberTea” was held September

30th at the home of GQGpresident Alice Smith. The party welcomingmembers who havejoined in the last year

was a lot of fun and gaveattendees a chance to

become acquainted withfellow members

in a casual atmosphere. Inaddition to the good foodprepared by Board Members,Founder of the the GQG,Carol Andrews, surprisedeveryone with a gift of herquilted tree skirt pattern.

A good time was had by all and hopefully newfriends were made along with lasting

memories. We wouldencourage all newmembers to jump inand participate inguild activities rightaway. The GQG hasa lot to offer foreveryone’s interestsand there are plentyof people to share

those interests with. See you at the nextmeeting and once again -

Welcome !

Recently, our Program Co-Chairs, Sue Viteand Katsy Chappell, went to San Francisco tosee the “Gee’s Bend Quilt Exhibit”. Here theyshare some of their photos and comments aboutthe trip.

“We took a weekend trip to the de YoungMuseum in San Francisco to see the Quilts ofGees Bend, as well as some of the quiltmakersthemselves: Mary Lee Bendolph, LouisianaBendolph, Florine Smith, Loretta Pettway,Qunnie Pettway, China Pettway, Nettie Young,Jessie Pettway, Lucy Mingoand LorettaBennett. (See accompanying photos.)

These women arefrom the smallr e m o t e b l a c kcommunity ofGees Bend inAlabama. Theyh a v e c r e a t e dt h o u s a n d s o fquilts. We heardwonderful stories of their lives, quiltmakingart and also attended their spiritual gospelconcert. These quilters don’t use patterns; andevery scrap of fabric and discarded clothing isrecycled. Their stitches are large and their

points are not perky; buttheir quilts are beautiful. Some of the most populardesigns are calledHousetop, Triangles, andLazy Gal. During the1970’s they used a lot ofcorduroy which wasleftover from duvet covers

they were commissioned to make for Sears.

The quilters of Gees Bend have made anAmerican past-time the literal fabric of theirlives. If any of you get an opportunity to seethis exhibit, we highly recommend it.”

(Details for the exhibit can be found on page10 “Calendar of Events”.)

Editor’s Note: The U.S. Post Office recently isued

a series of stamps featuring these quilts.
