Fall is my favorite time of year for several different

reasons, one of them being the final push for businesses

within their calendar year. The final few months bring a

host of holiday celebrations that our businesses thrive from

and events that foster partnerships within this community.

This time of year we also begin to evaluate the accom-

plishments of our current year and turn to planning for the

coming year. Last month your Chamber board, committee

leadership and staff met in a retreat setting to review the

past year and its challenges, and to discuss and plan for the

opportunities that lie ahead. We are often excited when

using the word retreat, however what excited me the most

about the day was the energy and enthusiasm from our

2016-2017 Board of Directors and Chamber staff. Thank you to everyone who respond-

ed to the membership survey. Your input and feedback gave us direction and a basis for

some productive brainstorming and planning.

October was a busy month for the Chamber, beginning with Business Expo. The

McNease Convention Center was abuzz with vendors showcasing their wares and

attendees excited and curious to learn all about them. Many thanks to all the Silver

Sponsors, Exhibitor’s Lounge Sponsors and Business @ Happy Hour Sponsors, as well

as auction donors who generously gave and made the Business Expo an event with 25

years of success.

It was a sellout crowd at last month’s membership luncheon as we gathered to hear

Mayor Dwain Morrison deliver the “State of the City” address. He expounded upon five

points of major accomplishments the City has realized. The luncheon was sponsored by

The City of San Angelo and Fort Concho National Historic Landmark, Eagle Safety

Management, KIDY FOX, and the Standard-Times.

The 34th class of Leadership San Angelo kicked off last month with a two-day

ROPES course and team-building sessions at the West Texas Boys Ranch. This class is

proving to be a great mix of individuals from many different industries in San Angelo

and they have already shown that they work well together. It promises to be a great class

of present and future leaders.

Here are some upcoming membership opportunities you won’t want to miss:

Join us for our Annual Diversity Awards Luncheon which will be held on Tuesday,

Nov. 8th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the McNease Convention Center, 501 Rio

Concho Drive. Our keynote speaker will be Anthony Ruiz, District Director from

the San Antonio Small Business Administration office.

The Nov. 15th Business Brown Bag luncheon topic will be “Fire Safety in the

Workplace” and will be held in the Visitor Center River View Room. Ross

Coleman, Fire Marshall, will be our speaker. There is no charge to attend, but you

must make a reservation by calling 655-4136 to hold your seat. You may also order

a $10 lunch or bring your own lunch. Business Brown Bag is jointly sponsored by

the Chamber, ASU’s Small Business Development Center and The Business Factory.

November’s Business @ Happy Hour will be held Tuesday, Nov. 22nd at the Elks

Lodge, 2121 S. Chadbourne St. from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.

I encourage each and every one of you to get out and vote on Election Day. It is our

duty and our privilege and certainly one of the things that makes this country great.

Let’s continue to do our part for not only our community, but also our country, as well.

Your success is our success and we want to continue to serve businesses in the

Concho Valley. With your partnership we can continue to develop programs that

provide advocacy, education and economic growth for San Angelo, Texas.

Sincerely,

Jamie Akin

Chairman of the Board

ACTION REPORT NOVEMBER 2016 PAGE 2

PAGE 3 NOVEMBER 2016 ACTION REPORT

As you may be aware, my wife Mary

and our three daughters spent the last

15 years in Overland Park, Kansas, a

suburb of greater Kansas City. One of

the most difficult tasks we had with

the move was deciding what house-

hold items we should and shouldn’t

take on our trek here.

Our San Angelo home doesn’t have

a basement or a “man cave.” So the

coin operated pinball machines,

foosball table, game table, etc., didn’t make the move. I know,

upsetting isn’t it? And the bulky children’s toys, strollers and

furniture we were saving for our children’s first home or

future grandchildren didn’t make the move either. Mary and I

both experienced a sad moment when the crib our three girls

slept in went to a new home. But we took comfort in knowing

it went to a young family in great need expecting their first

child. In the process, I learned “letting go” was often difficult

and personal. Especially when it came to anything once

belonging to the girls or my own childhood.

But not everything was difficult as I took great pleasure in

donating my snow blower to one of our neighbors.

The moving process was a lot of work. Actually packing

and moving was the easy part. Changing bank accounts, phone

numbers, driver’s licenses, voter registrations, utilities and

countless change of address requests was the real work.

But now that we are settled in (for the most part), I’m real-

izing that if I didn’t let go and trust others, it would be diffi-

cult, way too difficult, to move forward. And if I didn’t have

help along the way, the move would have been impossible.

For it’s through letting go, trusting, delegating and empower-

ing others that we truly grow within ourselves and in our lead-

ership worlds.

When we trust and delegate correctly it empowers others

and increases ownership. Makes everyone part of the team.

And involving others often uncovers unseen viewpoints, new

talents, perspectives or approaches and hopefully, new solu-

tions and a better product. Trust and delegating are often diffi-

cult to practice. But if we trust others and become more open

to the new ideas that will be generated, growth and opportuni-

ty will come a lot easier.

The San Angelo Chamber of Commerce would not be the

organization it is today without the active involvement and

participation of our members. And it’s not just your member-

ship dues. It’s your ideas, feedback, volunteer time and labor

that will make San Angelo a better place to do business.

Please know that your suggestions, ideas and involvement

are always welcome and encouraged. Please feel free to send

an email to [email protected] or call my cell anytime at

325-656-5555 if you would like to share a thought or an idea.

From the Economic Development Division

ACTION REPORT NOVEMBER 2016 PAGE 4

The Economic Development Division of the San Angelo

Chamber of Commerce is staffed by Michael Looney, VP, and

Heather Givens-Kumpe, ED Specialist. The department creates

strategies for economic development on behalf of the communi-

ty of San Angelo, and works with all of the regional economic

development partners to achieve these goals. The Chamber’s

economic development division is a key player in development

of new company prospects for our city. Our main objective is to

market San Angelo to a national and international audience,

targeting companies that may have an interest in expansion or

relocation to the Concho Valley. To name a few, these include

machine parts manufacturing operations, heavy transport com-

panies and related wholesale distribution centers, aviation-

related companies, food and pet products manufacturers, green

energy companies (solar, wind and biofuels), contact centers

(financial and insurance services), oil and gas producers and

related service companies.

WAYS WE REACH A NATIONAL MARKET

In any given month, we meet with several prospective com-

panies interested in our region that can work in collaboration

with our existing industry sectors and create new good job

options for our citizens. We outreach to these prospects in a

wide variety of ways. Some of these prospects come through

the Chamber of Commerce by contacting us directly, as we are

many prospects’ first line of connection to our market, however,

we engage many of our recruitment prospects by more direct

means.

NATIONAL TRADE SHOWS AND LOCAL

INDUSTRY EXPOSITIONS

We attend between four and six national industry trade

shows per year, which is a great way to meet dozens of in-

dustry decision-makers in one place. This year alone, the ED

department attended four national trade shows, with the de-

sired result in several companies expressing interest in poten-

tial expansion here. Closer to home we also host San Angelo

industry expositions that focus on specific industry sectors.

This year in San Angelo, the Economic Development Divi-

sion co-hosted the Southwest Energy Summit, the Southwest

Energy Transmission Summit and the Wind and Solar Expo

(which helped us recruit a solar power company to town).

These three Expos brought corporate leadership and industry

experts from as far away as Boston and Seattle. Making these

industry connections is critical to spreading the message that

San Angelo has excellent opportunities for business growth

in a variety of industries. The added benefit is the ability to

showcase San Angelo directly to these industry leaders with

one-on-one time spent and city tours.

BROADCASTING THE MESSAGE ACROSS

THE CONTINENT AND EUROPE

We reach these national and international companies via a

robust print marketing campaign in many industry and site

selection publications, with full and multi-page ads. This year,

we advertised in the Governor’s national/international trade

book, TEXAS – WIDE OPEN FOR BUSINESS, with a four-

page ad. We also did a four-page ad in the FDI Alliance Maga-

zine, a foreign direct investment publication that is sent to hun-

dreds of North American and European site selectors and com-

pany directors. It was also featured as the official publication of

the International Economic Development Council’s 2016 annu-

al conference in Cleveland, OH. We also ran a full-page ad in

Trade & Industry Development Journal, which is a premier site

selection magazine. All of these publications are delivered to

their readers in print and digitally.

While building awareness of our special San Angelo market,

available facilities and workforce opportunities, these articles

also tell the story of our unique culture, including the high level

of sophistication of our stable and diverse economy.

Trade Shows and Publications are only one aspect of our

annual recruitment outreach. Next month, we will highlight the

other ways we reach specifically targeted industries across the

State and Nation through direct relationship building. We have

big plans for 2017 and look forward to sharing with you, our

members, just how we plan to promote growth of our San

Angelo economy.
