Peggy Booth’s Famous Parkin!

Ingredients 10oz Plain Flour

8oz Oatmeal

4oz Sugar

4oz Lard

6oz Golden Syrup

2oz Black Treacle

2 Tsp. Ground Ginger

1 Tsp. Bicarbonate Soda

1/4 Pint Milk (the recipe states 1 gill!)

Method Melt the lard, treacle and syrup in a pan. Add all

other ingredients and mix well.

Bake at 170 degrees for around 1 1/4 hrs.

Enjoy!!

Crime Brow

This photograph from the 1950’s shows Stannylands Road or as

it is known locally Crime Brow looking towards Daisy Nook. It

is quite typical, as the next few months see the road closed to

traffic to replace the fencing. The rails on the left are long

gone, and older readers will remember identical ones at the

bottom of Failsworth Road alongside the curve of Lord’s Brook

where it ran past the sight of the old dye works towards the

wartime pill box—cum fire watching post known as the

‘Blockhouse’.

It is quite noticeable how open the view is without the overhang

of trees there is today. A chance meeting with Brian and

Dennis Wellburn (surely the most aptly named coal merchants

ever!) who said their mother Eva had one of these photos my

father sold as calendars, reminded me of the picture.
