The Failsworth Pie Story

Three years ago, Phil Graham began his mission to make Failsworth the new pie capital of the North West. From his small sandwich shop on Lord Lane, after unsuccessfully trying to sell a number of bigname, mass produced pies to his customers, he decided to take matters into his own hands. Using his 40 years’ experience in food product development, Phil took to the kitchen and eventually emerged with his proud creation - a delicious mixture of mince meat, vegetables and potato, all emblazoned with pastry “F” - the Failsworth Pie! Trade doubled as people came to sample the district’s newest sensation, including the Manchester Evening News, Oldham Advertiser, and the XFM Breakfast show, which all paid a visit to the family business. Soon enough, Phil roped in his family and from his tiny kitchen they baked long into the night to supply the demand for the new product. When asked about the secret to the pie’s success, Phil is convinced the answer lies in the gravy! He said "Customers keep asking what I put in the gravy, but I won’t tell," he said. "It’s a secret. If Coca Cola won’t give up their secret formula then neither will I.” Even though the shop is now closed, Phil still receives endless requests from friends, family and former customers for the tasty treats. So now, with the backing of celebrity chef Tom Bridge and his ‘Pie Society’, Phil has decided to revive the Failsworth Pie. Available in 3 sizes, they are ideal for any occasion, from parties to a freezer essential for teatime emergencies!

Uncle Monkeys Musings!

2012 looks like being a year of anniversaries with the Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics. Starting with Her Majesty, I can clearly remember the only time I saw her, passing through Failsworth! It must have been sometime in the autumn of 1954, my first year in school. We got the afternoon off, it was pouring with rain of course and I stood opposite Failsworth Police Station with my Mum, Auntie and Cousin. Allan and I kept getting told off for trailing our union jacks in the gutter, the royal car went past on its way to Manchester and the Queen waved. Heady stuff in the days before T.V, it must have lasted 2 seconds after an hour of waiting, but everyone was ecstatic. Long ,may it continue. 2012 is also the 50th anniversary of the Cuban missile crisis, when the world stood on the brink of nuclear war. Did it affect Failsworth? Not really. A colleague wrote a pamphlet for GCSE students talking about the “smell of burning in the air”. Well, it might have been in Manchester, but in Woodhouses there were weightier matters. It was still several years before Mr Monks was going to galvanise Failsworth UDC to provide a full sewage system and a septic tank was being constructed between no’s 7 & 9. When I asked my Dad if there was going to be a nuclear war he was reassuringly certain there wouldn't be. Uncle Tom said if there was, we

could use the new septic tank as a fall-out shelter, but he hoped the

Russians would hurry up because he didn't fancy going down there when it was in use! Those with long Olympic memories may recall that Failsworth had a silver medallist back in 1960 in Rome, when Dorothy Shirley was successful. Makes you think of the difference between then and now; if it was today she would have been on national T.V for weeks, back then she probably just got her picture in the Oldham Chron. But at least somebody still remembers her. Andrew Clough

Mothers Day Blueberry Pancakes

Treat your mum to a well deserved breakfast in bed!

Ingredients 200g Self Raising Flour, 1 Egg, 300ml Milk, knob of Butter, 150g

Blueberries, Sunflower Oil, Golden Syrup.

Method

Mix together the flour, baking powder and a pinch of salt in a large bowl. Beat the egg with the milk, make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients

and whisk in the milk to make a thick smooth batter. Beat in the melted butter, and gently stir in half the blueberries.

Heat a teaspoon of oil or small knob of butter in a large non-stick frying pan. Drop a large tablespoonful of the batter per pancake into the pan to

make pancakes about 7.5cm across. Make three or four pancakes at a time. Cook for about 3 minutes over a medium heat until small bubbles appear on the surface of each pancake, then turn and cook another 2-3 minutes

until golden. Cover with kitchen paper to keep warm while you use up the rest of the batter. Serve with golden syrup and the rest of the blueberries.
