PG 5 ǀ St. Barbara Catholic Church

Today’s gospel, the last in Ordinary Time, presents us with a great challenge. It calls us not to be superstitious but to be actively Christian. Sometimes, we expect the world to get better by just praying about it or by staying out of trouble but, for things to change, it takes more than that. It takes that we listen to Christ the King enthroned in our hearts and become His true servants—servants that act on His commands decisively.

What is at stake? A better world and Heaven! Jesus is saying in the gospel that, if we wish to live in peace in the world and if we want life with Him, we must love others actively, irrespective of the response we get to our love. This is the way God loves us. It is not enough just to fulfil our religious obligations. It won’t do to say, “I am a good enough Catholic”. We are expected to keep going out of our way and reach out in love especially to those in need – the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the poor and naked, the sick and those in prison.

At times, we get into the mindset that it’s ok not to do as much for those we think have brought misery upon themselves by their own actions but that, according to Jesus, is still not an excuse. It does not matter how people became poor or got sick—whether it was their fault or not—or why they are in prison. We are called to love them the same. These people are especially to be loved because they are the most in need of having their lives turned around. Love has the power to do that.

That is how we are to serve Christ the King; he wants us to be filled with care and compassion for brothers and sisters everywhere and, especially for those who are furthest from him, without counting the cost.

Serving Him, needless to say, is a challenge. But, it is a challenge that brings new life to us and to the world. As we end one liturgical year to begin a new season of Advent, let us love more. Let us close with this little prayer: “Help me, Lord, to seek and find and respond to you in every person and in every experience of this day. Grant, Lord, that all my thoughts, intentions, actions and responses may be directed solely to your love and service this day and ever more. Amen.”

From the Desk of Fr.

Christmas Wafer Oplatek

Sharing of the oplatek (pronounced opwatek) is the most ancient and beloved of all Polish Christmas traditions. Oplatek is a thin wafer made of flour and water, similar in taste to the hosts that are used for communion during Mass. The Christmas wafer is shared before the Christmas Eve supper. The head of the household usually starts by breaking the wa-fer with his wife and then continues to share it with everyone at the table. Wishes for peace and prosperity are exchanged and even the pets and farm animals are given a piece of oplatek on Christmas Eve. Legend has it that if animals eat oplatek on Christmas Eve, they will be able to speak in human voices at midnight, but only those who are pure of spirit will be able to hear them. This tradition dates back many centuries when a thin, flat bread called podplomyk was baked over an open flame and then shared with the family gathered around the fire on Christmas Eve. Patterns would be cut onto the bread to make breaking easier. This is why oplatek today still have patterns on them, usually of Nativity scenes. The Christmas Wafer will be available in the Resource/Gift Center at the vestibule of the Church after all the weekend Masses. The cost is $2.00 for an envelope containing three wafers.
