With all the rain in October many farmers have had to bring the cattle in for winter early.

Anita Head for South East Farmer

I guess it was inevitable that after such a long dry spell of weather the heavens would open and we would be in for a soaking, it was unfortunate that it decided to break the day before the local ploughing match.

The day went ahead as planned but it was spent dodging some fairly hefty showers and cowering in the nearest trade stand tent when they did arrive. For those that braved the ele-ments I think it was a good day overall, and gave everyone the opportunity to catch up with people we don’t see that often, but I suspect there were a good number who awoke to some fairly angry looking skies and decided not to turn up. Such a shame when so much work has gone into planning the event. Those that do go should be commended, and I for one are extremely grateful that people are willing to do what they do for events like this to go ahead, they deserve our thanks.

An event that did go ahead, that I would have preferred not to have taken place, was the arrival of the merry band called ex-tinction rebellion who decided to block the main highway into Dover port one Saturday. I understand we live in a free country and everyone has a right to voice their opinion whether you or I agree with their view point or not, but when it starts to cause so much inconvenience to people trying to go about their daily life or even earn a living I for one start to switch off. Organisations such as this rely on building and maintain public support to maintain and continue the message they are selling and I don’t really see how the actions in Dover or more latterly in London really work in the long run. That said it does get in the head-lines and the offshoot of that is our industry comes in for more bashing as a result, and it was while I was in the car listening to another session about eating less red meat that I started thinking.

If as a society we go down this road of considerable reduction in red meat consumption the obvious outcome is a reduction in the bovine population.

A prime bullock kills out around 50% and a cull dairy cow 40/45% I believe I am prepared to be corrected but it’s around these levels, so what happens to the remaining 50 to 55/60? You don’t have to look far to find out that for as long as animals have been used as a food source by humans their by-products have been just as important. Indeed, parts of the cow other than the beef are used in the manufacturing process of many industrial, household and health products that we use daily. So I wondered how many of the eco warriors that travelled down

to Dover, cause let’s face it Dover is on the edge, use any of the following in their daily lives, cellophane, candles, ceramics, cosmetics, crayons, paper, shaving cream, perfumes, paints, linoleum, detergents, toothpaste, soaps and deodorants all containing fats and fatty acids/protein meals. Bandages, wall-paper, glues, from collagen based adhesives, clothing, lug-gage, shoes, gloves and belts from the hide, a whole range of pharmaceutical products, Insulin for diabetics, soft cartilage used in plastic surgery, thrombin used as a blood clotting agent, blood factors for treating haemophilia and anti-rejection drugs and assuming that they used some form of transport unless they are so green they walked… tyres contain stearic acid which makes rubber hold its shape under continuous sur-face friction, antifreeze contains glycerol, asphalt has a binding agent from fat, glue from beef protein used in car bodies, nu-merous lubricants contain fatty acids from inedible beef pro-tein, such as brake fluid, airplane lubricants, runway foam, car polish and waxes and textiles for car/train upholstery. The list is endless.

I don’t know but I guess many of those involved that Saturday have little or no idea of the ingredients in the products they use, there may be perfectly reasonable replacements for the products/ingredients listed above but there may not, or maybe we just import it all – beware of unintended consequences.

With all the rain in October many farmers have had to bring the cattle in for winter early. This time last year cows were still grazing merrily until late November/December. Straw is slowly starting to move so demand may increase if this weather con-tinues. The maize is now all in the clamps ready for winter and yields appear to be variable. A few breakdowns with the forage harvester meant a delay but all is now finished and hopefully the forager is back on track.

Lewis Hamilton appears to be making a few ructions on social media this week, since opening his new “Neat burger restau-rant” in London, he allegedly uses only plant-based products. A quote from him claimed “Agriculture farming is the largest pol-lutant we currently have by over 50%, far more than our travel industry combined. I’m sad to see so many people inc close friends, ignore what is happening daily. We were taught that eating animal products was good for us, but we’ve been lied to for hundreds of years. I want my life to mean something and honestly up until now my life has no meaning”.

Sourcing farm inputs competitively is a big part of what we do for our membership. It saves you time phoning around and ensures that you are not paying over the odds for loyalty! Please don’t think that because you may not farm on a big scale that you cannot benefit from purchasing through us here at RAMSAK – we recently saved one member around £500 on a load of tractor diesel, and are consistently able to save money for domestic heating oil users regard-less of the quantity required. Because our bulk fuel prices are staggered according to quantity, don’t forget that you can save money by ordering for multiple properties on your RAMSAK account!

For those considering autumn and spring deliveries of fertiliser, we can again quote competitively, especially for Lithan 34.5% N and TSP – so give us a call and we will see what we can do! For some products and quantities we can offer deferred payment options.

Fencing and building produces remain a large sector for RAMSAK, so don’t forget to make the most of the discounts available to you as a member when making your purchases with a variety of suppliers.

For those of you confined to the workshops because of the appalling weather, Lucy has secured a very competitive deal for all your workshop supplies including cleaning agents, oils, greases etc for maintenance jobs as well as anti-freeze, de-icers etc.

We have also welcomed new member AgriMach (you will see some editorial from them in this Edition on Page 19) who can offer fuel cleaning and filtration, especially relevant given the vast amount of information in circulation at present concerning the biodiesel content in gasoil. For machines that are likely to stand for a period of time over the winter there is a risk that condensation will form in the fuel tank – this will combine to form a “bloom” of bacterial growth in the fuel tank. We can provide a preventative additive to the fuel to stop this happening, or a shock treatment if it’s hap-pened already. Coupled with this we can source a filtration system that will polish the fuel to make it useable – espe-cially relevant as the biodiesel levels will increase again early next year and anyone who has experienced the need to change fuel filters twice as often as normal will testify, this is only going become a more common problem.

Finally don’t forget to let the office know about any hay and straw you have for sale – as much detail as possible please and we will add it to our extensive database. The forage trade may be exceptionally quiet at the moment but pre-warned is fore-armed – we cannot place what we don’t know about!

For all Hamilton’s sincerity, he has certainly invited charges of

hypocrisy given the size of his own carbon footprint! For many

years he has travelled to F1 races in a private jet or using first

class air travel around the world. He also serves as an

ambassador at Mercedes for chief sponsor Petronas, one of the

world’s largest oil and gas plants! He has also been driving

around since he was nine using an extortionate amount of CO2!

Fergus is “enjoying” university life! A couple of visits home for

mother to assist with washing etc! Probably if the truth be known

his visit was to finish his beloved tractor. Fergus was given a

1955 “Old Grey Fergie” by his great grandfather and he has

lovingly restored it from scratch… The project is now nearing

completion and the final job of replacing the clutch and a

respray remain. A fantastic learning curve for him with a little

guidance from a friendly mechanic and YouTube.” Monty has

moved his ewes to fresh grass in preparation for tupping and

has sent 4 of his lambs to the local abattoir. Local lamb will be

for sale (freezer ready). The Billy appears to be working well in

with the goats…

After a rather large amount of miles….Zara has a new pony.

After approximately 1500 miles we managed to find a super

pony in Frittenden. Great excitement in our household. (As I

write this the long awaited “Kent test” results are imminent). My

congratulations to all who passed and for those who didn’t

please remember… that it’s not classed as failure just a learning

curve that goes on to open new doors, exciting challenges and

the future is in your hands. The swear ban continues in our

household, young Woody appears to be learning a whole new

vocabulary!

AgriSouth is a new annual one day free to attend event to be held on 14th May 2020 at Faversham Showground, hosted by Elverton Farms Ltd.

The inaugural 2020 event, will focus on research, technical development and innovation by showcasing practical demonstrations of some of the very latest machinery and equipment as well as a myriad of professional services and supplies available for farming businesses.

NIAB TAG will unveil a range of field based arable demonstrations and trials that enable visitors to interact with leading industry experts, including variety demonstration trials in winter wheat and winter oilseed rape. Additional agronomy and soil management demonstrations will be confirmed in early 2020.

NIAB TAG’s involvement as a technical partner with AgriSouth has been led by Keith Truett, NIAB's regional agronomist for the South East. He joined the organisation four years ago, with 20 years’ experience of farm agronomy and as a member of ARC, TAG and then chairman of the NIAB TAG's Kent Technical Committee.

"NIAB always hosted open days, but rarely exhibits at trade shows. AgriSouth will be a great opportunity to showcase our independent, science-based approach to technical information, plus highlight aspects of our farmer member driven research." said Mr Truett.

For all enquiries on exhibiting and sup-porting AgriSouth and Viti-Culture please contact The Show Management Team on 01622 815356 at The RAMSAK Group Office. or email Karen Wheeler - [email protected].

Viti-Culture is a one day free to attend event that focus’ on technical developers, innovators, supplies and services directly or indirectly involved in Wine Production - from Soil to Cellar

Viti-Culture’s first show – Following many months’ preparation and building anticipation from viticulturalists and winemakers across the UK, the inaugural Viti-Culture show proved to be a momentous success.

It took place on Thursday 11 July 2019 at Plumpton College, Sussex, the first UK event of its kind, conceived and organised by Grape Vine Events with support from media partner Vineyard magazine, saw over 1,200 visitors through the gates. The free-to-attend one-day show was designed to focus on supplies and services available to growers and winemakers by showcasing the very latest machinery and equipment as well as the myriad of professional services and supplies needed from soil to cellar.

Set against an incredibly picturesque backdrop of the South Downs, it certainly didn’t disappoint. 80 trade exhibitors were on hand to provide vineyard owners, managers, winemakers and those looking to plant their first vines, with specialist advice.

“To our knowledge, there is no other event in the UK like it and on behalf of all those involved with creating, hosting and producing this exciting new event, I would like to thank the event sponsors, HSBC and Kreston Reeves, exhibitors and the visitors from across the UK and Europe who attended,” said Karen Wheeler. “Their confidence in backing the very first UK event of its kind matched our own confidence that Viti-Culture is destined to succeed as a must-see annual event for the viticulture industry.”

As with all our events we aim to improve and expand year on year, the 2020 event is now booked at Plumpton College for 9th July 2020. Make sure you follow us on social media for up to date news, as it is announced.

For those of you who use Kerosene to heat your homes, you would be forgiven for not thinking about heating oil at the moment with many of us still experiencing mild (albeit wet) days. However, now is a good time to check the levels of your tanks and place an order whilst demand is low. Ordering ahead ensures that no household is caught out, especially in remote and rural areas, where access can be tricky if the weather suddenly deteriorates and we are “blessed” with snow. Delivery in snowy conditions can be tricky as fuel tankers are by their nature unstable and we have spent many an occasion organising a RAMSAK Member to go to their rescue!

Heating oil prices are roughly 2-5.5% down compared to this time last year, so by ordering now there is an added bonus of a small cost saving .

If you have multiple properties, or get together with your neighbours to form a syndicate you can use your RAMSAK Membership and Account to order on their behalf. The more you order, the greater the cost-saving!

Demand for domestic heating oil deliveries will begin to rise, so don’t leave your tank to run out before ordering!

Don’t forget that we get our fuel prices from six different suppliers daily, and with our buying power now exceeding 7 million litres of bulk fuel per year we can quote favourable prices and lead times for delivery!

Whilst examining your heating oil levels it makes sense to check your boilers/Aga’s. RAMSAK can organise a boiler service using qualified OFTEC registered engineers to check everything is working correctly and identify any potential problems going forward. It’s obviously much better to learn of any issues when it’s still mild, rather that after the first snow-fall of the season!

Remember to check your anti-freeze levels in all your vehicles/tractors as well your stocks of de-icer. Call Lucy here in the office - she can source that for you in a variety of quantities at favourable prices.

Background: The British Standard for non-road diesel (known as BS2869) was revised in 2006 to allow the addition of FAME to both

classes of middle distillate fuel, however, this was rarely realised. Then the EU Fuel Quality Directive was implemented in the UK on the

14th January 2011 introducing changes to the composition of SFGO. Fuels intended for use in non-road mobile machinery will have a

sulphur content of 10ppm.

Now tough new biofuel targets have come into force from 15th April 2018. Changes to the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO)

will compel suppliers of fuel to make sure the mix is at least 12.4% biofuel by 2032. The scheme plans to increase the biofuels volume

target gradually:

15th April 2018 increases to 7.25%

1st January 2019 increases to 8.50%

1st January 2020 increases to 9.75%

Biodiesel is a diesel replacement fuel, which in the UK is manufactured from mostly recycled cooking oils but may also be made of

a variety of belneds of renewable and recyclable material including tallow and plant oils. The biodiesel manufacturing process con-

verts these oils and fats into ling chain molecules. These molecules are also referred to as Fatty Acid Methyl Esters and are more

commonly known as FAME. FAME has been blended into the UK road fuel since 2004 in levels up to 7%.

FAME is a powerful solvent, with good detergency properties – it is effectively a paint stripper! Unlike diesel FAME is “hydroscopic”

which means it attracts and holds onto water.

Potential Problems.

Material incompatibility (many common rubbers, plastics and surface coatings will degrade from contact with fuels containing FAME.

Residual deposits causing clogeed filters

Water uptake – with enhanced potential for mould, bacteria and algae growth.

Fuel stability (may degrade oiver time by oxidation and hydrolysis)

Cold flow waxing and precipitation problems.

Advice.

If you find sediment or bacterial growth seek professional help. There are fuel cleaners and filter systems available through your

RAMSAK Membership. Home remedies such as fungicides or microbiological killers may do more harm than good in the long run!

Those that do work will kill the bacteria but the dead growth on the bottom of the tank can also build up and block filters.

Keep the fuel clean and top up the tank to reduce air which can draw moisture. Subsequently check the tanks often and have a regular

maintenance programme in place.

NEWS FROM ABBEY COURT SCHOOL - MEMBER FEATURE Abbey Court Rural Activities Centre

. . . a local community sponsorship opportunity

In April 2017, the primary phase of Abbey Court—an Outstanding* school for children with profound learning difficulties, life threatening and life limiting conditions—moved in to a fabulous new building on Cliffe Road, Strood.

Along with the building, the school was fortunate enough to attain the freehold on the land adjoining the school; formerly Temple School playing fields.

As things stand, the field is not accessible to the children and they have been developing ideas so that the land can be put to the best educational use for the pupils.

A public consultation to develop a rural activities centre on the land won the support of the local com-munity and Abbey Court are delighted to have been granted planning permission by Medway Council, to proceed with the project.

They have been working closely with a team of consultants and local architects and the building de-sign has now gone out to tender. They are hoping to be operational imminently.

The rural activities centre will consist of an outdoor classroom, stable block and livestock barns, a pond and 3 paddocks as well as areas for chickens, rabbits and pigs. They will also have a horticultur-al area with poly-tunnel and raised beds. The centre will be used by the children to develop their life skills and give them regular experiences of being around a range of animals. The school is bursting with ideas for the future of our school farm and are excited about the opportunities that it will provide for the pupils and other local schools.

We offer a wide range of Exhaust Spark Arrestors for a vast range of engine sizes and most are available on a next day delivery service. Our Supertrapp Spark Arrestors also boast approval from the Ministry of Defence and come complete with a Certificate of Con-formity. In addition to this we are also pleased to offer a full range of Chalwyn Valves. We have a range of exhaust gas purification products which covers Diesel Oxidation Cata-lysts, Three Way Catalysts, Diesel Particulate Filters and Selective Catalytic Reduction Systems for stationary engines. We have the ability to design bespoke emission reduction systems to fit in the smallest of spaces and work within the harshest of environments. We also offer an entire range of Exhaust Rain Caps which are available from stock, with the very large sizes being made to order. We have our range of fuel filtration equipment which we manufacture under the Agriepure brand. These diesel polishing systems are second to none and achieve exactly what the user demands. Our range has been sold worldwide and developed for use with ATEX re-quirements in mind. Systems are offered in a range of electric or pneumatic driven pumps with a whole host of different filter housings on offer. We also represent Samoa fluid handling and Racor Filters as part of our ever increasing range, covering market areas from Marine to Industrial Stationary Engines for Diesel and Petrol Filtration. Our automotive section holds an array of products such as Bilt Hamber Rust Removers and Converters, Exhaust System Repair Kits, Radiator Relief Additives and specialist tools. Yet again, most of our range is stocked and will be with you the following day.
